In centuries gone by, "liberty" was just a concept -an idea feared by tyrants and dreamed of by the

opposed. In more recent history, "liberty" became acause and a deeply held belief worth fighting and dyingfor. Today, Liberty University has become a place wherestudents call home … where people dare to dream bigdreams and then work to see those dreams come topass … where old-fashioned values and morality stillsurvive and thrive in a world which appears to haveforgotten the meaning of the word … where theundeniable Truth of the Ages still reigns supreme …where the whole person is educated - body, mind andsoul … a place where you can learn, grow and achievewholeness as you become all God created you to be.

The MissionTo produce Christ-centered men and women with the

values, knowledge and skills required to impacttomorrow's world … the mission is carried out forresident students, through both undergraduate andgraduate programs, through a rigorous academicprogram and structured social environment … also, it iscarried out externally for students who can't make thetrek to the campus in a comparable academic programbut without the structure of the resident community, through a distance learning program.

Dr. Jerry FalwellLiberty University Founder

and Former Chancellor

(1933-2007)

At the age of 22, havingjust graduated from college inJune 1956, Jerry Falwell re-turned to his hometown ofLynchburg, Va., and star tedThomas Road Baptist Churchwith 35 members. The offer-

ing that first Sunday totaledonly $135.

Falwell often said about thefirst collection, “We thought we had conquered theworld”. Today, Thomas Road Baptist Church has 24,000members and the total annual revenues of all the JerryFalwell ministries total over $200 million.

Within weeks of founding his new church in 1956,Falwell began the Old-Time Gospel Hour, a daily localradio ministry and a weekly local television ministry.Nearly five decades later, this Old-Time Gospel Hour isnow seen and heard in every American home and onevery continent except Antarctica. Through the years, over three million persons have communicated to theFalwell ministries they received Christ as Lord and Sav-ior as a result of this radio and television ministry.

In 1967, Falwell implemented his vision to build aChristian educational system for evangelical youth. Hebegan with the creation of Lynchburg Christian Acad-emy, a Christ-centered, academically-excellent, fully-ac-

credited Christian day school, providing kindergarten, elementary and high school.

In 1971, Liberty University was founded. Today, over 41,000 students from 50 states and 80 nations at-tend this accredited, liberal ar ts Christian university. Fal-well’s dream has become a reality. A pre-school childcan now enter the school system at age three, and 20 ormore years later, leave the same campus with a Ph.D.,without ever sitting in a classroom where the teacherwas not a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Falwell was also publisher of the National LibertyJournal, a monthly newspaper which is read by over200,000 pastors and Christian workers, and the FalwellConfidential, a weekly e-mail newsletter to over 500,000pastors and Christian activists.

In June 1979, Falwell organized the Moral Majority,a conservative political lobbying movement which thepress soon dubbed the "Religious Right." During the firsttwo years of its existence, the Moral Majority attractedover 100,000 pastors, priests and rabbis and nearlyseven million religious conservatives who mobilized asa pro-life, pro-family, pro-Israel, and pro-strong nationaldefense lobbying organization.

The Moral Majority chose California GovernorRonald Reagan as "their candidate" for President in1980, registered millions of new voters, and set aboutto inform and activate a sleeping giant - 80 millionAmericans committed to faith, family and Judeo-Christ-ian values.

With the impetus of the newly organized MoralMajority, millions of people of faith voted for the firsttime in 1980 and helped elect Ronald Reagan and many

conservative congressmen and senators. Since 1979,about 30% of the American electorate has been identi-fied by media polls as the "Religious Right". Most recentmajor media surveys have acknowledged these "faithand values" voters re-elected George W. Bush in No-vember 2004.

Though perhaps better known outside Lynchburgfor political activism, Jerry Falwell's personal scheduleconfirmed his passion for being a pastor and a Christianeducator. He often stated his heartbeat was for trainingyoung people for every walk of life.

Falwell, who went home to be with the Lord at theage of 73 on May 15, 2007, was married to Macel for49 years and they have three grown children and eightgrandchildren.

Jeff BarberDirector of Athletics

Jeff Barber was named theDirector of Athletics at LibertyUniversity on Jan. 23, 2006,becoming the 10th Director ofAthletics in the history of theUniversity.

The University has chargedBarber with the future leadership ofthe athletics department and thebuilding of a strong financial basisfor the department which will guide

Liberty University athletics into theranks of the elite NCAA Division I

athletic programs in the nation.Barber has wasted little time making an

impact at Liberty, as in less than three years, he has beeninstrumental in guiding Liberty on a path to the next level ofcollegiate athletics.

He has spearheaded athletics facility improvement projectsin nearly every athletics venue, highlighted by changes to WilliamsStadium. During the summer of 2006, the football program’s on-campus playing facility received the latest in playing surfaces asFieldTurf was installed, while numerous other smaller projectswere initiated to aesthetically improve the appearance of thefacility.

However, Barber’s chief facility accomplishment sincejoining the Flames in 2006 was overseeing the completion of theWilliams Football Operations Center. In addition to Barber’s athletic facility achievements, thenew Director of Athletics has spurred a dramatic recording-settingincrease in Flames Club memberships and season ticket sales forfootball and basketball.

