Dear Parents,

This year, the School of Performing Arts will celebrate its 10th year as a part of the SBC

Woodway Campus Worship Ministry. As we look back over the years, we are grateful to God

for the work that He has accomplished in and through our students’ lives—and the work

that He continues. It is our purpose and prayer in the School of Performing Arts to train our

students in excellence musically and artistically, while building a heart for ministry in our

students.

You will find our schedule for the coming year in the pages that follow. We look forward to

following the Lord where He will lead us this year.

Our private lesson program is structured into 14-week semesters in the fall and spring. Lessons are held weekly between teacher and stu-dent, on the Woodway Campus, and are 30 minutes in length. Gen-eral times available are listed below. Our spring semester concludes with an official end-of-year recital.

fall for our production of Disney’s “The Aristocats: Kids!”

This stage production is based on the 1970 Walt Disney

Studios film of the same name. Join Duchess and her

kittens on their adventures through Paris and the sur-

rounding countryside. Meet unexpected friends—and vil-

lains—along the way.

Featuring new music, as well as original music by the

Sherman Brothers, this show will be a fun introduction to

musical theatre.

ALL STUDENTS WHO REGISTER FOR MUSICAL THEATRE

ARE PLACED IN THE CAST FOR THE SEMESTER.

The SPA Musical Theatre program is designed to expose students to healthy Broadway vocal technique, provide a strong foundation for musical theatre dance

styles, and prepare them for stage acting. Our goal is to develop confidence, stage presence, and a love for

performing. Through this course, we pray each child will learn to use his or her gifts to bring glory to God!

SPA DANCE The SBC School of Performing Arts

Dance program seeks to foster a love of dance through quality instruction in various types of

dance, with special emphasis on classical ballet, jazz, tap, musical

theatre, and hip hop, in a positive, Christ-centered environment.

Our dance classes are divided into three basic levels: PINK, for

dancers in Kindergarten and below; BLACK, for dancers in First

Grade and up; and TEAL, which is our most advanced level.

As our dancers continue in their studies, the black and teal lev-

els are divided further into combination, intermediate, and ad-

vanced classes, and our dance faculty take great care in placing

dancers in classes where they will have fun, be challenged, and

succeed as they grow in the art of dance.

PINK LEVEL PINK level dance classes are pre-ballet classes designed for danc-

ers beginning at age 3. Dancers in our PINK classes wear PINK leo-

tards.

BLACK LEVEL (COMBO & INTERMEDIATE CLASSES) COMBO & INTERMEDIATE are beginner/intermediate level ballet

classes designed for dancers of all experience levels. Ballet Com-

bos are named by general grade levels (i.e. Combo 1/2 Ballet &

Tap will be geared toward 1st & 2nd Grade.) Intermediate class

placement is by faculty recommendation and the classes are

geared toward dancers in grade 5 and up. Dancers should wear

black leotards, pink tights, and black skirts.

TEAL LEVEL TEAL level dancers should wear teal leotards, pink tights, and cov-

er-up skirts. Teal Level classes are considered Advanced and re-

quire faculty approval or invitation for enrollment.

We have restructured our upper level Ballet & Jazz classes this year to give our dancers

a more complete experience.

COMBO 3/4

Dancers in Combo 3/4 (3rd-4th Grade) are invited to

take class twice a week this year.

• MONDAYS @ 4:00-5:00 pm: Join Mrs. Sarah and

Intermediate level dancers for COMBO 3/4 &

INTERMEDIATE JAZZ. This class will give our

growing dancers a full 60-minute jazz class.

• TUESDAYS @ 5:15-6:15 pm: Join Ms. Heather for 60

minutes of Ballet. Enrollment in the Ballet class

is required to attend the Jazz class.

INTERMEDIATE BALLET 1 & 2 LEVEL

Intermediate Ballet will be split into two tracks this

year.

INTERMEDIATE BALLET 1: Tuesdays @ 4:00-5:15 pm

Dancers will attend Ballet on Tuesdays only for 75 minutes of technique. This class will be open to dancers

based on teacher recommendation or for middle school dancers with previous experience.

INTERMEDIATE BALLET 2: Tuesdays @ 4:00-5:15 pm

Thursdays @ 7:00-7:30 pm

Dancers will attend Ballet Technique on Tuesdays for 75 minutes; and Beginning/Pre-Pointe on Thursdays.

This level is for dancers who are on the pointe track or are interested in beginning training for dancing en

pointe. Teacher approval or recommendation is required to enroll in this track.

