OCTOBER 297PM

QUARTETO NUEVOQUARTETO NUEVOQuarteto Nuevo is a world chamber music group that merges western classical, eastern European folk, Latin, and jazz with an organic feel that packs a wallop! The ensemble’s razor sharp precision is enhanced by its jazzy interludes, lightly rumbling percussion motifs, and difficult to navigate time signatures. They effectively meld the music of ancient worlds and faraway places with a contemporary groove.

Their unique instrumentation – soprano saxophone (Damon Zick), cello (Jacob Szekely), guitar (Kenton Youngstrom) and hand percussion (Felipe Fraga) – richly colors their wide-ranging repertoire, from Erik Satie’s “Pieces Froides” and Chick Corea’s “Tales of the Black Forest” to Traditional Macedonian “Gadjarsko” and original works “Hector, Desmond and Titus”, “Rain Song”, and “Dizer O Que”.

Beth Lederman is well-known for her sophisticated jazz and rhythmic Brazilian

and Latin-jazz piano styles, not only in the Phoenix area, but throughout the

Western U.S. from Canada to Mexico. She has been playing professionally for

more than twenty years, leading several bands and playing with such well-

known names as The Diamonds, Bobbie Vinton, and The Drifters, as well as

with local artists such as Dave Cook, Pete Pancrazi, Alice Tatum, Dennis

Rowland, Renee Patrick, Paul McDermand, and her own groups, Jazz Con

Alma and Novo Mundo.

Her music is melodic, fun, fluid, passionate, innovative, heartfelt, rhythmic,

eclectic, honest, artistic, humorous, spontaneous…and great!

Randy Riggle is a nationally touring stand-up comedian and has opened for such acts as Bob Dylan, Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Red Skelton, and Jerry Lewis.

Long before computers, answering machines, and cell phones, there was a time that was part of all of us. Instead of drive-thrus there were drive-ins. Coke wasn’t “Classic”, and it came from a fountain or its

green glass bottle. The only survivor series on TV consisted of Gilligan and his crew.

Times have changed, but have we? Do you still remember the first record you owned? How about sitting around the radio instead of the television? EVERY night was a classic car cruise! Was it really that long ago?

The nationally touring production of NOSTALGIA takes you down memory lane with your ‘57 Chevy as we remember the times and people who changed our lives in the 1950’s and 60’s. Nationally touring stand-up comedian Randy Riggle will be your tour guide on a trip filled with songs and laughs in this unique one-man show.

Alfredo was born in Cuba. When he was eleven years old, he immigrated with his family to Venezuela. Four years later, he began studying the Venezuelan folk harp with his school friend Fernando Guerrero. A year later, he became a pupil of Alberto Romero on the Paraguayan harp. Just two years after his first harp lesson, he began medical school at Universidad de Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia, and began performing professionally and recorded his first album. Music supported his medical studies until graduation. Five years later, he moved to the United States to continue studies of Music Therapy. Two years later, he married Luz Marina Otero. For eight years, from the time of his graduation from medical school, he worked in the medical field as well as a harpist and recording artist until his wife became pregnant. In order to have time for his growing family, he then decided to dedicate his life only to them and to his first love, the harp. With a multicultural repertoire that covers folk, classical, and popular music from many countries, as well as his original compositions, Alfredo has performed for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. He has recorded many albums and is the winner of a Gold Record in South America. He has lectured on a variety of subjects at universities, colleges, and schools; is the author of several harp music books and articles; and his compositions have been performed and recorded by classical and folk harpists in many countries. His “Venezolana for Five Pedal Harps” has become a favorite of harp ensembles around the world.

Celtic Yuletide is a heartwarming live show that will have the audience singing, clapping and tapping its feet. The live show is a wonderful blend of the old and the new. Holiday classics, traditional Irish carols, lively dance music, and heart-wrenching slow airs sweep the listener away to Ireland at Christmastime. The Houston Chronicle calls Michael’s voice “clear as a crystalline stream” whether performing traditional Irish carols such as “Winter, Fire and Snow” and “The Wexford Carol”, Gaelic versions of Christmas songs “Oiche Ciuin” (Silent Night), or timeless Holiday favorites “The First Noel” and “O Come All Ye Faithful” the tenor’s stellar voice is certain to enthrall.

Yakov Smirnoff is a legend in American comedy. After escaping communist Soviet Russia in the 1970’s, he came to this country with nothing but a dream. Not even knowing the language, Yakov humbly began working as a bartender at the famous Grossinger’s Catskill Resort in New York where he was able to tell jokes each night after his shifts. As his English improved, he quickly grew in popularity. He would then make the move to Los Angeles where the owner of The Comedy Store, Mitzi Shore, took him under her wing.

