Rationale Galston High School is focused on raising the academic outcomes and standards for students and preparing them for the challenges and rigours of Higher School Certificate (HSC) study in the senior school. The Junior Assessment and Homework Policy provides a framework for students, parents and staff to assist in the effective delivery and completion of assessable tasks and homework to a high standard.
Grades and General performance descriptors Grades are awarded for all assessment tasks using the New South Wales Educational Standards Association (NESA) General performance descriptors.
The general performance descriptors describe performance at each of five grade levels.
A
The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations.
B
The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations.
C
The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills.
D
The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills.
E
The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the content and has achieved very limited competence in some of the processes and skills.
http://arc.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/go/sc/sc-grading/cpds/ Assessment Tasks Assessment Tasks include examinations, assignments and practical demonstrations. They are used to develop and assess a student’s knowledge of content covered in timetabled lessons. Aims and Purpose of Assessment Assessment is the process of identifying, gathering and interpreting information about a student’s learning in relation to the objectives and outcomes of a course. The central purpose of assessment is to provide information on student achievement and progress and set direction for ongoing teaching and learning. The assessment program incorporates the principles of assessment for learning, assessment of learning and assessment as learning. • Assessment for learning involves teachers using evidence about students’ achievement to
inform future teaching. • Assessment of learning is an assessment of what the student has learnt and usually occurs
at key points in a unit, term or semester and may be used to rank or grade students. • Assessment as learning occurs when students monitor their own learning, ask questions
and use a range of strategies to decide what they know and can do, and how to use assessment for new learning. Assessment as learning encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning.
Page | 4
Notice of assessment All subjects will provide students with an Assessment Schedule at the beginning of the course. The Assessment Schedule outlines the number of tasks, names of tasks and dates for submission/completion of tasks. Submission of Assessment Tasks Unless notified explicitly in the official assessment task notice for that particular task, all assessments tasks must be submitted by 8.50am on the due date, in written hard copy or electronic form, (as stated on the instructions in the assessment task notification) regardless of whether a timetabled lesson for that subject has been set on that day. Students will be required to sign an assessment task notification sheet (see Appendix 6) when:
• Receiving a task • Submitting their task • Receiving their feedback
Specifically, students must:
• Personally deliver assessment tasks to the relevant teacher or delegate before 8.50am on or before the due date – not left at staffrooms or in classrooms or anywhere else.
• Preferably present a doctor’s certificate, or alternatively a note from home if the student is absent on the day a task is due accompanied by the ‘Explanation of absence from an assessment task form’ (see Appendix 3).
• Attend classes ALL DAY on days with scheduled assessment tasks. Students who arrive significantly late to school or take a morning off to prepare for a mid morning or afternoon assessment task will be awarded a zero mark for the task.
• Where a task requires an oral presentation, all students must be prepared to present the task on the due date, regardless of whether the oral presentations are completed in one lesson or a series of lessons.
No extensions will be granted if a student claims on the day a task is due that they are unable to submit or complete a task because “the computer broke down”, “the printer won’t work”, or other similar excuse. The malfunction or unavailability of computing equipment cannot be used as a legitimate excuse for the late submission of work. To overcome possible problems, students are encouraged to:
• start assignments early • submit draft copies of tasks to the teacher before the due date • back up electronic/digital files to more than one source including a cloud based source
such as google apps available through the student portal. • make and keep printouts of their work during the process of completing the assignment as
evidence of what they have completed • keep an up-to-date diary and/or log book (including problems experienced) as required in
subjects such as design and technology, visual arts and computing subjects • be prepared to use non-computing methods if all else fails.
