Regarded by the Australian Council of Learned Academies as the most innovative research pathway model, the Master of Research (MRes) prepares you to complete a PhD in three years – well short of the national average.

PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe two-year course is available in all of Macquarie’s research areas and, subject to academic approval, allows you to construct a course relevant to your specific interests.

In the first year, you’ll undertake advanced coursework units, while during the second year you’ll specialise in research preparation and focus on a specific research topic. You are required to submit a thesis of 20,000 words for completion.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSThis course requires a bachelor degree from a recognised institution with a minimum overall GPA of 4.38 on a 7-point scale and GPA of 5.25 at 300 level, although some disciplines may have extra admission requirements.

If you hold an honours or masters degree, you may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) (the equivalent of Year 1). This may allow you to complete the Master of Research in less than two years. Upon successful completion, you may be eligible to progress to one of Macquarie’s research courses: the Master of Philosophy or the Doctor of Philosophy.

ARE THERE APPLICATION DEADLINES?For most courses, there are no specific deadlines; however, we recommend international students submit their applications at least three months before the session commences. A few specialist courses have specific deadlines with more information available at courses.mq.edu.au

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS?Most of our scholarships are assessed automatically at the time of your course application. To apply for scholarship, you must first submit a course application and receive an 8-digit Macquarie student number. For scholarships that require a separate application process, we recommend you submit your scholarship application after receiving an offer for your course.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M ELIGIBLE FOR MY CHOSEN COURSE?The best way to determine your eligibility for your chosen course is to submit a free application to us. We are unable to provide pre-assessment advice. Visit mq.edu.au/academic-requirements for more information.

CAN I WORK WHILE I STUDY?If you wish to work while studying, you must hold a visa with permission to work. This allows you to work for a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight while your course is in session and for unlimited hours during break. Refer to homeaffairs.gov.au for more information.

Scholarships and living costs

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPHighly competitive, based on academic merit and valued up to AUD$10,000 applied towards your tuition fees. Applicants must complete an online application after receiving a full course offer.

COUNTRY AND REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIPValued at AUD$5000 or AUD$10,000 per year for undergraduate and postgraduate students of select countries. The scholarship amount is applied towards your tuition fees for duration of your program. Eligible students will be assessed automatically for this scholarship at the time of course application.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIPA 50 per cent tuition fee scholarship for English language programs of up to 10 weeks, when packaged with a coursework degree, for students from select countries. Eligible students will be assessed automatically for this scholarship at the time of course application.

MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPAUD$3,000 one-off tuition fee grant deducted from your commencement fee for students commencing the Standard Foundation and Diploma programs at the Macquarie University International College. Eligible students will be assessed automatically for this scholarship at the time of course application.

UNDERGRADUATEFor direct admission into an undergraduate (bachelor) course, you will need one of the following qualifications:

• a recognised high school qualification or university entrance exam – see the following page for a selection of accepted qualifications

• a recognised university foundation course – we accept foundation courses from most Australian universities, as well as from some approved international providers

• a recognised diploma or associate degree deemed equivalent to Australian diploma or advanced diploma level

SELECTION RANKMacquarie uses a selection rank based on the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) to determine the minimum eligibility requirements for entry to each undergraduate course. See the tables on the next few pages for conversion of the selection rank into the minimum score you need for your qualification.

Academic entry requirementsOur students come from diverse backgrounds and bring a range of qualifications and perspectives that makes study at Macquarie an exciting experience.

POSTGRADUATEThe course listings in this guide will note the specific entry requirements for our postgraduate (masters) coursework degrees. In most cases, entry requires a qualification recognised at Australian bachelor degree level or higher. Our Admissions team will determine whether your bachelor degree meets the requirement when you apply to Macquarie.

Entry to some courses may require a degree in a specific or related field of study and/or achievement of a particular weighted average mark (WAM) out of 100. Relevant work experience or professional accreditation may also be considered.

WEIGHTED AVERAGE MARK (WAM)A weighted average mark (WAM) represents your overall academic performance and is based on a percentage average (out of 100) of all your attempted study. The tables on pages 102–103 provide indicative WAM conversions for common grading systems in your country.

Double degree options exist for this course. Minimum entry scores for double degrees align with the higher requirement of the two single degrees. Degree has a choice of major or specialisation

STANDARD ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTFor entry to most Macquarie University courses, the Standard English language requirement is Academic IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band (or equivalent). Some courses – including in education, law and medicine – have higher Special English requirements. The course tables in this guide list the required level of English proficiency for entry to each course.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTSThere are several ways you can meet the English language requirements. The most frequently used methods are:• passing an approved English language test at the required level • holding a qualification from an approved country with English as the language of instruction• completing an approved high school qualification or foundation program with study in English• completing an approved English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program.

APPROVED COUNTRIES FOR ENGLISH AS THE LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION

If you completed a senior secondary qualification or at least one year full-time study at tertiary level with English as the language of instruction in one of the following countries, you will be deemed to meet the Standard English language requirement. The study must have been completed within five years of your commencement at Macquarie University (some exceptions apply).

Undergraduate academic entry requirementsGLOBALGCE A-Levels

Scores for the UK and international versions of the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level Examinations (GCE A-Levels) are calculated based on the aggregate of the three best A-level subjects using the following conversions: A* = 6, A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1. At least two subjects must have been taken in the same academic year, and the third may be from the preceding or following academic year.

Both UK and international versions of the GCE A-Levels administered by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), Pearson Education International (Edexcel) and Oxford International AQA Examinations are assessed using these tables. Locally administered O-Level and A-Level examinations for Singapore, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are assessed using their own separate tables.

GLOBALIB

Scores for the International Baccalaureate (IB) are calculated based on the final aggregate result for six subjects, including any bonus points from Theory of Knowledge subject and Extended Essay. This must include one subject from each of Groups 1–5 (Language & Literature; Language Acquisition; Individuals and Societies; Sciences; and Mathematics) and a sixth subject from either Group 6 (Arts) or a second selection from Groups 1–5. A minimum of three subjects must be completed at Higher Level (HL), with the remainder at Standard Level (SL).

AUSTRALIAHSC

Scores for the Australian High School Certificate (HSC) from New South Wales (or equivalent qualifications from other state boards) are based on the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).

AUSTRALIAAustralian Foundation

Scores for Australian Foundation programs recognised by Macquarie University are calculated based on the overall final result out of 10.0 or by converting percentage marks to a 10-point scale. For entry to some degree programs, students may need to have successfully completed suitable Mathematics or other specified subjects as part of their foundation program.

Scores for the Canadian Alberta High School Diploma (AHSD) are calculated as an average of the final official mark for the best four examined Level 30 subjects including English Language Arts 30.

Scores for the Canadian British Columbia Certificate of Graduation (BCCG) are calculated as an average of final marks of the four best Grade 12 Ministry-developed subjects including English 12.

CANADAOSSD

Scores for the Canadian Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) are calculated as an average of the six best Grade 12 subjects including English - ENG4U. Subjects must be designated with a U (university preparation), M (university/college preparation) or Z (university-delivered dual credit).

CHINAGao Kao

Scores are based on the final Chinese National Entrance Examination (Gao Kao) score out of 750. Total scores and requirements are different for three provinces: Hainan, Jiangsu and Shanghai.