His lovable view of life through the eyes of a poor immigrant captured the hearts of America. He soared to the top of the comedy world performing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and countless other television programs, including as a regular character on Night Court, and the star of his very own show, named after his famous catch-phrase, What a Country! He branched out to the big screen where he starred in movies with Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, and Jack Nicholson, to name a few.

Yakov Smirnoff is an iconic comedian, movie star, best-selling author, and most recently, he has earned a Doctorate Degree in Leadership from Pepperdine University. Living a life that’s as exciting as ever, Yakov has married his sweetheart, is currently touring the world doing stand-up, and even has his very own theater in Branson, Missouri. With the heart of a dreamer, Yakov Smirnoff has made the impossible possible and continues to inspire others with his message that America is still “What a Country!” Keep an eye out for his brand-new podcast on ABC radio, look for him at a theater near you, and stay tuned for what Dr. Yakov does next!

Maxine Linehan, an Irish native, is an international concert and recording artist who has been heralded by the New York Times as “fiercely talented”! Ms. Linehan has performed for thousands of fans at some of the world’s most prestigious and intimate venues. From the iconic Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris to New York’s Lincoln Center and The Town Hall, to Feinstein’s/54 Below, and Birdland, Linehan’s enormous vocal strength, combined with her ability to emotionally engage with her audience, is unparalleled. Linehan’s celebrated studio album Beautiful Songs, was a top ten pick by USA Today, and in 2017 she will release the highly anticipated live recording of her 2016 performance of What Would Petula Do? at Théâtre du Châtelet. She also recorded a cover of U2’s smash hit single “One”, all music available on iTunes. Adding to her credits, Linehan became a YouTube sensation in the fall of 2015 with a tribute to Daniel Murphy of the World Series-bound New York Mets performed to the tune of the Irish classic “Danny Boy.” Linehan studied at The Inns of Court School of Law in London, The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and is a member of Actors’ Equity.

Katherine Byrnes, an award-winning singer / producer presents Piece of My Heart, her loving concert tribute to Janis Joplin and the musical zeitgeist of the psychedelic sixties. Many tribute shows aim to recreate in detail the recordings of our favorite performers, but Katherine and her band instead aim to recreate the spontaneity and vitality of the era, bringing their own voice and interpretation to iconic songs like “Me and Bobby McGee”, “Tell Mama”, and of course “Piece of My Heart”, as well as songs by Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Band, and more. They bring a refreshing energy and presence to the tribute genre.

Katherine Byrnes is a vocalist, educator, and concert producer based in Tucson, AZ. She is the sell-out headliner and co-creator of Tapestry: The Album, a show honoring Carole King’s landmark album. She toured China as the featured vocalist for Art.if.act Dance Project’s Great American Dance Tour, and all across Europe and the US as a harmony singer with Blue Note recording artist Amos Lee. She has sung with acts as diverse as the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Arizona legends Calexico, and cumbia sensation Orkesta Mendoza, and has released an album of jazz standards with famed pianist / arranger Jeffrey Haskell. She is an annual guest performer for Invisible Theatre’s Sizzling Summer Sounds series, and is the production manager of The Gaslight Theatre, where she also writes the musical review concerts.

Andy Hersey is an Arizona based singer/songwriter who released his third full-length album Tell Me All About It in 2016 on Reposado Recordings. Songwriting has always been a part of Hersey’s life while working other trades: ranch hand, horseshoer, truck-driver, construction, and raising a family on Southern Arizona ranches. He now makes his living playing steady shows in Tucson area establishments and a road trip now and then.

His set of songs is acoustic based and eclectic. Country rock, silly drinking songs, a love song or two, mix in a bit of broken Spanglish, and there you have it, says Hersey. The goal is to have friends rather than fans and to make music a living without being in the music industry. Andy and his wife Holly now live in Southern Arizona.

Spinphony is a crossover string quartet. Mixing and mashing catchy melodies into unique arrangements and original compositions, such as “Bach in Black” and “Don’t Stop Beethoven”, Spinphony is more like a rock band than a string quartet with added choreography and beats. The four virtuosic ladies are breaking down barriers between classical, rock, and pop music, while winning over audiences with their unique and high energy performances.

The quartet is comprised of Brett Omara and Anna Morris on violin, Michaela Borth on 5 string, and Kari Clifton on cello. Combined, the ladies have been playing their instruments for over 100 years. Spinphony has performed at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, A Taste of Colorado, Crested Butte Music Festival, Denver Museum of Art Final Fridays, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Lonetree Arts Center, Lakewood Cultural Center, Dairy Center, to name a few. They have collaborated with the Pueblo Symphony, Frequent Flyers, 2 Cellos, Evanescense, Il Volo, Josh Groban, and more.

Kimberly Faye Greenberg portrayed Fanny Brice on Broadway, in Speakeasy Dollhouse: Ziegfeld Midnight Frolic at the Liberty Theatre, Broadway’s only hidden theatre. Her Fanny Brice portrayal also continues as part of the Broadway-bound musical Ghostlight, by Matthew Martin and Tim Realbuto, a role she originated during its run in the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) at the Signature Theatre in 2011, and subsequent workshops and readings as the show aims for Broadway.