Practical Task – Assessments in class Subjects that have a practical component, students are required to attend the lesson for the practical assessment component. Students absent on the day must provide adequate documentation to support their absence. If the teacher is agreeable to the reason for the absence, one more date will be scheduled for the completion of the task. If the student is absent again, they will receive an average mark based on the work they have completed in the semester. No other opportunities will be provided for students to sit the practical component of the assessment after two (2) opportunities have been provided. nuIllness and Misadventure Appeals
Page | 5
Throughout the year a student may experience difficulty attending school for an assessment task; completing an Assessment Task by the due date; or their performance in an Assessment Task may be affected by illness or misadventure. The school has a process to support these students. A student may submit an Illness and Misadventure Form (See Appendix 4) if they are affected by:
o Illness – either personal or the illness of a family member o Bereavement o Sporting representation – for school approved activities o School Excursions o Other – events that have adversely affect a student’s completion or performance in a
task that are worthy of consideration. Students are required to support their application with relevant and appropriate documentation. Depending on the nature of their illness or misadventure, this may include:
o Medical Certificate o Funeral Notice o Statutory Declaration o School representation Note o Sport representation Note
Assignments and Homework One of the conditions of completing a course satisfactorily is that the student must apply themselves with diligence and sustained effort to the set tasks and experiences provided in the course by the school. This includes not only assessment tasks, but also assignments and homework. Class work and assignment work may also be based on mandatory experiences as described by the syllabus for that course and as such it is a requirement of the RoSA that students have a satisfactory attendance record and the complete all set class work and homework. Unsatisfactory Attendance and Progress Poor attendance and unsatisfactory progress are closely linked. Attendance in each course needs to meet satisfactory levels in order to complete sufficient course outcomes. Where attendance and/or course outcome completion are of concern the student will be notified in writing with an ‘Unsatisfactory Academic Performance’ Warning Letter that they are jeopardising their achievement due to non-attendance in class and / or non-completion of work missed due to absence. Ongoing poor attendance at school, which results in non-completion of class work, means that course outcomes are not being met. Assessment Task Template All Assessment Tasks issued at Galston High School use a common Assessment Task Template (see Appendix 2). The Assessment Task provides students with all of the information they need to complete the task including the task weighting, due date, a description of the task, an assessment criteria, the syllabus outcomes assessed, submission instructions, and the marking guideline the teacher will use to assess the completed task. Students are also required to sign that the work they are submitting is their own and is not plagiarised. Plagiarism
Page | 6
Plagiarism in assessment tasks occurs when students use someone else’s work and claim it as their own. Examples include:
o Using another student’s work or ideas o Copying text or images directly from a book or the internet o Copying text or images directly from a book or the internet and making limited
changes Process for student plagiarism Plagiarism when completing Assessment Tasks will result in:
• zero marks • the student being referred to the Head Teacher for counselling regarding academic
responsibility when completing tasks • a letter issued to parents / carers notifying of ‘Unsatisfactory Academic
Performance’ regarding the student’s plagiarism • the student will need to complete and resubmit all parts of the task where plagiarism
is identified. Student Concerns Regarding Assessment Procedures The information set out in this booklet is provided as a guide. Individual class teachers will provide specific details and dates for the assessment programs in each subject. Students are encouraged to discuss the assessment procedures with their class teacher and/or the Head Teacher concerned. Any concerns about marks awarded for any individual tasks are to be made directly to the teacher concerned at the time the mark is given. Unresolved problems may be dealt with by the Head Teacher responsible for the subject in consultation with the Assessment Registrar (Mrs Andrus). Homework Principles Galston High School is NOT a homework free zone. Galston High School supports homework and recognises the role homework and assignments play in the learning process. Teachers, students and parents/carers should be aware of their responsibilities in relation to homework as outlined in this policy.
Definition Homework includes set assignments or tasks, completion of unfinished class work, performance practice, reading prescribed texts, working on major projects, practical works or revision of the day’s work. Study vs Homework The general purpose of homework assignments is to reinforce the knowledge that you learn in the classroom. These assignments allow for extra practice, so that you can refine your skills and knowledge in a particular area.
Studying, on the other hand, refers to the time students spend on their own to go over material they learned in class. Many students think of studying as what they do to prepare for an exam; however, it is best to set aside regular time to study to be sure you understand all the concepts you are learning in class so you do not fall behind. Studying includes making flashcards, taking detailed notes, making outlines, and reading.
