Mission Statement of the Annual Meeting

Meeting Evaluation Form

GOS Vision Statement

The mission of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society is to help Georgia Orthopaedic Surgeons provide quality care and lead rewarding professional lives.

The Georgia Orthopaedic Society will accomplish our mission statement by: 1. Offering orthopaedic surgeons’ educational programs on clinical and practice management

topics.2. Conducting advocacy efforts on behalf of orthopaedic surgeons and patients.3. Providing opportunities to foster personal and professional relations among orthopaedic

surgeons; and4. Promoting the specialty of orthopaedic surgery to the general public.

The mission of The Georgia Orthopaedic Society is to provide pertinent, quality continuing medical education for practicing orthopaedic surgeons. The annual meeting and other educational meetings of our society strive to do so by affording an opportunity for orthopaedists throughout the state to exchange ideas regarding patient care. This is done through formal and

informal discussions relevant to orthopaedic issues and through scientific presentations by orthopaedists with pertinent clinical or research expertise. The result of each program of the Society is to enable orthopaedists to achieve and maintain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to provide patient care at optimum levels.

A meeting evaluation form will be emailed to you after the meeting has concluded. A CME certificate will be sent after we receive a completed evaluation. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Georgia Orthopaedic

Society. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

G GOS PRESIDENTIAL GUEST SPEAKER

James Ninomiya, M.D.

Jim Ninomiya is a practicing orthopaedic surgeon who has spent his entire career in academic medicine. Specializing in adult reconstruction, after over twenty years at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, he is now a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

He grew up in the New York City suburbs and then moved to Woodstock, New York where he went to the University at Albany and studied chemistry and then obtained a master’s degree in organic chemistry. After working for IBM, he then attended the University of Vermont for medical school and residency. During this time, he did a two-year NIH sponsored research fellowship in the biochemistry of non-collagenous bone proteins. Following this, he did a fellowship in adult reconstruction and orthopaedic cell biology with Victor Goldberg at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

He has served on a number of NIH study sections and reviews manuscripts for JBJS, the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Arthroplasty, and others. He has served on the program committee for the Orthopaedic Research Society and currently is on

the board of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of the Judiciary Committee for the AAOS.

In his spare time, he enjoys flying aerobatics as well as going cross-country between meetings. He also plays the French horn and was actively involved in many musical ensembles throughout his career. Finally, he also enjoys photography and hiking, and has taken great pleasure in exploring and photographing the beautiful New Mexico landscapes.

He has also served for over twenty years in the Air Force, and most recently was a chief flight surgeon in the Wisconsin Air National Guard at the rank of colonel. He has travelled around the world for humanitarian and educational purposes for the Air Force and considers this a unique and memorable highlight of his career.

He is most proud of his career in the Air Force, where he believes the camaraderie and sense of purpose are unequalled as a civilian. His presentations will include his experiences as a practicing orthopaedic surgeon, as well as his unique training and experience as a military orthopaedic surgeon.

LELAND C. MCCLUSKEY, M.D.

Dr. Leland C. McCluskey, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at St. Francis Orthopaedic Institute, specializes in foot and ankle surgery as well as general orthopaedic surgery. He is the former Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery for St. Francis Hospital.

Hailing from Columbus, Dr. McCluskey is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the Medical College of Georgia, where he received a number of honors. He completed his residency at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans, then spent a year in the orthopaedic foot and ankle fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Upon returning to Columbus, Dr. McCluskey joined the Hughston Clinic, where he was a partner for nearly 10 years. During that time, Dr. McCluskey also served as staff member or consultant at Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital, The Medical Center, Doctors Hospital, and Crisp Regional Hospital. In 2001, along with his brother, Dr. George McCluskey, he became one of the founders of McCluskey Orthopaedic Surgery, which became part of the St. Francis Orthopaedic Institute in 2006.

He is a member of the Medical Association of Georgia, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the North American Foot and Ankle Association, and the Christian Medical and Dental Association, among others. He has also authored chapters in four leading orthopaedics textbooks and 14 scientific articles. His commitment to continuing education has been ongoing since he began practicing medicine.

Another strong and ongoing commitment has been to charitable work. Dr. McCluskey has served for many years as a medical missionary with World Medical Mission, a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse. Each year since 2004, he has donated between two and four weeks of his time to this cause, working in Kenya, Honduras, Haiti, Nepal and Ecuador.