Quickly becoming the go-to gal for Fanny, Kimberly is sought out for her in-depth Brice perspective, as well as subsequent knowledge of the theatre scene in the early 20th century, with interviews and articles published in various circuits including the vintage nouveau Zelda Magazine, Fox 5 New York, Newsday, and teaching masterclasses based on the beginnings of Broadway.

Chris Mann is no stranger to the spotlight. His debut album Roads (Universal/Republic Records) hit #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart and appeared on the Billboard Top 200 and iTunes charts. His sophomore release, Constellation, followed suit, also topping the Billboard and iTunes charts. As one of the most sought-after talents in music, television, and on stage, Mann was personally cast by Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber as The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera’s 25th Anniversary Tour. Mann donned the iconic mask for over 700 performances with critics hailing him as “the best Phantom since Michael Crawford.”

Tango music by Astor Piazzolla, Raul Jaurena, and Traditional Tango

“Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.” ~ Plato

Tango Nuevo features musical selections from the traditional tango of Toto Damario and Mariano Mores, to the seductive rhythms of Astor Piazzolla’s beloved masterworks. Camarada has selected a delicious variety of tango styles for this program of Tango Nuevo – dark and sultry with driving tempos to sunny and syncopated. We are thrilled to present several Camarada commissions of traditional tango and Astor Piazzolla compositions arranged by Grammy award-winning tango master Raul Jaurena.

Imagine yourself in the idyllic French countryside

in the 1930's. Sometime before dark, a gypsy

caravan sets up camp in a field outside of town,

luring the locals out for an evening’s fun. The

wanderers travel with a film projector, pointing

it at the side of a barn. As the images flicker to

life beneath the stars, gypsy musicians play

their guitars and fiddles, matching every movement on the screen with

characteristic virtuosity, passion, and humor. Reviving this lost entertainment,

The Hot Club of San Francisco presents Cinema Vivant, an evening of vintage

silent films accompanied by live gypsy swing.

Tara Vaughan is a bona-fide superstar. Her soulful vocals and piano techniques are reminiscent of a bygone era, but still have a unique and modern sensibility. In her vocal style, you can hear echoes and influence of legends like Patsy Cline and Sam Cooke. Her abilities on the piano are strongly influenced by rock icons like Carole King and Elton John.

SHE ROCKS celebrates women artists and songwriters of the 1960’s – 1980’s, woven together with songs and stories. Backed by an all-star band, Tara performs music from artists like Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Blondie, Heart, and many more. In this unique review, Tara Vaughan masterfully presents an evening of classic rock and roll with the focus on female artists and songwriters.

A graduate of Tufts University, Tara Vaughan is a singer-songwriter who has independently released 3 albums, the most recent of which, Dandelion Wine, was nominated for several Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards.

JAMES GARNER’STRIBUTE TO

JOHNNY CASH

James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the life and music of the

legendary ‘Man in Black’ with strong conviction and stunning accuracy. Garner

and his band faithfully recreate Cash’s biggest hits, including stories and

personal anecdotes about America’s most beloved singing storyteller. A fun,

toe-tapping trip down memory lane honoring Johnny Cash’s life and music, and

the boom-chicka-boom sound of his longtime backing band, the Tennessee Three.

Since 2008, Garner and his band have toured across the country, honoring

Johnny Cash and his musical legacy. A special show at Folsom State Prison in

2008 commemorated the 40th anniversary of Cash’s infamous live album

recorded behind prison walls. The band returned to Folsom, California in

January 2018 on the 50th anniversary of the prison concert, performing two

sold-out shows at the Harris Center for the Arts, with guest artists Tara Cash,

along with reporter Gene Beley and photographer Dan Poush, who had been

at the prison to cover the original concert. For a commemoration of a different

nature, Garner and the band performed at the U.S. Post Office in Claremont,

California at the official unveiling of the Johnny Cash stamp in June, 2013. The

closest experience to seeing Johnny Cash in person today. Don’t miss it!

Volunteer & Share Your Passion for the Arts!

Each GVR Live! Season brings an exciting array of live entertainers and performers to Southern Arizona to entertain us and enrich lives in the community! If you share our passion for the arts and are a current GVR Member, we invite you to serve as an Arts & Entertainment Volunteer.

Our Volunteers assist us during performances by greeting and seating patrons, helping with merchandise and concession sales, and providing general assistance to guests. No experience is necessary as we will train you. The only requirements are a willingness to learn and to ensure our guests have a pleasurable experience while attending GVR’s performances. Volunteers also have opportunities to help at the GVR movies and dances!

Those interested in becoming an Arts & Entertainment Volunteer may send an email stating interest to: [email protected]
