Pattishall and District Good Neighbours ClubIt is on a rather sad note that I start my message to you this month. One of ourmembers, John Barker died at the age of ninety in May and our thoughts are withKathy. John entertained us on a number of occasions on the organ and on hisviolin, at times accompanied by Kathy who sang to us. He will be missed.

In May we had been looking forward so much to a return visit by the HomesteadSingers who were unable to come at the last minute. The day was however savedby Hilary Aslett who at only a few hours’ notice came along with one of her quizzeswhich everyone enjoyed.

In June we had our first outing of the year, to the Cotswolds.

In July we have a visit from Margaret Burgon with her Tales of a Vicars Wife.

In August we bring the outdoors indoors when Peter Gout takes us down the RiverNene in Words and Pictures.

September takes us on another journey down a river. This time we shall be going toBedford for a four hour boat trip with a ploughman’s lunch on board.

All in all we have an interesting and relaxing programme ahead of us. If you are 50or over and at a loose end do come along to one of our meetings (or outings) whereyou will be made most welcome.

If anyone would like to come to the match it would be great to see you and we willappreciate the support!!!

Match Report - Farthingstone Nomads

After a couple of fairly casual practice sessions, we threw ourselves into the deepend and played our first game against Farthingstone Nomads at Preston Capes.

With half the team having not played cricket for 15-20 years there were a few nervesbefore the match but we all settled in and whilst fielding at least looked like a cricketteam!

A pretty solid fielding/bowling display limited Farthingstone to 136, however thewheels came off a little when batting and we only managed to reply with 75.

Man of the match Scott Browne top scored on 40 and took one wicket, John Strettonwas a close contender for man of the match with two wickets and a catch andChristian Brient and Dennis Townsend both put in solid performances taking onewicket each and making good contributions to the run total. A special mentionshould be made for the last wicket bowled by Mark Couling and majestically caughtby Dave Dawson!

As this was our first match we expected to have a few firsts and needless to say thefines pot was pretty full!! Mentioning no names, first run out, dropped catch andgolden duck were all covered!!!

Our Duke of Edinburgh Award group recently completed their expedition, campingand trekking through the fields in Silverstone and beyond, with an overnight stay inthe tents which they had carried themselves; the strength our students displayed -both physical and emotional – during the expedition ensured a successful outcomefor all involved. Well done!

As a school, we also value the positive contribution made by many Campionstudents in community events. A good number of our students recently took part inthe Gang Show, supported by their friends and fellow students in the audience.Congratulations to all for their involvement and support too!

Our Year 11 and post-16 students have worked hard in preparation for their externalexams and I know you will join me in wishing them all the very best.

The Battle’s Over – A National TributeOn 3rd August 1914, Britain’s Foreign Minister, Sir Edward Grey, was looking out ofhis office window. It was dusk, and the gas lights were being lit along London’s Mall, leading to Buckingham Palace, when he remarked to a friend, “The lamps are goingout all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” Our country wasabout to be plunged into the darkness of the First World War, which formally endedon 11th November 1918.

In commemoration and remembrance of the end ofthe War and the many millions who were killed orcame home dreadfully wounded, 1000 Beacons ofLight will be lit at 7pm on 11th November 2018throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands,Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories - acentury after the guns fell silent.

Towcester & District Angling AssociationThe club are organising working parties at our new lake, Seven Acres(Cuttle Mill), to meet at 9:30 am. They are looking for volunteers to help

with weed clearance, strimming, mowing and other general work. This is a greatopportunity for you to help improve this new club water and meet other clubmembers. It will be great to see people there.

Work has been ongoing at Astwell Mill, most notably with regards to the weedgrowth problem. There will shortly be a three year project underway in conjunctionwith the Environment Agency and the Angling Trust which consists of spraying theweed and constructing a filtration pond to remove the fertilizers and silt that runs intothe lakes, causing the weed problem. I have been told that you will see a differencethis year, which will continue to improve as the project progresses.

There will also be work to further improve and extend the pegs and access. Again, volunteers for working parties would be very much appreciated.

As you may have seen, an 18.8lb Carp has recently been caught at Silverlake. That’s an excellent size. Let’s hope we see more of these over the summer.

