KITCHENS…
TRADITIONAL KITCHEN
Traditional kitchens are characterized by a more ornate door style and classic touches like the colour white for the cabinets. A
hardwood floor is typical, as this kind of floor is universal and has stood the test of time. Feminine curves and traditional materials are
found in this style of space.
CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN
The contemporary kitchen is keeping up with the latest styles. It is devoid of clutter and darkness, and is kept warm with the use of
different textures. Clean lines, airiness and simplicity define a contemporary kitchen. Neutrals are the predominant colour with the
use of other colours as an accent – like the powder blue walls here a s backdrop to the zebrawood of the cabinets.
TRANSITIONAL KITCHEN
Transitional style seems to be a happy medium between traditional and contemporary. There are still some subtle curves found in its
forms, and there’s still an appreciation for classic touches. This style avoids the characteristics of the two extremes as it avoids being to
ornate and stuffy, as well as too cold or austere. Some in the industry refer to transitional style as “updated classic”.
RETRO KITCHEN
Juke-boxes, roller skates and Formica countertops… A retro kitchen – this one in particular – alludes to kitchens of the 1950’s. It is
whimsical – if not a bit kitschy – as it is reminiscent of pop-culture of that era. Pastel coloured appliances and cabinets define retro-
50’s. The red and white checkers makes one think of a typical diner and the chrome in the hardware would also be found on vinyl-
upholstered barstools, should they find themselves in this kitchen.
THE MCPHAIL KITCHEN - TRANSITIONAL
The McPhails wanted a kitchen to suit their lifestyle. This included a peninsula, and some banquette seating in the breakfast nook.
Durable finishes were required as they have two active boys and a dog. They appreciate traditional style but it would be too stuffy for
this young and active family and so transitional made for a better fit. Horizontal lines create a more casual atmosphere and stools at
the peninsula create more versatile seating arrangements.
RUSTIC-MODERN KITCHEN
This layout is the layout of the McPhail kitchen, but a change in the finishes creates a whole new look altogether. The modern touches
in the kitchen are found on the glossy, clean-lined cabinets with their contrasting frame and door colours. The appliances and light
fixtures also boast a modern aesthetic. The rustic touches are the exposed brick wall and the live-edge decorative shelves adjacent to
the window. Old, original wood plank floors are also typical in a rustic setting.
BATHROOMS…
TRADITIONAL BATHROOM
Traditional bathrooms would carry the same characteristics as a traditional kitchen with a classic door style in a wood finish or
material. The traditional look here is further enhanced by ornate counter-top accessories and decorative shelving. Paneled walls, as
shown in the photo with the soaker tub, are a great trait of traditional design.
TRANSITIONAL BATHROOM
This bathroom can be considered transitional because it carries some traditional traits – the cabinet door profile and the limestone floor
and wall finishes – but is also spacious and airy feeling. A lack of window dressing plays a part in the airiness as do the pale wall colour
and neutral colours elsewhere.
EXOTIC BATHROOM
Creating an exotic vibe in this bathroom was almost too easy. Beautiful Moroccan tiles were used in abundance for the floor and walls,
in different but complementary patters. The ceiling fan is a must for a setting that strongly suggests a warmer climate. A sea-grass
floor mat and exotic wood cabinetry ground the room, visually, while a cool blue wall colour injects a breath of fresh air.
CONTEMPORARY BATHROOM
A contemporary bathroom is the epitome of clean. The floating vanity stops any grime from building up around its base as well as
creates an airy, clutter-free vibe. A frameless glass shower enclosure further contributes to minimal lines and neutral colours dominate
the fixtures and finishes. Bamboo makes a great contemporary statement and is also practical in a moisture-prone space.
RUSTIC BATHROOM (1 OF 2)
This rustic bathroom was created for Bob and Margaret and it echoes the style of their master bedroom. The size of this room is
incredibly generous and requires two slides of pictures. In addition to the his and hers vanities with ample storage and a walk-in closet,
this bathroom boasts a rustic vibe through its finishes…
RUSTIC BATHROOM (2 OF 2)
…These finishes include a stone-clad fireplace and timber beams on the ceiling. The doors and windows are also finished in natural
wood that matches the cabinetry. As this is a bathroom, a crisp, spa-like vibe is required and this is done with glossy porcelain floor
tiles that repeat the colours in the other finishes of the room, as well as a tile-clad feature wall. I always like to inject my warm-
coloured spaces with a “breath of fresh air” – in this case, the turquoise and green toned artwork.
CLOSETS…
ECLECTIC CLOSET
This is a walk-in closet that is suitable for masculine and feminine personalities. The traditional patterned wallpaper is offset by the
mid-century styled wood finishes. The cool colour of the wallpaper is harmoniously balanced by the warm colour of the wood. Retro
style fixtures, like the bench and the pendant light, bring this eclectic look together.
SCANDINAVIAN CLOSET
Popular the world over, it would seem Scandinavians’ style is successful due to the way it has been incorporated into its climate and
seasons. Having to compensate for long nights during half of the year, light colours have always been the defining element of
Scandinavian style. The use of local woods, in a natural finish, and fun patterns are typical here. This style is also known for its clean
lines and minimalism.
TRADITIONAL CLOSET
This closet brings back traditional style with the damask wallpaper, hardwood floors – dark, and white-painted wood furniture. The
ornate light fixture is well-suited for this interior. This closet could easily be too dark, however, the use of white creates the balance
here.
RUSTIC-MOD CLOSET
Just like the Rustic-Modern kitchen, this closet is very current in its harmonious mixture of modern lines and rustic finishes. The
closet panels are lacquered black while the drawer fronts are lacquered white for ultimate contrast. The futuristic light fixture is a fun
touch and it all comes together with the exposed brick wall and white-washed oak plank floors.
