This year’s theme in Old Town Winchester coincides with the 50th anniversary of Virginia is for Lovers – and we invite you to join us because Old Town Winchester certainly has a lot to love! There are plenty of exciting activities planned in Old Town Winchester this year. We are starting the new decade out right by bringing in even more lively and entertaining activities to Winchester for our community.

The City of Winchester and the Old Town Advancement Commission are committed to inspiring community involvement, enhancing the quality of life for area residents, and attracting residents and visitors to shop, dine, and play in Old Town Winchester through this dynamic event series. This year will be especially exciting as we celebrate the eighth consecutive year for several of the events. All events are made possible through the financial support of the City of Winchester and dedicated sponsors.

WINCHESTER, VA – Celebrate the community’s Irish and Scottish heritage at the 5th annual Old Town Winchester St. Paddy’s Celtic Fest on Saturday, March 7 from noon to 9:00 p.m. This festival is free, and activities will take place inside Old Town Winchester businesses and along the Loudoun Street Mall (weather permitting).

Benefiting the SPCA

Continued this year! During all scheduled performances, a percentage of food and drink sales will benefit SPCA of Winchester, Frederick, and Clarke Counties.

Celtic Games for Children and Irish Dancers

SPCA will host Celtic activities for children on the Old Courthouse lawn. The Celtic activities will provide a fun atmosphere for lads and lassies ages 3-12.

Also, on the Courthouse lawn will be several Irish Dance Troupes performing throughout the day.

Other Fun Activities

A balloon artist, dancers, vendors, and bagpipers will be on the Loudoun Street Mall and in Old Town shops and restaurants throughout the day. There will also be alpacas on the Old Courthouse lawn. Winchester’s own Pipes and Drums bagpipers, one of the most popular musical groups, will fill the downtown with their beautiful music.

Back by popular demand this year, the Magic Lantern Theater and Handley Library will co-sponsor a 12:30 p.m. showing of the movie, The Quiet Man. A classic Irish film that takes place in the homestead of Ireland and features legendary actor, John Wayne.

This event and activities will be focused within Old Town Winchester businesses as well as in the Old Courthouse lawn area (weather permitting). Numerous establishments will host entertainment and give a percentage of drink and food sales to the SPCA. Participating businesses include: 50/50 Taphouse, 147 North Restaurant, Brewbaker’s Restaurant, Bright Box Theater, the George Washington Hotel and Winchester Brew Works.

WINCHESTER, VA – Old Town Winchester’s popular KidzFest, presented by Valley Pediatric Dentistry, returns Saturday, May 16th. This free, family-friendly event features over 50 interactive exhibits highlighting education, art, music, sports and more. It will be held on the Loudoun Street Mall from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

KidzFest activities and exhibits will take place primarily on the Loudoun Street Mall and the Old Town Courthouse lawn throughout the day, including a petting zoo, games, live performances and more. Also, do not miss Fort Loudoun History Day taking place during the event!

Returning for a second year, there will be bike stunt shows where a stuntman will jump across obstacles and teach helmet safety. Wildlife Ambassadors will be performing several shows with meet and greet sessions with the animals. Mandy the Clown will also be back for two shows, interacting with the kids and having a good time on the Mall.

This is a great family-friendly event to showcase Old Town Winchester’s exciting atmosphere and for parents to discover upcoming summer activities.

Unwind and enjoy all that Old Town Winchester has to offer at Friday Night Live (FNL). Returning for a eighth year, Friday Night Live is the perfect opportunity to meet up with friends, shop, dine and enjoy great live music, street performers and artisans. The Taylor Pavilion will be the main venue for performances every third Friday in June, July and August (ticket required), however, the Loudoun Street Mall will be filled with family-friendly acoustic music, street performers, and activities (free).

This year, cover bands will perform songs with different genres of music than featured in the past. There will be beach tunes, classic rock and fun. FNL is a great way to end the work week!

The June Friday Night Live will feature the Parrott Beach Band – A Jimmy Buffett-style band. Our first of 3 concerts is the perfect occasion to break out your flip flops, and shark fins and dance under the stars at the Taylor Pavilion.

July’s feature band is Captain Fantastic. This Elton John Tribute band will bring tunes we can all sing along with! We are so lucky to have this group visiting Winchester on the heels of the blockbuster Elton John movie last year!

August’s FNL event will welcome back a Winchester favorite, the Robbie Limon Band, who will perform hits from the 1970’s and 1980’s. Limon performs all over region and packs the Taylor Pavilion every time he performs. His mix of cover songs will be sure to have you on your feet dancing and enjoying your night in Old Town Winchester.

Enjoy Friday in Old Town Winchester during each FNL event. Explore and shop at more than 60 unique businesses ranging from apparel, jewelry, boutiques, art galleries, museums and more. Attendees can dine at any of the 35 restaurants located in Old Town Winchester. There will be a beer and wine garden available for ticket holders.

Drink proceeds purchased at the beer and wine garden will go to the event’s non-profit partner, the Winchester SPCA.

