CHIGARIRA Tangai Sylvester

PROFILE

Chigarira’s study critically assesses the impact of the fast track land reform on sustainable rural development in Zimbabwe. Despite undertaking such an egalitarian land reform, to date in Southern Africa, the provision of land on its own has been insufficient to address the agrarian question. Therefore, resolving the unfinished land question still remains crucial for sustainable rural development and poverty alleviation in Zimbabwe.

CHIGARIRA Tangai Sylvester

THESIS TITLE: Land Reform and the Challenge of Rural Development in Zimbabwe: The Case of the Fast Track Reform in Mashonaland West Region.

SUPERVISOR: Prof A Rahim

OMONONA Solomon

PROFILE

Solomon Omonona’s study examined the effects of political environment on the financial and non-financial performance of telecommunication organizations in South Africa. His study was an attempt to develop a framework that relates political affiliation, political ideology and political instability with performance of telecommunication organizations in South Africa. Data was collected from Telkom, MTN, Vodacom, Cell C and Virgin mobile through simple probability sampling method. The study found that political affiliation, political ideology and political instability significantly relate to financial and non-financial performance of telecommunication organizations in South Africa. The study, therefore, recommends that the negative interference by the political class should be discouraged and frequent cabinet reshuffle or change in the government should be reduced. The study also recommends that the government should avoid frequent changes in government policies and programmes and ensure consistency and continuity in policies and review these when necessary in collaboration with the private sector.

ADDAI Prince

PROFILE

Prince Addai’s study examined the impact of food insecurity on psychological well-being and its components among pregnant women in Northern Ghana. His study was an attempt to assess the explanatory roles of self-esteem, locus of control, pro-activity, and social support on the relationship between food insecurity and psychological well-being. Data was collected from 384 pregnant women from six hospitals in the Northern Parts of Ghana through a convenience sampling technique. The study noted that food insecurity was negatively significantly related with psychological well-being and all its components among pregnant women. The study also noted that self-esteem and locus of control mediated the relationship between food insecurity and psychological well-being. Proactivity and social support also moderated the nexus between food insecurity and psychological well-being. The study, therefore, recommends that pregnant mothers should be supported and empowered to boost their self-esteem, make them proactive and develop a sense of control with the aim of ameliorating negative consequences of food insecurity on psychological well-being.

THESIS TITLE: Household food insecurity and its association with psychological well-being of pregnant women in Ghana: The role of selected psychosocial factors

NGIRANDE Hlanganipai

PROFILE

Hlanganipai Ngirande’s thesis examined the moderating effect of uncertainty in the relationship between job satisfaction, organizational commitment and occupational stress among academics in merged and unmerged institutions Data was collected through convenience sampling. The study found that the attitudes and job behaviour of those employees who felt certain that they would retain their jobs or obtain other satisfying jobs, were not negatively affected by the merger, whereas attitudes and job behaviour of those employees who felt otherwise were negatively affected. The results also revealed that uncertainty moderates the relationship between the merger status and job satisfaction. The thesis recommended that managers of merged higher education institutions should do their best to dispel job uncertainty among their employees.

MAZINYO Ernesha

PROFILE

Ernesha Webb Mazinyo’s study investigated leadership and management issues within the Eastern Cape district’s health system that impacted on implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI). The study revealed the dearth of published research on leadership and management within the district health system in South Africa, particularly in resource constrained settings like the Eastern Cape. Through the study, leadership and management development interventions designed for frontline managers in the Eastern Cape district health system were piloted. Evaluations indicate the pilots had a positive contribution to the leadership and management capacity of targeted frontline managers. This research contributed to an in-depth and nuanced understanding of the Eastern Cape’s health systems contexts, priorities and opportunities. Recommendations from the research indicate that a stronger focus on district leadership and management must include targeted support to build the capacity of frontline operational managers as key drivers toward readiness for full implementation of NHI.

NOMNGA Vikelwa

PROFILE

Vikelwa Nomnga’s study investigated the implementation of food service management policies in selected restaurants in the Amathole District Municipality (ADM) in six local municipalities. The findings of the study revealed a shortage of skills to effectively interpret the food service policy, and this has a negative impact on public health as it could expose consumers to diseases. The results further revealed lack of regular monitoring of the food service policy by the Health Department. The study, therefore, recommends that ADM ought to enforce the food service management policy, in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Department of Health, to ensure that restaurants adhere to good food practices that simultaneously safeguard the health of consumers.

MAONEKE Pardon Blessings

PROFILE

Pardon Blessings Maoneke’s thesis was passed unconditionally by all three examiners. The study investigated the security and usability of long passwords (passphrases) and compared the results to short passwords. The study applied a pragmatic design science approach in which 224 participants took part in a password experiment. Results showed that users can generate secure and usable multilingual passphrases. None of the multilingual passphrases in this study were guessed compared to 50.4% of the short passwords, using password guessing software (tools). Furthermore, passphrases in this study proved to be stronger than those reported in the literature. In terms of usability, users demonstrated the ability to learn and memorise multilingual passphrases with minimal cognitive load. These findings were used to propose a model for secure and usable passphrases. This study recommends the inclusion of multilingual passphrases for secure and usable authentication in security policies. Four peer-reviewed publications have since emanated from this study.

MBEDZI Edson

PROFILE

Edson Mbedzi’s study investigates different types of lending technologies as conduits of access to credit by small businesses in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The sample included eight financial institutions and 321SMMEs. A combination of logit models and Data Enveloping Analysis was used. The results show that successful funding of SMMEs requires a profile mix based on lender characteristics and technology types. A proposed framework shows that almost 50% of financial support for SMMES should be channelled through microfinance institutions. In addition, SMMEs face extensive discriminatory credit rationing. Firm growth paths vary significantly as a result. The study also found that race significantly affects credit rationing, suggesting that Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) may not have been very successful in redressing imbalances to credit access. Further, interaction effects indicate that venture capital and asset financing are less favourable while statement lending is more favourable for non-white borrowers. The study recommends a financing framework that takes account of profile mix to minimise credit rationing underpinned by historical imbalances. A supplementary funding model is also proposed.
