On behalf of the Peter Stuyvesant Little League Board of Directors, I’m thrilled to welcome you to the 2020 Spring Season!

Founded in 1956, PSLL marks its 64th consecutive year offering Little League Baseball and Softball in the community. Approximately 800 children are enrolled in our programs across 14 divisions and 70 teams, and we are proud to engage over 300 volunteers in the community. We strive to teach fundamental skills and a love of baseball and softball, while building intangible skills such as hustle, sportsmanship, teamwork, and courage.

We’re very proud to again offer a fully chartered Challenger Division in 2020, which provides a Little League opportunity for athletes in our community with special needs. There will be several Challenger events on Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm at either Con Edison Field or Stuytown Playground 10 (please visit www.psll.org for schedule updates). The shared experience of players and ‘buddies’ from our baseball and softball divisions makes each Sunday memorable—we hope you will join and support this important program.

Our Little League World Series Tournament teams had a banner year in 2019. Both our 10u and 11u Baseball teams won District 23 (Manhattan & West Bronx) Championships, ultimately falling to Staten Island teams in the NY State Sectional finals. Our 10u Softball Tournament team also won a District 23 banner, a first for PSLL softball. We also entered 12u and 14u baseball, as well as 12u softball teams to compete in postseason play.

PSLL will again play host to many District 23 and New York Section 3 South games in the 2020 LLWS Baseball and Softball Tournaments, beginning in late June at Con Edison Field. Please come out and support PSLL on the Road to Williamsport!

In 2019 we also launched our inaugural PSLL Summer Baseball & Softball Camp! PSLL Camp is open for registration on a half-day, full day, or weekly basis for ages 7-13. We also enrolled over 200 players in our expanded fall programming for younger ages at the Stuytown Playgrounds.

As always, we are extremely grateful for the support of Con Edison and the beautiful ballfields that are the anchor of our program. Founded in 1956, Peter Stuyvesant Little League (PSLL) has provided baseball and softball programs to kids on the East Side of Manhattan for more than 60 year.

PSLL is a volunteer, non-profit organization chartered by Little League International. In partnership with Con Edison and StuyTown, PSLL runs a number of programs during the year, including Winter and Fall Clinics, Spring Recreational Program, Little League World Series Tournament program, and a PSLL Summer Camp.

Baseball registration is open to co-ed players ages 5 through 14, residing—or attending school—within our Little League chartered catchment zone, which is approximately between 13th and 72nd Streets, east of Fifth Avenue. Softball registration is open to girls ages 5 through 16 residing or attending school on the east side of Manhattan between 13th and 59th Streets. Please see psll.org for our current boundary map.

PSLL is honored to offer a fully chartered Little League Challenger Program; an adaptive “soft”ball program for boys and girls with physical and developmental challenges between the ages of 4 and 18 (or still in high school).

Founded in 1939, Little League® Baseball and Softball is the world’s largest organized youth sports program, serving millions of players and more than one million adult volunteers in every U.S. state and more than 80 countries.

PSLL is within Little League District 23, which includes Manhattan and the west Bronx. Our District Tournament teams (10u, 11u, 12u baseball, as well as 12u and 10u softball) will be assembled in June, and various district tournament games will be hosted at Con Edison Field during the summer. The District Tournament is the first round of the Little League World Series. The LLWS is an opportunity for PSLL to showcase our program and most talented players to the broader NYC Little League community.

EQUIPMENT AND UNIFORMS

All your child needs in order to participate in the league is their own glove. Although many players choose to use their own bats and helmets, PSLL provides each division with helmets, bats, balls and catcher’s equipment. Uniforms, including baseball caps, are also provided to each player, and they must be worn (in full) during each scheduled game. PSLL team jerseys are to be tucked in and hats are to be worn straight. While not mandatory, we recommend that baseball players—starting in the 8s division, also wear heart guard shirts—which are available through most sporting goods stores and online. Protective cups are strongly recommended for male players in all divisions, and are required for any baseball player in the catcher position. Cleats are also recommended, but not required, at all levels. Metal cleats are NOT permitted. Please address equipment questions with your Division Commissioner.

BAT STANDARDS

As of January 1, 2018, all bats used in little league baseball games or activities must meet the new USA Baseball Bat Standard. Little League baseball bats that were approved for use in the 2017 season may no longer be acceptable. Solid, one-piece wood bats that adhere to Little League’s regulations will be allowed for play, with or without the USA Baseball mark. Multi-piece wood bats must have the USA Baseball mark to be approved for play. Approved bats carry the USA Baseball Logo. Visit www.usabat.com for more information on the USA Bat standard and a complete list of approved bats. PSLL and our umpires are required to enforce this bat safety standard.

