And the Two Shall be as One

If we spend any time reading the Book of Genesis and the story of Creation, it is clear that God created us for relationship. First and foremost, we are called into relationship with God who has loved us from the beginning and whose love is made manifest in Jesus, Emmanuel (“God-with-Us”). The first reading for today is often proclaimed at weddings, and it stands both in union with and contrast to today’s Gospel. The “Adam’s-rib” moment of the Genesis passage and Adam’s response ("This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh…”) seems a bit odd but it is actually a clever play on words that works in Hebrew only. In sum, God creates Man and Woman each with his or her own gifts as the perfect gift to each other. They are equals before God and others, and an exquisite complement to each other.

From that creative reality comes the Sacrament of Matrimony where the two become one in a sacred bond, sanctified by Christ who imparts grace. While it’s tough to hear Jesus talk about divorce, I believe that by doing so He gives credence to the understanding that relationships – even the most joyful and life-giving -- are not without challenge. With Christ at the center of ALL relationships, the struggles can be easier because Christ knows what it is like to have felt unloved at times. With Christ as the model for self-giving, we understand better the need to make sacrifices so that marriages and friendships can truly be grounded in mutual love and fidelity. When that bond is tested by hardship, infidelity, and hurt, it is a difficult road that should not be traveled alone. If you are in a difficult relationship, reach out to God, to someone you trust, and don’t try to tough it out on your own. The priests and deacons of this parish will help with reflective listening, the promise to find those who can help, the trust of confidentiality, and the gift of prayer. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Our God is all about relationships. I love how God blesses those who emerge from difficult marriages to find a peacefulness and a newness of life. I love how God calls some of us to the single life in order to be available to many with gifts that come from God. I love how God blesses us with opportunities to grow in our love with God and friends we haven’t met yet. I love how God and Jesus teach us that all of our struggles in relationships should be placed at the foot of the Cross so that we can look up at Christ and then look at one another and say “I’m sorry.”

When Christ is a part of any relationship, grace abounds. Invite God into all your relationships and watch what happens.

Keeping you in prayer always, Father Rob

RCIA, The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is an awakening to Christ for those seeking out the Catholic Church and comes about in a variety of ways. The first step for some is a sense that “something is missing”, that there is more to life than what they now have, or a better way to live than how they now live. For many others, the journey begins because of a relationship with a Catholic – a close friend or spouse. Some were baptized Catholic but did not receive any other sacraments. Still others are drawn by seeing the example of a Catholic life well lived. Whatever the reason for the awakening and decision to seek, the RCIA process is the first step on a lifelong journey of intellectual, emotional, and spiritual conversion.

Please contact Deacon Bill Santulli at 203 940-0711 or [email protected] if you have questions or would like further information.
