Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit, the pastors and members sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ. Following our worship service, we invite you to meet an Ambassador at the back of the sanctuary. We have a gift for you, and would like to share information regarding our many programs for children, youth and adults. An Ambassador can guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church. We hope you will make Westminster your church home and discover ways to grow in faith.

Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

Worship Aids - Large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices may be obtained from an usher. If you experience a problem with a hearing device, ask an usher for a new one.

Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at www.wpc.org.

The Lord’s Supper is celebrated the first Sunday of every month at both services.

Are you wearing a nametag? It is always a friendly gesture to do so here at Westminster. Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag allows others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are available in baskets at all major entrances. Do not assume everyone knows who you are. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

Pray for those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem very far away and it is easy to forget that Americans, Iraqis, Afghans and coalition forces continue to die. As Christians, we are called to pray for an end to violence, and for the spreading of God’s kingdom of peace and justice. It is also important for us to remember in prayer the families who grieve the loss of their loved ones who have died in these wars. The number of Americans serving in our Armed Forces who have died in these two wars is 4,266(as of April 9.) The number of Iraqis and Afghans who have been killed is many times greater, but no agreed upon number exists. Those Americans who have died most recently are:

Westminster’s Covenant Prayer Group is committed to praying weekly for specific needs of the faith community. Anyone with prayer requests may leave a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or fill out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and place it in the offering plate.

A Centering Prayer time occurs every Thursday at noon in the Ruth Christie Room. Anyone is welcome to participate. Basically, those who come spend thirty minutes in silence. Sometimes we have sacred music playing in the background. Silence allows us time and space to empty our minds, quiet our brains’ chatter, and be still and attentive to God.

If you have come to worship with a heavy heart – worried or confused, anxious or grieving, hurting or fearful about something in your life – a Stephen Minister is available to meet with you following the service and to offer compassionate support. Just go to the piano in the sanctuary at the conclusion of the service, and someone with a Stephen Minister nametag will be there to speak with you.

Easter Egg Hunt Today. Please join us today between services for the annual Easter Egg Hunt! All Westminster children (second grade and under) are invited to participate in this fun-filled tradition. We hunt eggs each year because they remind us of God’s Easter surprise to the women who went to the tomb and found it empty! Join us in Classroom 6 at 10:10 a.m. We’ll make a ‘basket’ and then look for surprises outside.

Expression of Gratitude from former pastor, Jon Walton. “I want to thank everyone at Westminster who has taken the time to write a note or call or express their concern for me during these recent weeks of my recovery from open heart surgery. I am happy to say that the surgery was a success and I am well on my way back to strength. I will be preaching at the morning services on Easter at First Presbyterian in New York, and this will mark my first Sunday back since February 8th. I am especially grateful to Greg and Camilla Jones who came to New York on the day of my surgery, offered prayer, and stood in waiting with my family as I underwent my aortic valve replacement. I continue to be strengthened by the kind wishes and support of so many of you who have been in touch with me. Grace and peace to you all.” Jon Walton

Yoga classes are held in Rodney Chapel each week Thursdays (5:30 – 6:40 p.m.) and Saturdays (10 – 11 a.m.) Yoga benefits the body, mind, and spirit. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a mat, and join us. Suggested donation is $10 to cover costs of instructor and building use, but pay as you are able. Thursday night yoga will resume on April 23.

Join the Phix-It Corps! Twice a month a dedicated group of volunteers meet at the Church to help “Phix” things. This group is a major reason the Church property is so well maintained. We rely on them to attend to all those small items that left alone can become big headaches. The jobs vary from light to heavy and everything in between. The ministry is one of fellowship, fun and accomplishment. Please consider joining this small group on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month at 8:30 am. Close Knit. Be a part of our knitting fellowship at church to knit prayer shawls for members of our congregation and wool helmet liners for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our soldiers need these liners to make the helmets absorbent and more comfortable. Each knitter provides his/her own materials. Off to New Orleans! Westminster's 9th trip to Rebuild Hope in New Orleans (RHINO) departs tomorrow. Please keep these participants in your prayers as they build homes in Ferry Place, New Orleans this week: Jerry and Sue Spilecki, Betty and Jac Crowell, Susan Heinsohn, Kris and Neely Qualls, Bob, Linda and Josh Cox and Mary Beth Davis.

April Is Earth Month at WPC. Earth Day is April 22, and in light of that the Urban Mission focus for April is on the environment, specifically on our most precious resource – water. Only three tenths of one percent of the water on earth is suitable for human use, and that small amount is jeopardized by climate change, waste and pollution. Join us on April 19th (10 pm, classroom 5) when environmentalist and former DNREC head Nick DiPasquale will give us an overview of water issues in Delaware. Then, come to Grace Hall on Friday evening April 24, at 7 pm to see the award winning film “FLOW” – which describes the rapidly growing water crisis on both a human and a global scale and addresses the difficult question: “Can anyone really own water?”

Dining Out For Life. On Thursday, April 30, 2008, AIDS Delaware is having its annual Dining Out for Life event. As we have done the past ten years, we extend a special invitation for you to participate in this event at Buckley’s Tavern, 6:30 p.m. Each participating restaurant will donate 33% of their total food profits from their April 30th receipts to AIDS Delaware! The funds support AIDS Delaware’s case management services, education and outreach programs, counseling and testing initiatives, and its Food Closet. This is a fun and easy way to support AIDS Delaware and also have a nice fellowship dinner. Join the Young Family Fellowship/Parents Of Loved Ones (POLO) group on Sunday, April 26, at 12:15 pm to ride the Wilmington & Western Railroad. Dear Friends of West Church,

West Presbyterian Church will be closing its doors for the last time on Wednesday April, 29, 2009. This is a sad time for us, but it is also a joyful one as we are confident that we have done what God has called us to do and have completed our mission. We have been a committed people and have been good stewards of what we have been given.

Mission Focus on Housing Issues in May

The Urban Mission Committee May emphasis will be on local housing issues. Highlighting this will be three speakers at the Sunday Christian Education hour.

May 3: Mr. Kevin Smith, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity NCC will give us an update on current projects for providing low income housing.

May 10: Mr. Anas Ben Addi, Director of the Delaware State Housing Authority will speak about this vital state program that addresses Delaware’s affordable housing needs.

May 17: Jan Patrick, Realtor, will speak on “Understanding the Challenge of Today’s Housing Market.” Highlights include what it will take to get out of the current situation and also how the “Stimulus Bill” affects us.

Also in May will be a “parade of posters” of local non-profit housing corporations and “build day” with Habitat for Humanity is planned.