Types of homework activities: o Working on an assessment task o Working on a homework task o Preparing for an exam o Reading a novel o Mathspace activities o Revising/reading over/summarising the day’s
notes
o Word Flyer activities o Revising spelling o EDROLO o DuoLingo activities
Page | 7
Undertaking homework enables students to: o Manage workload o Overcome procrastination o Develop resilience o Set goals o Manage stress o Strike a balance between, homework, leisure and family responsibilities
Recommended time for homework An example / guideline suggestion - Ten minutes for every school year per night: -
o Year 7 70 minutes o Year 8 80 minutes o Year 9 90 minutes o Year 10 100 minutes o Year 11 110 minutes o Year 12 120 minutes
Teachers Homework will be educationally beneficial and meet the realistic expectations of students, teachers, parents and caregivers. Homework should be a purposeful learning experience which consolidates and/ or enriches the curriculum.
o Teachers will set work for home study. This provides opportunities for consolidation, practice, reflection, revision, research, writing, investigating, reading and enrichment and extension activities.
o Teachers will give clear guidelines on what is expected in terms of purpose, time allocation, processes, product and marking criteria
o Teachers will keep records of work completed. o Teachers will notify parents if homework/assignments are repeatedly unsatisfactory or
not completed.
Students Students have a responsibility to complete homework as part of their course work and to apply themselves with diligence and sustained effort to the set tasks and experiences provided in the course by the school. Homework assists students to develop independent study and time management skills.
Homework for students in the Hub Parents / care providers with students enrolled in the Hub, will be advised by their class teacher of homework requirements for students in Hub Lessons. Homework goals and expectations will also be negotiated at Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
Students from the Hub participating in mainstream classes will be required to meet the homework and assessment requirements of the mainstream class teachers.
School Diaries All students are issued with a school diary at the beginning of the school year. Students are expected to use their diary to keep a record of all homework / assessments given in lessons to help them plan their workload and submit tasks at the specified due date. Parents and Caregivers and Homework The following tips were provided by the Department of Education Homework Policy to enable parents and caregivers in the supervision of their children’s homework. o Take an interest in your child’s homework o Support your child to set time aside each day (for homework) o Provide a dedicated place for homework and study if possible o Assist teachers to monitor homework by signing completed work if requested, and be
Page | 8
aware of the amount of homework set o Communicate with teachers any concerns about the nature of homework or your child's
approach to homework o Encourage your children to read and take an interest in current events o Alert the school to any domestic circumstances or extra-curricular activities which may
need to be taken into consideration when homework is being set or marked The Homework Environment To effectively complete homework and study, students require a dedicated area within the home. This area must be quiet, comfortable and free from distraction and give students access to materials that they may need including stationery, textbooks and a dictionary.
Access to a computer and the internet is highly desirable, however, this is not essential. Access to Technology Whilst most students have access to computers and the internet at home, those who are not able to use this technology will not be disadvantaged when completing homework and assignments. Students are able to access computers, the internet and printing facilities in the school library before school, at recess and lunch. If students or parents have concerns about the requirements of a particular task, please contact your child’s teacher. 30/30 Literacy@home

Examinations and Formal Assessments Examinations (exams) and Formal Assessments are used to assess student knowledge. Examinations may be written or verbal and vary in the length of time. Formal assessments may include a presentation, speech or practical demonstration. These forms of assessment may be conducted throughout the year, from in-class topic tests to more formal Yearly Examinations at Galston High School. Rules for Junior Examinations Timetables for the formal yearly examinations are communicated to students, parents and carers in the last week of term 3 Examination procedures will be reviewed in weeks 1 and 2 of term 4 with students and communicated to parents / carers at this time too.
RoSA The RoSA is a cumulative credential for students. All students in Years 7-10 are working towards the completion of their RoSA. The RoSA lists all mandatory and additional Stage 4 and 5 courses and, where applicable, Stage 6 courses completed by the student, along with the grade awarded. The RoSA credential also lists any courses commenced but not completed and the date of leaving school. NESA issues the formal RoSA credential to students who satisfy the eligibility requirements when they leave school (see Appendix 1) School leavers who are not eligible for the RoSA will receive a Transcript of Study.
