Student Absences and Truancy Policies

Student Absences and Truancy NRS 392.130 provides for, among other items, the following:

1. Excused/Approved Absence - If an emergency exists or if the pupil is physically or mentally unable to attend school,

the parent of the pupil shall notify the teacher or principal of the school within three days after the pupil returns to

school in order for the absence to be considered excused.

2. Unexcused/Unapproved Absence - An absence that has not been approved shall be deemed an unapproved absence.

In the case of an unapproved absence a notice of truancy will be delivered to the parent of the child.

3. A pupil shall be deemed a truant who is absent from school one or more class periods or the equivalent of one or more

class periods without the written approval of his teacher or the principal of the school unless the pupil is mentally or

physically unable to attend school.

Below are the steps to be taken by school administration to notify parents/guardians of their child’s attendance.

1. Parent or Guardian will be sent a letter after three unexcused tardies/absences.

2. Parent or Guardian will be called after four unexcused tardies/absences.

3. A required parent conference request will be made for a meeting with parent/guardian, principal and student after

five unexcused tardies/absences.

4. Any additional unexcused tardy/absences may result in a required parent conference regarding proper placement

for the student child attending his/her home school.

Absences that are unapproved or unexcused are considered truancies. 100 Academy of Excellence will work with parents

and students to identify and remediate the causes of poor attendance.

ARRIVAL: Students are expected to be in attendance every day. Regular school attendance teaches responsibility and

establishes a daily routine for students. It is equally important that students report to school on time. There is no

supervision before 8:30 AM for students who are not enrolled in safekey before school care program. All students

dropped off before 8:30 AM will be placed in safekey and charged the daily rate. In addition, if the problem persists, a

mandatory conference will be scheduled between the parents and school administration.

TARDY POLICY: Tardy Passes will be issued after 9:00 AM. A student that enters a classroom with a late pass is

considered tardy. If a student has a scheduled Doctor’s appointment, the parent is required to present a note from the

physician to the main office upon arrival to be considered excused:

Every three unexcused tardies will equal one unexcused absence.

Upon the 3rd unexcused tardy or absence in one grading period, the parent(s) will be notified via letter.

Upon the 4th unexcused tardy or absence in a grading period, the parent will be contacted via telephone and/or Infinite

Campus. Please see absences and truancy policy below.

Upon the 5th unexcused tardy or absence in a grading period, it will result in a Required Parent Conference (RPC).

Page 7: 2021-2022 Enrollment Packet - 100academy.org

Student Absences and Truancy Policies

ABSENCES: Anytime a student returns to school after an absence, a note signed by a parent or guardian MUST be brought

from home the same day the student returns, but no later than three days after the students return to school. Acceptable

excuses for student absences are illness, a death in the family, a school-sponsored event or activity that has been previously

approved or religious holiday.

Students who have excused absences will be permitted to make-up any missed assignments. The student will have (2) days

to make up work for each excused absence. It is the students and parent’s responsibility to make all necessary arrangements

for homework. No late make up homework will be accepted. If the absence is unexcused, the issue will be handled on a

case by case basis.

Illness: The importance of regular attendance cannot be over emphasized, but students should not be sent to school when

they are ill. If a student becomes ill during the school day and it appears that they would be best cared for at home, the

parent will be contacted. The school will not permit students who are sick to remain in school. School personnel must be

notified of any student’s chronic illness (i.e. asthma, diabetes, heart conditions or seizures). This heightens awareness in

case of an emergency.

EARLY DISMISSAL: If your child will need to be dismissed prior to the end of the school day, we ask that you come to

the front office and sign him/her out with a school employee. The office will send for your child. The Front Office doors

will be locked Monday through Friday from 2:30 PM until 3:15 PM for pick-up, students will not be released after 2:30

PM, and 1:00 PM respectively, unless it is an emergency or prior approval has been granted.

Only individuals listed on the EMERGENCY CONTACT FORM will be allowed to pick-up students from the school

during the school day. A valid picture ID will be required of all individuals picking-up students. If someone arrives at

the school to seek the release of a student and the person's name is not on the emergency contact card and the person

does not have valid photo identification, the student will not be released. No student will be dismissed early after

2:30 PM. Additionally, early dismissal after a field trip is not permitted.

DISMISSAL: Parents must pick up students promptly at 3:30 PM Parents should review the school calendar, and the

monthly/weekly bulletins to remain current of any changes. All students who walk home or go to the Pearson Center must

leave the school grounds immediately after dismissal. Parents/guardians must pick-up their children in the parent pick-up

area of the school. Teachers will bring the students to the designated area for pick-up. Students who are not picked-up

by their parents at the designated time will be placed in the after school care program and parents will be charged

the daily rate. If this becomes a serious problem Child Protective Services (CPS) will be contacted.

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION CODE OF HONOR

There is a clear expectation that all students will perform academic tasks with honor and integrity, with the support of parents, staff, faculty, administration, and the community. The learning process requires students to think, process, organize and create their own ideas. Throughout this process, students gain knowledge, self-respect, and ownership in the work that they do. These qualities provide a solid foundation for life skills, impacting people positively throughout their lives. Cheating and plagiarism violate the fundamental learning process and compromise personal integrity and one’s honor. Students demonstrate academic honesty and integrity by not cheating, plagiarizing or using information unethically in any way.

What is cheating? Cheating or academic dishonesty can take many forms, but always involves the improper taking of information from and/or giving of information to another student, individual, or other source. Examples of cheating can include, but are not limited to:

Taking or copying answers on an examination or any other assignment from another student or other source Giving answers on an examination or any other assignment to another student Copying assignments that are turned in as original work Collaborating on exams, assignments, papers, and/or projects without specific teacher permission Allowing others to do the research or writing for an assigned paper Using unauthorized electronic devices Falsifying data or lab results, including changing grades electronically

What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is a common form of cheating or academic dishonesty in the school setting. It is representing another person’s works or ideas as your own without giving credit to the proper source and submitting it for any purpose. Examples of plagiarism can include, but are not limited to:

Submitting someone else’s work, such as published sources in part or whole, as your own without giving credit to the source Turning in purchased papers or papers from the Internet written by someone else Representing another person’s artistic or scholarly works such as musical compositions, computer programs, photographs, drawings, or paintings as your own Helping others plagiarize by giving them your work

All stakeholders have a responsibility in maintaining academic honesty. Educators must provide the tools and teach the concepts that afford students the knowledge to understand the characteristics of cheating and plagiarism. Parents must support their students in making good decisions relative to completing coursework assignments and taking exams. Students must produce work that is theirs alone, recognizing the importance of thinking for themselves and learning independently, when that is the nature of the assignment. Adhering to the Code of Honor for the purposes of academic honesty promotes an essential skill that goes beyond the school environment. Honesty and integrity are useful and valuable traits impacting one’s life.
