2020 Virtual Neurological Surgery, P.C. Health Science Competition Submission Guide Projects must follow these instructions with no exceptions. We will be using Google Sites and Google Drive. These two services require a free Google account. Students can use the accounts of their parents or teachers and one account can host many sites. School Google accounts may have restrictions on sharing content over the web and SHOULD NOT BE USED. Each project will be allowed to have a onepage Google Site that is formatted like this example: https://sites.google.com/view/nspchsctest/home Each Team has the option to submit one of the following: a digital poster OR a traditional poster board OR a slideshow presentation of 20 slides or less If you made a digitally printed poster, then you can save the file as a PDF for upload. These files are sometimes quite large, so keep that in mind when you get to the upload step below. If your digital poster scrolls rather than zooms, that is okay as long as the text is readable. If you made a traditional science fair board that you cut and pasted onto a board, then you will need to lay the board flat on the ground in a well lighted area and photograph it as best you can without shaking the camera. It may help to turn off the flash if it is reflecting off of glossy prints on the board. Extremely tall boards may need to be photographed twice, one photo for the top half and a second photograph for the bottom half. The photo of the board will then need to be saved as a pdf file in order to make it zoomable on the Google site. Using a Mac: o Open the jpg file with the “Preview” app. o Choose “Export as PDF” from the File menu. Using a PC: o Open the jpg file in the Photos program. o Click the Print button and select “Print”. o Under Printer menu, select “Microsoft Print to PDF. o Select the correct page orientation. o Click “Print” and give the file a name and select where you want to save it to. If you have demo items that go along with your board, you may have up to four separate closeup photos of those items (See example project above). Google Sites allows viewers to zoom in on the pdf files, so please make sure that judges will be able to read all of the text on your board.

Health Science Competition Submission Guide

Projects must follow these instructions with no exceptions.

We will be using Google Sites and Google Drive. These two services require a free Google account. Students can use the accounts of their parents or teachers and one account can host many sites. School Google accounts may have restrictions on sharing content over the web and SHOULD NOT BE USED.

Each project will be allowed to have a one‐page Google Site that is formatted like this example:

https://sites.google.com/view/nspchsctest/home

Each Team has the option to submit one of the following: a digital poster OR a traditional poster board

OR a slideshow presentation of 20 slides or less

If you made a digitally printed poster, then you can save the file as a PDF for upload. These files are

sometimes quite large, so keep that in mind when you get to the upload step below. If your digital

poster scrolls rather than zooms, that is okay as long as the text is readable.

If you made a traditional science fair board that you cut and pasted onto a board, then you will need

to lay the board flat on the ground in a well‐lighted area and photograph it as best you can without

shaking the camera. It may help to turn off the flash if it is reflecting off of glossy prints on the board.

Extremely tall boards may need to be photographed twice, one photo for the top half and a second

photograph for the bottom half.

The photo of the board will then need to be saved as a pdf file in order to make it zoomable on the

Google site.

Using a Mac:

o Open the jpg file with the “Preview” app. o Choose “Export as PDF” from the File menu.

Using a PC:

o Open the jpg file in the Photos program.

o Click the Print button and select “Print”.

o Under Printer menu, select “Microsoft Print to PDF.

o Select the correct page orientation.

o Click “Print” and give the file a name and select where you want to save it to.

If you have demo items that go along with your board, you may have up to four separate close‐up

photos of those items (See example project above).

Google Sites allows viewers to zoom in on the pdf files, so please make sure that judges will be able to

read all of the text on your board.

Here is an outline of what needs to be done: 1. Login to an existing Google account or create a new one.

2. Upload your poster image(s) and forms as pdf files. If you have a power point, upload it to drive as well. If you are using Google Slides, create your slide show.

3. Set the sharing permissions of the files.

4. Make the site.

5. Set the sharing permissions of the site.

6. Send the URL link to your Adult Sponsor, who will then send them to the Administrator

Depending on your technology knowledge and skills, this could take between 30 minutes and several hours. Please contact the administrator if it is taking you longer or you are not sure of what to do.

STEPS 1. Login to an existing Google account or create a new one. Remember, that school google accounts may not let you share with the permissions that we need – so do not use them.

Go to: accounts.google.com and either login to an existing account or click on “Create Account –> For myself”

2. Upload your poster image(s) OR your slide show presentation, your presentation video and your Competition Forms to Google Drive.

Once you have logged in, you should see the app palette in the top right corner of the window.

Click on this waffle grid to show the

palette .

Now, repeat these steps for your video, and then your Forms and Abstract (chose the layout that has the correct number of files i.e. if you are uploading three files total, then chose the three file layout). Drag these blue resizing dots to make the frame fit your image. If using Google Slides, it will automatically fit the slide size. So just make it bigger. If it is a Power Point, it will require a bit more of an adjustment.

If you select the two file format, click the plus button then “From Drive” to select the file you would like in that

location.

Resize the image frame(s):

If you wish to make your project difficult to find, enter a string of random numbers here. If you wish for it to be easily discoverable, enter your project title or something related.

Click Save. You should preview your site prior to submitting to make sure it works like it should. Try this from a different computer or device to make sure that your permissions are done correctly to allow others that are not on your device and account to access everything.

6. Send the URL link your Adult Sponsor. Please note that you may continue to edit the website until the submission deadline even if you have sent the link to your Sponsor, so it is not a bad idea to send it to them as soon as you create the site so it is out of the way!
