Written Evidence Sustained Investigation In my investigation, I explored how changes in lighting and composition
affect a viewer's experience of food photography. I tried different intensities and temperatures of light. I also learned new food photography composition rules.
Lighting-wise, I began with brighter photos with less defined shadows as can be seen in piece 1. Later on, I tested darker and more direct shadows, adding character to pieces 13 and 14. I also played with different temperatures of light, first pairing bluer lighting with cold subjects such as the frozen cubes in piece 5. Then, I tried pairing warm lighting with the cold ice cream in piece 15.
Compositionally, I first used simple diagonal lines such as those in pieces 1
and 2. As I grew more comfortable behind the camera, I created more
movement and interest with an s-curve in piece 3 and geometric repetition in
piece 4. I also learned to frame the subject by balancing props along the
edges of the photos in pieces 7 and 13.
I discovered that lighting affects the texture and mood of the food itself
while composition affects the movement and focus of a photo.

2021 AP® Art and Design 2-D Art and Design Sustained Investigation, Score 3/3/3/3
Scoring Criteria Rationale for Score
Row A: Inquiry – Score: 3
Written evidence identifies an inquiry that guides the sustained investigation. AND Visual evidence demonstrates the sustained investigation.
Written evidence identifies an inquiry (“I explored how changes in lighting and composition affect a viewer's experience of food photography”) and states how this guides the sustained investigation (“I discovered that lighting affects the texture and mood of the food itself while composition affects the movement and focus of a photo”). The inquiry that guided the sustained investigation is evident in the student writing: “I first used simple diagonal lines (images 1, 2, and 7). [A]s I grew more comfortable, I created more movement and interest with an s-curve (images 3) and geometric repetition (images 4, 5, 7, 11, and 15)...[l]ighting-wise, I began with brighter photos with less defined shadows (images 1, 3, and 4). Later on, I tested darker and more direct shadows, adding character (images 13 and 14). I also played with different temperatures of light, first pairing bluer lighting with cold subjects such as the frozen cubes (image 5). Then, I tried pairing warm lighting with the cold ice cream (image 15).” In this portfolio, the written evidence gives insight into how the student progressed through the sustained investigation.
The visual evidence presents additional discoveries via storytelling. The compositions in images 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, and 15 all create a sense of time and suggest a story using multiple images, hand models, and interactions with the food itself. Further, the visual evidence presents subtlety as the whisk that makes the meringue echoes the shape of the cooked meringue, the crumbs in image 7 create a secondary diagonal trail, and the cookie in image 2 breaks apart in a linear progression from large to small pieces.
Row B: Practice, Experimentation, and Revision – Score: 3
Visual evidence of practice, experimentation, AND revision demonstrates development of the sustained investigation. AND Written evidence describes how the sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, OR revision.
This portfolio shows visual and written evidence of practice,
experimentation, AND revision. The processes used in making the images
link to the sustained investigation, and both written and visual evidence
show a purposeful engagement with materials, processes, and ideas.
The written evidence states: “I explored how changes in lighting and
composition affect a viewer's experience of food photography. I tried
different intensities and temperatures of light (images 9 and 15). I also
learned new food photography composition rules.” In images 1, 4, and 8,
the work shows varieties of approaches to lighting and composition
through s-curve compositions, color saturation, food manipulations, and
photo editing processes.
Practice, experimentation, and revision continue throughout the portfolio,
and the images display revision evident in complex and higher-level
images. “I also learned to frame the subject by balancing props along the
edges of the photos in pieces 7 and 13.” Images 8-15 further demonstrate
practice, experimentation, and revision. Cropping, framing, the intentional
use of side lighting, and intentional color choices in food and lighting
illustrate the development of the sustained investigation through practice,
experimentation, and revision.
Row C: Materials, Processes, and Ideas – Score: 3
Visual relationships among materials, processes, AND ideas are clearly evident and demonstrate synthesis.
Visual relationships among materials, processes, and ideas are clearly evident and demonstrate synthesis in this portfolio. The written evidence states “how changes in lighting and composition affect a viewer's experience of food photography.“ The artist’s intention is present in this portfolio and demonstrates an in-depth exploration of the subject.
The sustained investigation shows many clear and thoughtful design decisions. The work demonstrates development AND synthesis through the making and coloring of the food and compositional choices. The subject of each photograph in images 1 and 8 shows a comprehensive approach to preparing and manipulating visual forms in spatial relationships.
Images 3 and 4 demonstrate varied choices of color, pattern, geometric repetition, and intentional compositional choices with dynamic outcomes. In images 9 and 14, the use of framing and lighting provides emphasis for the viewer. The artist writes: “I discovered that lighting affects the texture and mood of the food itself while composition affects the movement and focus of a photo.“ This written discovery gives further insight into student processes and ideas. The student artist goes on to say, “I also played with different temperatures of light, first pairing bluer lighting with cold subjects such as the frozen cubes in piece 5. Then, I tried pairing warm lighting with the cold ice cream in piece 15.” In image 15, the student’s choice of colored lighting to suggest temperature, in contrast with the temperature of the food, further developing the inquiry.
The preponderance of evidence throughout the portfolio indicates a high level of achievement with materials, processes, and ideas.
Row D: 2-D/3-D/Drawing Art and Design Skills – Score: 3
Visual evidence of good and advanced 2-D/3-D/Drawing skills.
The visual evidence in this portfolio demonstrates advanced 2-D skills. The images explore “how changes in lighting and composition affect a viewer's experience of food photography.” Sophisticated and refined images comprise the entire portfolio.
Highly developed compositions show sophisticated design skills and successful application of pattern, sequence, time, rhythm, movement, and hierarchy (images 2, 4, 8, 9, 11, and 15). For example, “I also played with different temperatures of light, first pairing bluer lighting with cold subjects such as the frozen cubes (image 5). Then, I tried pairing warm lighting with the cold ice cream (image 15).” In images 4, 8, and 14, color saturation in the food objects leads the eye through the compositions. Intentional and obvious color manipulation furthering the idea is demonstrated throughout the portfolio.
The visual evidence shows an advanced understanding of 2-D skills, using diagonal compositions (image 2), S-Curve compositions, color emphasis (image 1), and hierarchy (image 10). Cropping, framing, and juxtaposition in the designs also show dynamic and highly successful uses of 2-D skills.
The visual evidence in this portfolio demonstrates advanced 2-D skills.

Scoring Criteria Rationale for Score
2-D/3-D/Drawing Art and Design Skills
Visual evidence of advanced 2-D/3-D/Drawing skills.
The visual evidence demonstrates advanced 2-D skills. While all five images do not have to relate, these do, exploring food photography. In all, the visual evidence shows an advanced understanding of diagonal compositions (image 2), S-curve composition (image 1), color emphasis (images 1, 2, and 3), form repetitions (images 1-5), and color/shape/space unity (image 5). Symmetrical and asymmetrical balances show a dynamic and very successful use of 2-D skills.
Materials, Processes, and Ideas
Visual relationships among materials, processes, and ideas are clearly evident and demonstrate synthesis.
Visual relationships among materials, processes, and ideas are clearly evident and demonstrate synthesis. Quotes from the processes and ideas text furthers this evidence. “[W]arm direct lighting and harsh shadows juxtapose cold soft ice cream” (image 5); varying “plate sizing anchors photo in bottom left and s-curve creates movement towards upper right” (image1); “framing higher angle photos involves layering and movement, warm backlighting enhances texture” (image 3). Colors such as green create emphasis and focus (images 1 and 2), while a split-complementary color harmony of yellow, red-violet, blue-violet creates vibrance and connection (image 3).
