"This quilt was made with English paper piecing, 'stack and whack' technique, and hand appliqué. I love to work with ombre fabrics and used a fat quarter as the background. "

"Since I only had a fat quarter of background fabric, the piecing of this quilt was a real challenge! I had to cut the borders first and then cut the setting triangles, keeping track of 12 shades of blue. Assembling required paying attention to the subtle lines in the background fabric. "

Blueberries and Cream
Member: Susan Burghart
"For several years, I was a member of a group that met one Friday a month at the Quilt Patch. Each year Leslie Pfeifer challenged us with a new quilting project. One year, each member made a Log Cabin quilt. Each quilter styled their Log Cabin quilt squares as desired. Everyone enjoyed the variety of Log Cabin quilts we created."

Ice Crystals
Member: Judith Cosgriff
"This quilt was made in response to a mystery block challenge by National Quilters Circle. The paper pieced 'crystals' were designed by Toby Lischko. The curvy border was made using a ruler designed by Cheryl Lynch. I love how the Kaffe Fassett fabric used here and there brightened up the quilt and made the crystals pop."

Member: Judith Cosgriff
"This quilt was part of the Summer 2019 Kaffetastic Quilt Along. Fabric was doled out, one packet per week, for six weeks. I got nervous when I saw how busy the fabrics were, but I love the finished product and am now a big fan of Kaffe Fassett fabrics, so colorful and bold!"

"This quilt was made in the Fall of 2015, early in my quilting journey. It started as an experiment in learning new techniques. It turned out to be a treasured collection of memories of delightful travel experiences, from NY to SC, combined with the adventures of finding new quilt shops on the way. "

Remember the 30's Bee
Member: Dottie Dane
"Lovers of 30s Reproduction Fabrics formed a Bee In Fairfax QU many years ago which no longer is active. While making some baby quilts recently with 30s fabrics some of the exchange blocks were found in a box along with a picture of this setting from Keepsake Quilting. This is the first of the year's vow to finish
some UFO's."

Strips in the Shadows
Member: Dottie Dane
"Fairfax QU has had several Strip Pieced blocks for Friendship Block Exchanges. Some of these were left over after a drawing and I made a few more, setting them apart in these frames. This is a Community Service quilt that will be donated after the Show. These blocks use up scraps; this is just one of many quilts I have done for community service."

"I've always been drawn to turtles. Perhaps my spirit animal is a turtle? I've enjoyed watching them in the wild and in protected areas and am interested in learning more to help protect them. This quilt gave me an opportunity to use some of the interesting fibers I've collected over the years and to practice my couching skills."

Places I lived and Visited
Member: Roberta Dewees
"I was an Army brat and federal employee who moved homes and traveled a lot. This piece began as a world map panel. After it was embellished by the members of the Fairfax QU Embellishment Bee, I cut the panel apart, rearranged the pieces, wove part of the map with the accent fabric, then reassembled the pieces to make the final piece. Beneath the Waves
Member: Barbara Kauffman
"This was just a fun little ocean themed quilt I made to use some of the water fabric I painted in a Mickey Lawler class. I really enjoy playing with embellishments and motifs cut from fabric, and especially loved the grinning shark I found on some wild yardage. I regularly break the borders, letting the quilt spill over into its frame. "

"Spread kindness like Confetti! I've always wanted to make a scrappy quilt and what's not to love about this pattern. Augusta Cole presented many of her quilts at FQU in 2018, and when I saw her Confetti pattern, I knew I had to have one for myself! "

"As a war bride moving from Japan to rural Southern Indiana in the early 1960s, I was immersed into American culture and was presented many opportunities to learn. I was happy to be introduced to quilting. I taught myself to hand quilt by watching others and practicing at home. Most of my quilts have been given to family and friends in Japan."

Fairfax Corner
Member: Janet Marney
"At Fairfax Corner, my husband analyzed the splash pad fountains to figure out when we could walk through without getting wet. Our friends thought we were crazy, but I trusted Dave, so at the right time, we sauntered through arm in arm, perfectly dry! The border is special fabric from my mother’s final quilt. The back is pieced from Dave’s shirts."

Peacock Sunset
Member: Katherine Niemann
"The design emerged as I worked. I embellished the peacock prior to attaching it to the quilt. I had planned to use the backing fabric behind the peacock, but liked the orange contrast to the turquoise better. I sewed the quilt from the top, ironing curved pieces 1/4' under and sewing with blanket stitch. "

Member: Leslie Pfeifer
"This unusual block appealed to me because of the many different sizes of triangles. I thought it would be a perfect test for my recently acquired Marti Michell templates. No 1/8in measurements for me from that moment on. Partial seam construction and easy piecing because of the templates made it such an enjoyable project. I loved making it."

Out of my box
Member: Beth Shafer
"When I was choosing fabric for a friend’s quilt, I saw the blue and green batik fabric. I could not leave it behind. As I chose the greens I realized these quilt colors would be far from my usual colors. Far outside my comfy box. It’s become one of my favorite quilts. "

"Chained Together is one of the monthly lessons given by Joyce Lundigran. She gives you a pretty basic piecing pattern, and then the real work comes in applying the digital quilting. I decided to take these online course to feel more comfortable with the computerized custom quilting on my Gammill. Mistakes are many, but I have learned so much! "