And lastly, for the upcoming season club books will be lowered to £35.00.

council have received favourable comments about how smart the verges and grassareas look and would be further pleased to hear residents’ thoughts. The wildflowers and daffodils were allowed to flourish to add colour to our verges and havebeen skilfully mown around, but have been tidied up now the flowers have died backand allowed to regenerate. The council thanked David Keeble for all his hard work inliaising with All Seasons. The Litter Pick on March 18th organised by John Woollettsaw adults and children collect several bags of rubbish. The waysides of the roadsentering our parish yielding the majority of the litter collected. A big thank you to allthose who took part.

HighwaysDavid Hodges reported that the roads at both Booth Close and Orchard Court hadbeen tarmacked. Butchers Lane was top dressed in May and there has been someresurfacing of Simons Walk and Leys Road. Residents still need to contact TheStreet Doctor to report potholes as this seems to be the most effective way to get aresponse.

Prisoner of War Camp MemorialMr. Peter Stratton has contacted the parish council to say that in the region of £500pounds has so far been raised towards erecting a memorial and the council isconsidering how best to support this venture.

DogsIt has been reported to the council that there is persistent dog fouling of the pathsaround and leading to the church and around the bench opposite to the turning in toThe Beeches. From the presents left it appears to be a rather large dog and wouldthe owner please dispose of their pet’s poo in the appropriate manner. Plastic bagscontaining dog muck should be disposed of in the bins provided or taken home andnot thrown in the verges or tied to branches like Christmas decorations! Dog Foulingposters are to be posted throughout the parish as an extra reminder to thosepersistent offenders. Also, at this time of the year when small lambs are around theyseem to enjoy escaping through gaps in stiles so would dog owners please put backin position any ‘lamb obstacles’ they may come across.

New Homes BonusThe New Homes Bonus is a pot of money that the parish receives for every newhouse built and any group or organisation that needs support to operate is welcometo apply for a New Homes Bonus Grant. Details from The Clerk, Mrs. Ann Addison.

FlypostingSeveral events are advertised on telegraph poles around the parish many of whichare not within our locality. Residents may remove them, especially after the eventhas happened but we request that this is done promptly by the event organiser.

Parish Council ResponsibilitiesQuite often people query what responsibilities lie within the jurisdiction of the parishcouncil and the latest edition of SNC Review published the following list which mayprove helpful: drainage of ditches and ponds, entertainment & the arts, footpaths, war memorials, public benches, parks, flower beds.

AllotmentsThe new Allotment Association is very busy and most weekends the area is a hiveof activity. The Parish Council were pleased to agree a payment of £400 towardsthe upkeep of the allotments and are pleased to see this community asset betterused and organised.

Produce ShowThe Parish Council were once again pleased to support the Annual Produce Showto be held on Sunday 10th September. They hoped that the donation of £150 wouldenable the Show to flourish and be a success.

Cricket ClubThe Parish Council is pleased to support the newly formed cricket club and hasoffered a financial loan to cover expenses should the club’s grant be delayed. Theclub plays their first match on a proposed newly matted pitch on July 15th. Theyhave 18 signed up but are keen for other residents to join them.

Merchant Navy DaySeptember 3rd is Merchant Navy Day and throughout the country those propertieswith flag poles are asked to fly the Red Duster: more details from the Parish Clerk.

School Parking IssueSadly, after an improvement in poor parking at drop off and collection times thesituation has arisen again. PCSO Stephanie Bacon is to attend the next parishcouncil meeting where this issue will be discussed along with other concerns suchas crime and dog fouling. Please do come and join us as you may wish to askquestions that are of concern to you.

PlanningThis is always a contentious issue and although the parish council receives andcomments on planning applications it is ultimately South Northants Council thatmake the decisions. There have been concerns raised about the height of aHarefield Farm building and the council listened to residents who attended the lastmeeting. Mark Mitton, our councillor for planning & building is to seek clarificationabout past and proposed developments and residents were directed to contact SNCas this may also be an appropriate recourse for their concerns.

Praying for the CommunityThere is ‘Prayer Box’ on the wall outside the Chapel. This is for any member of ourCommunity – that is from any village in the area – to be able to drop in the name ofsomeone they would like us to pray for. We don’t need to know the details, just afirst name is sufficient. That person will be included in our time of prayer on thefollowing Sunday. In addition, at 9.30am on the first Sunday of the month, there will be a half hour ofprayer specifically for the Community. Anyone may join us for a time of quiet orsimple spoken prayer. Our normal 10.30am service will follow after a cuppa.