INTERMEDIATE JAZZ

Dancers are invited to join Mrs. Sarah for a new, full 60 minutes of Jazz! This class is open to all Intermedi-

ate dancers. This class will be combined with dancers from Combo 3/4.

INTERMEDIATE JAZZ (with Combo 3/4): Mondays @ 4:00-5:00 pm

FIRST STEPS TO BROADWAY A new class for 2nd-4th Grade Dancers!

Thursdays @ 5:00-5:45

Join Ms. Heather on Thursdays for “First Steps

to Broadway” — an introduction to Musical

Theatre choreography in an age-appropriate

environment. This class introduces the young

performer to Broadway style jazz and tap tech-

niques. This class is perfect for our Musical

Theatre students and any young actresses or

actors.

This class is beginner level, but teacher

recommendation or approval is required.

ADVANCED BALLET

1 & 2 Advanced Ballet will be split into

two tracks this year and meet on

multiple days.

ADVANCED BALLET 1:

Tuesdays @ 7:00-8:00 pm;

Thursdays @ 3:00-4:00 pm;

Thursdays @ 7:00-7:30 pm

Dancers will attend the first hour of

Tuesday’s Advanced Ballet block.

An additional hour of technique will be offered on Thursdays at 3:00 pm and Beginning/Pre-Pointe on Thurs-

days at 7:00 pm. If a dancer cannot attend Thursdays at 3:00 pm, a separate arrangement will be made.

ADVANCED BALLET 2: Tuesdays @ 7:00-9:00 pm, Thursdays @ 3:00-4:0 pm

Dancers will attend the full two hours of Advanced Ballet on Tuesdays—one hour technique, one hour en

pointe. An additional hour of technique will be offered on Thursdays at 3:00 pm. If a dancer cannot attend

Thursdays at 3:00 pm, a separate arrangement will be made.

ADVANCED JAZZ with LEAPS & TURNS

Join Mrs. Sarah on Mondays from 5:00-6:30 pm for a full, 90-minute Jazz class. This class will immediately be

followed by LEAPS & TURNS from 6:30-7:00 pm.

3 YEAR OLD BALLET, PRE-K BALLET, KINDER-BRIDGE BAL-

LET – These classes will focus on basic ballet and jazz dance

technique, rhythms, introducing French terminology and move-

ment quality. Emphasis will be placed on basic overall body alignment and placement of the body through

praise and worship music specific to age level. Dancers are required to wear pink leotard, pink tights, and

pink ballet shoes.

COMBINATION LEVEL CLASSES (COMBO 1/2, COMBO 3/4) – Classes are based on the dancer’s cur-

rent grade. For 2021-2022, Combo 1/2 will be a combination of ballet and tap and will meet for one hour.

Combo 3/4 will be a combination of ballet and jazz, which will be held on separate days. Combo classes will

focus on basic ballet technique, rhythms, terminology and movement quality, while utilizing Contemporary

Christian, popular, and classical music. Emphasis will be placed on basic overall body alignment and place-

ment of the body through praise and worship music specific to age level. Dancers in all Combo Levels are re-

quired to wear black leotard, pink ballet tights, pink ballet shoe. Students may bring cover up for warmth .

Combo 1/2 Tap will also require black Mary Jane-style tap shoes; Combo 3/4 Jazz will require a tan jazz shoe.

INTERMEDIATE BALLET 1 & 2 — These classes will focus on more advanced overall body alignment and

placement of the body. As the foundation of all dance movement, ballet strengthens dancers’ muscular de-

velopment, cultivates the initial grace of the student, and increases the control of body movement, self-

confidence, and self-discipline. Traditional barre, center work, and ballet combinations will be included

through praise and worship and Contemporary Christian music specific to student’s level of training. Danc-

ers are required to wear black leotard, pink ballet tights, and pink soft ballet shoe.

Dancers in INTERMEDIATE BALLET 1 meet for 75 minutes of technique once per week.

Dancers in INTERMEDIATE BALLET 2 are also enrolled in the

pointe track. Tuition includes the technique class, as well as a sep-

arate pre-pointe or beginning pointe class for dancers in this

group.

ADVANCED BALLET 1& 2 — This class will focus on more advanced overall body alignment and place-

ment of the body. As the foundation of all dance movement, ballet strengthens dancers’ muscular develop-

ment, cultivates the initial grace of the student, and increases the control of body movement, self-

confidence, and self-discipline. Traditional barre, center work, and ballet combinations will be included

through Contemporary Christian music specific to student’s level of training. Advanced Ballet is divided into

two tracks, which will meet together during technique classes. Class hours will be divided over multiple

days.

