APA News...Mr Damien Sullivan

The school newsletter is moving to the Parent Portal – Have you logged in yet? From next week our school newsletter will be moved from the school public website to the Parent Portal. You will still receive an email to let you know that the newsletter is available, but you will then have to login with your portal password to open it. This means that only parents who have created their Parent Portal account will be able to view our newsletters. As you would now be aware Sts Peter and Paul’s has launched our Parent Portal – a new school community access space exclusively for our families. The portal holds a range of information and is also the space we ask parents to:

Update contact details

View the school calendar

Download commonly used forms

Notify the school of a child being away

Access the newsletter

and view photos of school events

This week there are lots of great photos on the Parent Portal from our Senior Athletics Carnival last Thursday. How to login In the last week of Term 2, parents should have received an important email with their login details. Parents will need to activate their Parent Portal accounts as set out in the letter. If you haven’t received this notification yet, please notify the school office as we may not have up to date contact details for you. It is very important that parents activate their accounts and familiarise themselves with the parent portal. Much of the information that for the past two years could be found on the school website has now been moved to the more private location of the Parent Portal. Room for Growth

From time to time I like to share a quote that I feel as parents we need to remember (Happiness, E. Monkton, Harper Collins, 2007). From the “butterfly of freedom”:

“Why do you fly outside the box?” “I fly outside the box because I can.”

“But we know the box. We are safe inside the box.” “That, my friend, is why I leave it. For you may be safe…..

But I AM FREE!” The quote touches a chord with me because it speaks of risk-taking and exploring and experiencing all that life has to offer. Whilst nurturing and supporting our children it is important to also allow them to leave the safety of the “nest”; for the butterfly to emerge from the cocoon and experience all the inherent joy and satisfaction. It is also vital to allow children to make the mistakes and feel the discomfort that comes as a consequence. At Sts Peter & Paul’s our teachers promote the idea that it is through our mistakes that we learn. They are seen as opportunities for growth. Remember, “children aren’t made of china” (Children Aren’t Made of China, McCaskill, 2002) Playground Champions Congratulations to Lilyrna (4B), April (2R), Henry (2R) and Caitlin (5G) who were drawn out of the box as Playground Champions at our last assembly. They have been helping our school to be a happy and safe place for students. Be a Great Learner! Special congratulations also to our students drawn out as our Great Learners for last week. Isabella (4B) has been independent, Jules (1Y) was reflective, Claudia (2R) has shown creativity and Grace (2G) was being collaborative. Keep up the wonderful learning boys and girls! Have a great week. Damien Sullivan Assistant Principal

Book Bytes

Welcome to Week 2. Class borrowing has started again and we will begin looking at the shortlisted books from the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA). We will also explore this year’s theme ‘Books Light up our World’. We will celebrate Book Week in Week 9 from Monday 7th September until Friday 12th September. On Wednesday 9th September we will have our Book Week Celebration. We are asking students in Prep – Year 3 to come dressed to celebrate their love of reading and books. Students can dress up as a character from a book (fiction) or come in theme from a special interest (non – fiction). Students will have a parade in the Good Samaritan Hall at 9am.

Costumes can be simple and using things you already have at home. Do you have a master chef in the making? Why not dress up as a cook? (Apron and cooking utensil). A fan of adventure stories? (Wear a backpack, make a map and bring a torch).

Premier’s Reading Challenge The Premier’s Reading Challenge continues until August 28th, so remember to keep track of your reading on your reading log. If you have finished recording your reading please send it into the Library so we can register your details. If you want to find out more ask Library staff, class teachers or check out the website. scored two good goals in the second half to win the match 2-0. Thank you to all girls in the team for your wonderful spirit in preparing for this game. Thanks also to Mr Sullivan and Mr Gibson for organising the game.

SAVE THE DATE: TRIVIA DOWN UNDER – 12 SEPTEMBER 2015 Well it’s that time again … time to start planning your team, your costume and your tables for what is set to be another fun-filled and exciting night of trivia. This year we are celebrating all things Aussie! Whether you are a team of Happy Little Vegemites or a bunch of Aussie Cricket Team hopefuls, it’s time to gather the troops and brush up on all things that make us uniquely Australian. The night promises to be full of laughs and good spirited competition and whether you are winners or losers, live music and dancing will ensure that the night ends on a high note for everyone. As always the night will be BYO drinks and food, with antipasto platters available for pre-order. Entry is $15 per person and tables of 8 or 10 will be available. So lock the date (12 September) into your calendars and stay tuned for further details regarding booking your table via the Trybooking website when we go live next week! Litter Free Lunches A huge thank you goes to all students, parents and teachers that brought a litter free lunch box to school last Thursday. A great effort was made to reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste generated by the school that day. Students across the school

were enthused by doing their bit to help the environment. Please continue to support this initiative by packing a litter free lunch box every Thursday as part of Plastic Free July (or make it a habit every day!). This week, parents from the Health and Wellbeing Committee will be providing a stall to showcase some of the products we have found useful to ensure a litter free lunch box. Please come along and see us before school on Wednesday and at the end of school on Friday. Some ideas for lunch boxes that will assist you to pack waste free can be found on the following websites: https://littlebentoworld.com/ http://www.trendyliltreats.com.au/go-green-lunch-box-sets/ http://www.fliplid.com.au/buy-flip-lid/ http://www.reusablesetc.com.au/ http://www.namemystuff.com.au/ – personalised Sistema Products http://www.tupperware.com.au/ Nude Food Movers Range from Coles / Woolworths http://biome.com.au Here is a great blog on sustainability with some useful tips http://conversationswithmysister.com.au/

Bookclub

You should have now received your brochures for Issue 5 of the Scholastic Book Club. Thank you to all parents who ordered from the last issue. Your orders raised over $400 for new books/resources last term. We have had lots of parents successfully using the Scholastic LOOP system to place their orders online, so please try this out if you haven’t already. Please place all online orders or return your paper orders to the school office by Wednesday 29 July.

As your new co-ordinators we hope to find Book Club as rewarding as Justine and Kylie have for the last 2 plus years. We thank them for the time they have dedicated to coordinating Book Club and wish them both well.

School Banking

School Tokens were replaced this term with a circled number on your banking book slip to indicate how many times you have banked. A reward prize can be claimed when you have 10 tokens. A slip will be placed in your banking book to remind you to order your reward when you next bank. The Term 3 School Banking competition has commenced. Students simply need to make three or more deposits during Term 3 and they will automatically be entered into the competition for a chance to win one of hundreds of prizes. You can also complete a Money Mission at www.commbank.com.au/prizeportal to double your chance of winning a prize. Stock is low on the handball rewards, this reward will not be restocked. The invisible pens are currently out of stock and a new order will be arriving soon. Happy Banking from your school banking co-ordinators Deb Waldron, Amanda Monckton, Melody Phillips, Cath Palmer, Sonia Horsburgh, Airoleene Chaw, Peta Perring and Maria Hatzifotis.

Shoebox Appeal

Thank you to those families who have already sent in their filled shoeboxes. There is still time to fill a shoebox if you haven’t already done so. We are collecting shoeboxes through until the end of this term.
