Client: BP Exploration and Production Application: Installation of a new FPSO (Quad 204)Project scope: Independent validation of design, procurement, construction and commissioning phases

Lloyds Register and BP have a long history of successful collaboration. In this project, BPs intention is to fully exploit the remaining Schiehallion/Loyal reserves; the concept for redevelopment of the Quad 204 area involves the installation of a new geostationary turret-moored, harsh-water FPSO at the same location as theexistingFPSO.Theexploitationofthereservoirs is being extended through the provision of up to 28 additional subsea production and injection wells across Schiehallion/Loyal fields.

TheQuad204FPSOwillbemooredinapproximately 400m of water, some 150km west of Shetland, and will use the existing subsea infrastructure (SURF). Conditions in this area are amongst the harshest experienced in the UK oil and gas sector, therefore the facilities provided for this project must be capable of operating in weather extremes that cause significant ship motion, and where equipment will be exposed to a corrosive (wet and saliferous) environment.

Thetopsidesfacilitieswillconsistofthree-stage gas-oil separation, associated gas compression and dehydration prior to gas export via the existing West of Shetlands pipeline, or distribution as lift gas. Produced water, supplemented by treated seawater, will be re-injected to provide the maintenance of reservoir pressure.

Lloyds Register, as the appointed IVB to BP, performed verification to meet the requirements of the Offshore Installations (Safety Case) Regulations 2005, and the key requirements of Reference 1. We were involved in the Design, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning phases of the scheme and provided individual Verification Work Instructions (VWIs) detailing the necessary actions to be taken by individual examiners when assessing the suitability of each item of SCE equipment or system.

Client: Woodside Energy Ltd, Perth, Western AustraliaApplication: Steel jacket and deck Project scope: Independent validation of design, construction and installation

Lloyds Register Asia has a strong and ongoing relationship with Woodside. Our validation services to the North Rankin Redevelopment (NR2) are performed under the frame agreement with Woodside for the provision of validation and classification services. Besides North Rankin 2 we are providing validation operations verification and/or classification to the majority of Woodsides new offshore projects and existing assets, including the North Rankin A, Goodwyn A, Angel and Pluto fixed facilities and the Maersk Ngujima-Yin, Northern Endeavour and Nganhurra FPSO units. We are supporting the refurbishment of North Rankin A, one of the worlds largest capacity gas-production platforms, in readiness for the installation of the North Rankin B alongside.

  • North Rankin B platform presents its own unique challenges. Installing the deck by float-over method will make this project one of the largest of its kind in the world. A core requirement is to connect the new platform by two 100-metre bridges to the existing North Rankin A offshore facility. Our team of structural and foundations experts will help contribute to the projects success, backed up by our extensive knowledge of the existing North Rankin A facility and local regulatory environment.

ThePerth,WesternAustraliaofficeisperforming the project management of the validation services. Detailed design review of the jacket and deck is being performed by the Kuala Lumpur office supported by specialists based in our AberdeenandLondonoffices.ThejacketisunderconstructionatPTMcDermottIndonesias fabrication facilities in Batam, Indonesia, and the deck at Hyundai Heavy Industries yard, Ulsan, South Korea. Our surveyors are attending both sites, as well as a number of equipment vendors worldwide. Our independent validation services will not only help to assure the client that the business is complying with regulations, but that project contractors are meeting the desired performance standards.

North Rankin B is scheduled for completion in 2013. With North Rankin A, it will operate as a single integrated facility.