Dancers are required to wear teal leotard, pink ballet tights, and pink soft ballet shoe for technique. Pointe

shoes are required for pointe classes; dancers may attend pre-pointe in soft ballet shoes.

Faculty must approve of student’s enrollment in each level given student’s prior dance experience and train-

ing.

COMPANY – The SPA COMPANY is a performance group. Dancers will work on specific styles, com-

bining the Contemporary and Lyrical genres. The style uses fluid body movements combined with power

and control. It fuses newer philosophies of movement, including modern and contemporary dance, with

classical styles, such as ballet and jazz. This cre-

ates unique movement that is less formalized

than other types of dance, but still incorporates a strong foundation of technique. Students will continue to

develop their dance skills with musical interpretation, sustained extensions, fresh movement opportunities

and expressive emotion through praise and worship specific to age level. In addition, students will have the

opportunity to utilize their gift of dance in church services and ministry opportunities to perform and

demonstrate their abilities to lead in worship at Second Baptist Church. Students are required to wear black

or teal leotard, pink ballet tights, pink soft ballet shoe, black jazz Capri or pant for cover-up, tan jazz shoe and/

or lyrical shoe.** COMPANY IS A FULL YEAR COMMITMENT and placement is by invitation only.

INTERMEDIATE JAZZ—This dynamic high-energy class teaches dancers basic vocabulary and style of jazz

movement and technique. Dancers develop rhythm, coordination, and self-expression while developing

muscular strength, flexibility, and proper isolations of the body. Dancers in Intermediate Jazz should also be

enrolled in a ballet technique class. Dancers are required to wear a black leotard; tan tights with jazz short or

leggings; tan jazz shoes. Placement is by teacher recommendation or approval.

ADVANCED JAZZ with LEAPS & TURNS—This dynamic high-energy class teaches dancers the vocabulary and

style of jazz movement and technique. Dancers develop rhythm, coordination, and self-expression while de-

veloping muscular strength, flexibility, and proper isolations of the body. Dancers in Advanced Jazz should

also be enrolled in a ballet technique class. Dancers may wear any leotard color desired; tan tights with jazz

short or leggings; tan jazz shoes. Placement in this class is by teacher recommendation or approval.

STEPS TO BROADWAY: JAZZ & TAP—This class will focus on the fundamentals of Broadway-style Jazz and

Tap. Each month will focus on a specific choreographer and style—think “Fosse” (“Pajama Game,” “Fosse”);

Robbins (“West Side Story,” “Peter Pan”); Jerry Mitchell (“Hairspray”); and Michael Kidd (“Seven Brides for

Seven Brothers”). Students are required to wear black or teal leotard, jazz pants or jazz shorts with tan tights,

tan tap shoes (junior character style), and tan jazz shoes. For students with dance experience, based on teach-

er approval.

MODERN—Modern classes should wear black or teal leotard (based on class level), black leggings, and are

barefoot. Faculty must approve of student’s enrollment given student’s prior dance experience and training.

HIP HOP 1 – This dynamic high-energy class teaches young students basic vocabulary and style of hip-hop

movement and technique with no suggestive music/movement. Dancers develop rhythm, coordination, and

self-expression while developing muscular strength, flexibility, and proper isolations of the body. This class

enables students to have more freedom of self-expression while utilizing the latest popular Christian Hip Hop

and Pop artists. Students may wear their own style of leotard, t-shirt, legging or pant that one can dance and

stretch in. Students are not allowed to wear shorts without leggings or anything that shows the midsection of

the body. Hip Hop 1 is open to dancers in 3rd Grade and Up. This is an introductory level class, so no dance ex-

perience is required. It is highly suggested that

SPA DANCE TUITION RATES

Dance Class Tuition rates are

calculated based on the number of

minutes per week a student spends in

class. Some Intermediate and Advanced

classes may meet on multiple days during

the week. Be sure to check the calendar or

schedule for details.

A table of rates by class can be found on

the next page. The first installment is paid

at registration. Intermediate & Advanced

Ballet are priced by level, based on the

dancer’s eligibility for pointe classes.

We highly recommend that our dancers

enroll for the full year. A modest discount

is included in the full year tuition price.

The Spring Recital Costume Fee will be

processed separately in January.

MULTI-CLASS DISCOUNT:

SPA DANCE is now offering a multi-class

discount of 10% for tuition on all classes

added after a dancer enrolls in a ballet and

jazz foundation class. The discount will ap-

ply to separate jazz classes, as well as hip

hop, Broadway, Modern, and tap. Please

Join us this Christmas!

