WELCOME Ten good reasons to attend the ECSS Amsterdam Congress:

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of MOVE Research Institute Amsterdam and the EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research, from both VU University Amsterdam and VU University Medical Center Amsterdam, we are very pleased to invite you to attend the 19th Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science in Amsterdam. The congress will be held between 2nd and 5th of July 2014 on the campus of VU University Amster-dam, only 8 minutes away by train from Schiphol Airport and near the old city centre of Amsterdam. By attending this congress you have an excellent possibility to discover or contribute to ‘Sport Science around the Canals’.

Both at VU University Amsterdam and VU University Medical Center Amsterdam sports and human movement are studied in depth. The research of MOVE Research Institute Amsterdam aims to understand and improve sport performance by studying biomechanical, exercise and muscle physiological, and perceptual and cognitive processes and factors. Research at EMGO Institute for Health and Care

Research is devoted to the health aspectsof sports and physical (in-) activity. The

vast output in high-impact, refereed international journals devoted to both theoretical and applied aspects of sports and human movement research.

During the ECSS congress, information exchange in both oral and mini-oral presentation formats will be particularly emphasized and facilitated. The Young Investigator Award will again be one of the highlights of the congress. We are convinced that there will be a lot of exciting issues for everyone addressed in the programme.

We look forward to meeting you all in Amsterdam 2014!

CONGRESS VENUE

The congress will be held at the campus of the VU University Amsterdam. At VU University Amsterdam, education and research are closely intertwined. High-quality teaching and cutting-edge research have given the university a great deal of recognition, enabling it to attract prominent scientists from both The Netherlands and abroad.

VU stands for ‘Vrije Universiteit’ which means ‘Free University’. Here, ‘free’ refers to freedom from state and church interference. The university now comprises twelve faculties and has teaching facilities for 26,000 students. With more than 50 Bachelor’s programmes and almost a 100 Master’s programmes, VU University

VU University Amsterdam is located in the South Western part of Amsterdam near Railway Station ‘Amsterdam Zuid’. There are good railway, tram and bus connections between the university, the hotels and the airport.

and commercial centre and has always been characterised by open-mindedness

Although Amsterdam is one of Europe’s leading capitals, it still has the charm of a village. No other European city can rival Amsterdam’s 7,000 historic buildings, some of which date back to the 14th century. The well-known symmetrical rings of canals with over 1,000 bridges summon up visions of Holland’s Golden Age. Amsterdam has a dazzling array of cultural attractions with something for everyone. Virtually all points of interest are well within walking distance.

There are 42 museums, including the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk (Municipal) Museum, the Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum), and the Anne Frank House. The city is also the home of the internationally acclaimed Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Dutch National Ballet and the Dutch Opera. Moreover, the Dutch are multilingual, which makes getting around so much easier. Amsterdam will welcome you warmly and you will feel at home in one of the most interesting cities of Europe.

Excellent accessibility from all over the world

Amsterdam can be reached quickly, directly and comfortably from all over the world. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is a very modern airport, which has direct scheduled connections to 237 cities in more than 100 countries by 85 airlines. Train and motorway connections to Amsterdam from all major European destinations are excellent. Train and taxi connections from Schiphol Airport to the congress venue take only 10-15 minutes. The city centre can be reached in just 20-25 minutes.

The city is therefore ideal for getting around by foot, bicycle or public transport. Amsterdam has a very dense public transport system and tram, metro or bus stops are usually around the corner.Cars are less suited for getting around in Amsterdam because the city can be considered car-unfriendly. Parking has to be paid for in almost the entire city and the rates can be substantial. Guarded parking at the ‘Transferium’ is however

minutes away.

Amsterdam offers a wide choice of study options.

The Dutch capital has been - through the centuries - a renowned cultural, scientific

and flexibility. The city cherishes a long tradition of unrestricted exchange of ideas.

affordable and includes a public transport ticket to the heart of the city, about 20

Young InvestIgators award

One of the key objectives of the ECSS is the promotion of junior scientists and the fostering of state-of-the-art research. For this purpose the ECSS established the Young Investigators Award (YIA), sponsored with generous cash prizes.

In Amsterdam young scientists have again the opportunity of entering this prestigious competition for scientific excellence, where outstanding scientific work can be presented at the annual congress. A jury consisting of the ECSS Scientific Board and ECSS Scientific Committee grants the awards based upon an oral and a mini-oral presentation for the top ten presentations respectively.
