Why in news: Punjab Seeks British Govt Apology for
Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.
The Government of Punjab has sought
an apology from the British
Government for the Jallianwala Bagh
massacre.
A resolution demanding an apology
from the British Government was passed unanimously from the
Punjab Assembly.
An unarmed but large crowd had gathered on 13 April 1919 at
Jallianwalla Bagh to protest against the arrest of their popular
leaders, Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satyapal.
Jallianwala Bagh (located in Amritsar, Punjab) was a large open
space which was enclosed on three sides by buildings and had
only one exit.
General Dyer surrounded the Bagh (garden) with his army until
closed the exit with his troops, and then ordered his men to
shoot onto the trapped crowd.
They fired till their ammunition was exhausted.
Thousands were killed and wounded.
After this massacre, martial law was proclaimed throughout
the Punjab and the people were submitted to most uncivilized
atrocities.

Why in news: Tejas, world’s lightest fighter, is battle ready.
India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)
Tejas has received the final
operational clearance (FOC) from
military aviation regulator for
induction into the Indian Air Force
(IAF) as a weaponised fighter jet.
The LCA Tejas is an Indian single-seat, single-jet engine, multi-
role light fighter.
It’s design is highly manoeuvrable, with a tailless, compound
delta wing configuration.
It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme,
which began in the 1980s to replace India’s ageing MiG-21
fighters.
Later, the LCA was officially named “Tejas”, meaning “Radiant”
by the then Prime Minister.
It is the smallest and lightest in its class of contemporary
supersonic combat aircraft.
It is designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA)
and developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the
Indian Air Force and Navy.
This indigenously produced will reduce the monetary
constrains, and provide more efficiency to Indian Defence.

The progress of the Khilafat movement alarmed the district
administration in Malabar.
The police tried to arrest the Secretary of the local Khilafat
Committee.
This led to wide spread riots, which engulfed the taluks of
Ernad and Valluvanad.
The Mappilas attacked police stations, looted government
property and destroyed buildings.
The rebellion was at last suppressed by the government with
an iron hand.
Modern historians look upon the rebellion of 1921 as a part of
the national upheaval against the British authority and not as a
mere uprising of the Mappilas.
The Wagon Tragedy took place in connection with the Malabar
rebellion.