Celebrate our nation’s independence a day early at Rockin’ Independence Eve, a free, family-oriented event that’s fun for all ages. This All-American event in Old Town Winchester is held on July 3rd and attracts thousands of people each year.

Back by popular demand is the band Souled Out at the Taylor Pavilion between the Loudoun Street Mall and the Braddock Autopark. This band plays in and around the region and loves getting the crowd to their feet. Also, enjoy the beer and wine garden that benefits the SPCA, listen to the amazing harmonies of a barbershop quartet, and sign up early to participate in the Old Town Hamburger Eating contest.

Numerous family activities will be located throughout the Loudoun Street Mall, primarily near the Splash Pad. There will be fun for the young and young at heart all along the Loudoun Street Mall!

Returning for the summer of 2020 is a Winchester favorite: Family Movies on the Mall. Thanks to the support from Partlow Insurance and Erie Insurance, this family-friendly event remains free to attend at the historic Taylor Pavilion.

This event is a great opportunity to gather a blanket and boxed dinner and enjoy a night in Old Town under the stars while viewing blockbuster family hits. The movies will be screened by Winchester Parks and Recreation. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring seating. New this year, in the event of rain, movies will be screened at Handley Library.

We are happy to announce another great summer season of second Saturday Classic Movie Nights screened by Magic Lantern Theater, Winchester’s classic film experts since 2001.

Moviegoers are encouraged to bring seat cushions, blankets or chairs and bring a picnic or take-out dinner from one of the many restaurants in Old Town Winchester. This is the perfect event to cuddle up with someone special and enjoy an old-fashioned dinner and movie night.

June 13 – Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) – The original Star Wars introducing Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon. Rated PG, 121 m.

July 11 – Film to be chosen by a Community Facebook Poll. The choice will be among three classic dramas representing prominent directors from Hollywood’s Golden Era, e.g. Hitchcock, Wilder, Zinnemann.

Sunset Boulevard (1950) – Billy Wilder wrote and directed this indelible B&W portrait of Hollywood’s dark side, starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson. Rated G, 110 m.

Strangers on a Train (1951) – A chance encounter, a proposed “exchange of murders” and, eventually, a nighttime chase through an amusement park mark another of Alfred Hitchcock’s B&W masterpieces of suspense. Rated PG, 101 m.

From Here to Eternity (1953) – This classic depiction of the US military on the eve of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was nominated for 8 Oscars. It stars Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra and Deborah Kerr among others. Rated G, 118 m.

August 8 – Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980) – A biography that tells the story of the legendary rise of country singer, Loretta Lynn, from poverty-stricken beginnings in Kentucky to worldwide superstardom – and her close friendship with Winchester’s Patsy Cline. The 8th annual Oktoberfest will bring German music, dancing and much more to Old Town Winchester! This event is expected to be just as big and exciting as last year. Oktoberfest will once again encompass most of the Loudoun Street Mall including The Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum lawn and the Taylor Pavilion. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample German-inspired food, beers, and wine while experiencing different aspects of the German culture.

Our Old Town Winchester Burgermeister will again be crowned in September in honor of National Volunteer Day.

Everyone is invited to compete in the Best Dressed Lederhosen and Dirndl Contest on Saturday. The top prize is an overnight stay at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown.

A high energy band is back in Winchester for Oktoberfest: The Continentals, a band with a wide repertoire specializing in different ethnic styles of polka and waltz.

Friday will kick off with the Keg Tapping Ceremony. A horse drawn carriage will bring authentic German beer and a free tasting to the first 100 ticket holders. Our Austrian horses, Yeager and Meister, will be strolling down the Loudoun Street Mall to kick off the party!

Also featured on Saturday is Altwashingtonia Schuhplattler Verein, the “Original Bavarian Dance Club of Washington D.C.” Over 30 costumed professional Bavarian dancers will bring fun traditions and create a true Oktoberfest atmosphere. There will also be street performers, accordion players and activities for everyone.

Come spend time in Old Town this holiday season during our Holly Jolly Celebration on December 12th! Enjoy caroling and holiday activities including free horse-drawn holiday wagon rides starting at 1 p.m. There will be specials at shops and restaurants all day. Back by popular demand, from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., shop at the Holly Jolly Market for locally-made decorative greenery, gourmet chocolates, natural health and beauty products, raw honey, and homemade baked goods. Sip on hot cocoa and enjoy warm treats while you shop. Winchester Parks and Recreation will again host Santa Claus at Santa’s Headquarters from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Godfrey Miller House (28 S. Loudoun Street). Children can create a holiday craft while waiting to meet Santa. Enjoy holiday carols throughout Old Town Winchester provided by local choral groups. Free horse-drawn wagon rides will be offered starting at 1:00 pm. Meet in front of the Old Courthouse (20 N. Loudoun Street) to pick up a timed ticket. Tickets go fast so get in line early! Enjoy holiday shopping and dining in Old Town and return to the wagon area prior to your ticket time. Thank you to City of Winchester Parks & Recreation for assisting with Santa’s Headquarters!