In 2007-08 the athletics booster club set new records, pulling in $351,000 in annual membership contributions. The

same year saw Liberty Athletics surpass the $1 million mark ingiving, as the Flames Club brought in $1.3 million in total capitalgifts.

Besides the Sasser Cup championship, Barber also sawLiberty bring home the Big South’s Men’s All-Sport and Women’sAll-Sport trophies, along with its second individual nationalchampionship when Josh McDougal crossed the finish line first atthe 2007 NCAA Cross Country national championship.

Liberty is only the second athletics department in Big Southhistory to win the Sasser Cup, Men’s All-Sport and Women’s All-Sport trophies in the same year.

The Flames’ success has garnered national attention onseveral levels, earning Barber a three-year appointment to theNCAA’s Recruiting Cabinet, beginning with the 2008-09 academicyear.

Barber brought a wealth of experience in the areas ofathletic fundraising and administration to Liberty University, including 25 years in the athletic industry.

He was also responsible for all majorgifts to the Gamecock Club which exceeded $15,000 annually anddeveloped that level of giving from 21 members to 137 at his timeof departure.

Barber joined the athletics department at South Carolina in1996 as an Assistant Athletic Director for Development and waspromoted to Associate Athletic Director/Gamecock Club ExecutiveDirector in 1999.

Prior to his days at South Carolina, Barber served five yearsat Furman in Greenville, S.C., starting as Executive Director of thePaladin Club in 1991, before being promoted to Senior AssociateAthletic Director for External Affairs in 1994.

While serving four years with the Pirates, Barberparticipated in the receipt of annual giving of $4 million to thePirate Club, while organizing and managing Pirate Club actionsand Pirate Pro-Am fundraisers.

The Big South Conference is celebrating its25th Anniversary in 2008-09, a milestonecoming on the heels of unprecedentedachievements and unparalleled success inLeague history over the past few years.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big SouthConference has matured into a competitiveleader in college athletics, actively pursuingexcellence on the field of play and in theclassroom. The league’s growing presence asan NCAA Division I athletic conference isevident by athletic accomplishments on thenational stage, innovative marketing and mediapartnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition whileintentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development ofeach student-athlete.

The Big South Conference was formed onAug. 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (thenBaptist College) Athletic Director HowardBagwell and Augusta President GeorgeChristenberry began recruiting members intothe Big South, receiving initial commitmentsfrom Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell,Coastal Carolina and Winthrop.

One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singletonwas selected as the league’s first commissionerand continued to solicit new members. Hisefforts led to the additions of Armstrong State,Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the BigSouth more than the required six members toconstitute an official conference. The BigSouth’s first year of competition was in the Fallof 1984, and in September 1986, the Big SouthConference was granted full-fledged NCAADivision I status.

During its infancy and prior to securingautomatic bids to NCAA Championships, theBig South made early strides in earning at-largeberths in several national postseason events,

including volleyball, women’s basketball andwomen’s golf. The league received its firstautomatic bid in 1990 to the NCAA BaseballChampionship.

In 1989, George F. "Buddy" Sasser replacedthe retiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner.Under Sasser’s leadership, the conferenceimplemented its public relations andcompliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among someof the finest teams in the nation.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big SouthConference has experienced monumentalgrowth and success in nearly every sport.During this time, the conference has had twoindividual NCAA national champions, close to200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16”in men’s soccer, women’s basketball andbaseball, has received national Top 25 rankingsin men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’sbasketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track &field, and men’s golf, had an individual selectedto play in the NCAA Tennis SinglesChampionship three times, had the No. 1ranked men’s golfer in the country, had thenational team and individual scoring leader inmen’s basketball twice, received an at-largeplayoff berth in the NCAA FootballChampionship Subdivision in 2006, and had aninstitution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s GolfChampionships – the conference’s highest-everteam finish in an NCAA event.

In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the onlyconference nationwide to have an at-largeparticipant in the football playoffs (CoastalCarolina), a team in the second round of theNCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop)and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA BaseballRegionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, CoastalCarolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1

seed three out of the last four years, while itsplayoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-yearof the Big South’s football existence.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replacedSasser as the league’s third Commissioner, andin his 12 years at the helm of the Big South,Kallander has been instrumental in aggressivelypromoting the conference to new levels.

The conference has enjoyed record levels inmarketing revenue during the past severalyears, he has brought television coverage to BigSouth women’s basketball, baseball and softballfor the first time in conference history, as well asincreased national television exposure to theLeague as a whole through aggressive andunique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big Southdeveloped and initiated its first long-rangestrategic plan, re-affirming the league’s vision asa distinctive athletic conference committed tothe quality of institutional life through athleticcompetition. He also spearheaded the efforts toadd football as a championship sport, whichcame to fruition in 2002.

Kallander’s long range vision has alsoincluded technological advancements, as theconference introduced its first live event videostreaming in 2005 and has since expanded itsvideo offerings to more than 500 eventsannually through a partnership with the memberinstitutions, as well as the creation of aconference blog and an online merchandisestore.

The conference’s on-field accomplishmentshave been duplicated in the classroom.Annually, more than 40 percent of conferencestudent-athletes are named to the Big South’sPresidential Honor Roll for maintaining acumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and theleague has had more than 90 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.