Join the combined worship ministries of Second Baptist Church as part of the cast of this dramatic retelling

of the Gospel narrative—from creation to the birth of Jesus Christ– in story, song, and dance. The Light Has

Come is a global project of Second Baptist Church, featuring worship choirs, musicians, and performers from

all six SBC campuses, as well as special guest musical group, Veritas.

SENIOR CAST: Grade 6 — Adult

Members of the Senior Cast will have the

opportunity to be part of our Dance Corps or fill

various acting roles within the production.

Dance experience is preferred, but not required.

INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS To pay by installments when registering online, please complete all of the registration pages and select

“OFFLINE/OTHER” as your payment option. You will then receive an email with a copy of our standard

credit card form to complete and return to Bridget Parker at [email protected].

CHECK/CASH PAYMENT You may also register online and still pay by check. Please complete all of the registration pages and

select OFFLINE/OTHER as your payment option. You will then receive an email with a copy of our pay-

ment form. Please respond to that email with your planned method of payment. Checks should be

made out to SBC SPA – with “SPA Tuition Payment” in the memo line; and mailed c/o Kristen Beadles,

SBC SPA, 6400 Woodway Drive, Houston, 77057. Cash can be mailed to this address.

POLICIES MISSED LESSON POLICY (PRIVATE LESSONS, 2021) It is our expectation that students will attend their lessons as scheduled. If a student is unable to attend a lesson, parents must inform the teacher and a member of the School of Performing Arts staff at least 24 hours in advance to qualify as an excused absence. This should be done through the fastest means possible, whether that is email or text message. Teach-ers will extend the same courtesy if they cancel a lesson.

Two make-up lessons will be given for each semester, and those will be arranged according to the teacher’s schedule. Both make-up lessons should be completed before the beginning of the next semester unless the student has registered for the full year of lessons. Extenuating circumstances may be considered, but must be approved by the individual teacher and the Director of the School of Performing Arts. Refunds will not be offered for excessive student absences. If teachers are forced to cancel lessons, make-ups will be of-fered according to the teacher’s schedule. Students will be required to make payment for lessons that:

1. They attend. 2. Are unexcused. 3. Are make-up lessons from an excused absence. 4. Are in excess of the two excused absences that can be made up.

If a teacher is not informed that a student will miss his or her lesson, it will be counted as an unexcused ab-sence and will NOT be made up.

MISSED LESSON POLICY (CLASSES, 2021) Due to the nature of the class environment, there will be no make-ups offered for missed classes. If teach-ers are unable to teach a particular class and are unable to find a substitute for the regular class time, a make-up class will be offered according to the teacher’s schedule. Class absences may affect placement in dance choreography and musical theatre casting.

STUDENT ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL Parents or guardians are responsible for walking students in Grades 4 and under to individual lessons or clas-ses. A parent or guardian must be present at the lesson or class room to pick up these students at the end of the lesson or class. This is a Second Baptist Church policy. Students in Grades 5 and up are dismissed to meet parents on their own. Students should not be left waiting for parents after lessons or classes.

REFUND POLICY The $10 semester registration fee is non-refundable. Once lessons or classes have begun, a refund of payments made cannot be given and the lessons that have not been taken must be paid for. In signing up for lessons for the semester, there is a commitment both from the student and the teacher which must be honored. If a student must terminate lessons before the end of a semester, extenuating circumstances may be considered, but ultimately the decision will be made by the Director of the School of Performing Arts.

MATERIALS/CURRICULUM All additional materials expenses are determined by teachers and our administration. We work to keep these expenses to a minimum. Private Lessons: Students will be expected to provide personal instruments, accessories, and litera-ture as required by their teacher. Teachers will inform students of any particular method books, musical pieces, etc., they will need, and it is the responsibility of the student to purchase these materials in a timely manner. Pianos are available for students to play during their lesson time, but piano students are expected to have an appropriate practice piano or keyboard for individual practice during the week. Musical Theatre: Students may be required to purchase dance shoes and/or specific costume pieces or performance necessities each semester. Dance: Dancers will be required to purchase dancewear, spring recital costumes, and accessories.

RECITALS/PERFORMANCES Each student taking private lessons through the School of Performing Arts will be highly encouraged

to perform in the semester recitals and/or showcases, as well as in any other arranged performances. These opportunities are designed to be low-pressure, positive environments to learn performance skills and are an invaluable part of the students’ study. If you have any questions, please feel free to discuss these with your assigned teacher or with the School of Performing Arts staff. It is expected that all dance and musical theatre students will participate in end of semester show-cases or productions.
