Recognizing a shortage of qualified individuals to fill the growing need for specific job roles, Microsoft Professional Program is a new way to learn the skills and get the hands-on experience these roles require. The Microsoft Professional Program was created to help people gain these technical skills and get real-world experience through a series of online courses that feature hands-on labs and expert instructors. What do I get once I complete the entire track?We will award a digitally-sharable credential to students who successfully pass and obtain Verified Certificates for each course, including the final capstone project.

Is the Microsoft Professional Program offered worldwide?Courses are available anywhere students have access to edX; however, the courses are currently available in English only.

How is the Microsoft Professional Program different from Microsoft Certification Program?The Microsoft Professional Program is complementary to the Microsoft Certification Program. Today's job market has a need for both. Microsoft Certifications tend to be more about validating technical skills for people using specific Microsoft technology. The Microsoft Professional Program is more about helping to close the skills gap by teaching conceptual skills alongside technical ones on a variety of technologies.

Can I take the courses in any order?These courses are presented in a suggested order, to guide you as you build your skills, but this order is only a suggestion. If you prefer, you may take them in a different order. You may also take them simultaneously or one at a time, so long as they are completed within their specified session dates. Where multiple course options are listed, you are required to complete only one of the options.

How much time is required to complete the full track?Courses are developed with the intention that a part-time student (spending 6-8 hours/week) should be able to complete each course in 5-6 weeks. This is just an estimate - time commitment will vary by student. Individuals who are already familiar with topics and those who dedicate more time per week may finish faster and others may need additional time to master the skills in the course.

Are there prerequisites for the Data Science track?Students should start with the following as a minimum:• A high school level of mathematics knowledge.• A basic familiarity with computers and productivity software such as Excel.• A basic knowledge of programming concepts - such as variables, loops, and conditional logic.

Students should ideally also have:• The ability to use Excel to manipulate data and create basic reports• A fundamental knowledge of statistics

Note: Existing skills in R or Python will be extremely helpful, but the program will teach the basics required to complete the coursework.

Do I need any special software or cloud services to complete the Data Science track?Each course will describe its individual requirements. In many cases you will be able to use a free trial version of the required software or services – note that a valid credit card may be required to sign up for some trial services. Additionally, while many courses can be completed using a Windows, Linux, or Mac OSX computer; some courses will require a Windows computer.

What is the Data Science capstone project?In the final capstone project, you will showcase the knowledge and skills you've acquired during the Microsoft Professional Program for Data Science, and solve a real-world data science problem. The project takes the form of a challenge in which you will explore a dataset and develop a machine learning solution.