CON EDISON FIELD

Our neighbors at Con Edison make their terrific facility available during our season for the exclusive use of PSLL. An extensive renovation of the field, and the implementation of a synthetic turf surface, occurred after Superstorm Sandy in 2012. This was a major investment in our community by Con Ed, and one for which we are extremely grateful.

Our minors and majors baseball and softball divisions play at Con Ed. Our new batting cages (behind the West field) were erected in 2017 with support from generous sponsors, and with continued community support, we are able to add a third batting cage this year, as well as additional training tools and facility improvements.

MURPHY’S BROTHER’S PARK

In 1921 the Board of Aldermen named the park for politician and businessman John J. Murphy (1865-1911). The son of Irish immigrants, Murphy was one of eight brothers and sisters who was raised on the east side of Manhattan. He served as an alderman and as the acting Democratic leader of the 12th Assembly District. Murphy made his fortune as president of the New York Contracting and Trucking Company, which had a contract to excavate the site for Penn Station. His good fortune in business and politics resulted in large part from his more remarkable brother, Charles Francis Murphy (1858-1924), the sachem of Tammany Hall.

TIM McGINN FIELDS AT MURPHY’S BROTHER’S PARK

Tim McGinn was PSLL Board member and PSLL Coach, parishioner of Epiphany, and served on Community Board 3, which was instrumental in getting the Murphy ball fields changed from a concrete play area to the ballfields that stand there today. Tim passed away far too soon in 2005, and the ballfields were named in his memory.

STUYTOWN PLAYGROUND 1

Stuytown Playground 1 is a newly refurbished space within Stuytown near 20th Street and 1st Avenue. We are grateful to our friends at Stuyvesant Property Services for permitting use of Playground 1 for our youngest participants. With a tee-ball diamond painted on a hard surface (sneakers only, please!), this will be a terrific entry experience for our Instructional Softball and 5-yr old Tee Ball Players. Our 7s Division will practice midweek at Playground 1.


Stuytown Playground 3 (near 20th St and Avenue C) will also be utilized for younger age groups, namely our new 6 yr. old division. Playground 3 has also been recently resurfaced, and is an artificial turf surface.


Stuytown Playground 10 (Between the 20th Street Loop and the Oval) will occasionally be used for special event Challenger games.

SPORTSMANSHIP

PSLL is committed to providing each player and every volunteer participant with a positive Little League experience. The fabric of our diverse, all-volunteer league is held together by good sportsmanship and the mutual respect of everyone involved. To this end, PSLL has developed guide-lines for sportsmanship, as well as expected parent/guardian and manager/coach commitments.

PSLL DEFINES SPORTSMANSHIP AS...

• Playing hard, giving maximum effort and hustling regardless of ability or outcome

• Enjoying the privilege of participating and the opportunity to compete and develop as a player and teammate.

• Being a humble winner and a gracious loser

• Treating everyone as you would want to be treated

• Cheering and encouraging all participants (on my team or the other team)

• Never speaking in a degrading or negative manner toward any participant

• Never using foul language

• Never throwing any equipment

• Never intentionally threatening or harming another participant

**Concerns should be voiced to your coach, or division commissioner, as they arise during the sea-son, with further escalation to PSLL leadership when appropriate. We want to hear your concerns and be the best we can be.

Open communications between parents, coaches and league officials is as important to the success of the league and your and your child’s experience as anything that happens on the field. We encourage parents to maintain an open dialogue with their coaches and managers and to email their division’s commissioner at [email protected] during the season with questions or concerns.

Additionally, parents are strongly encouraged to become involved in the division. Whether serving as an assistant coach, official scorekeeper for your team, or helping out with practices, there are many ways you can help to make the experience positive and fulfilling for your child and their teammates. A volunteer application and national background check are required for any on-field or in the dugout volunteer roles. There are also many off the field opportunities as well that you’ll be invited to participate in during the season. Email [email protected] to inquire about ways that you can contribute.

TEE BALL

Tee Ball for 4 and 5 year olds is your child’s introduction to baseball and Peter Stuyvesant Little League. No prior experience is expected or required. The Tee Ball program is focused on providing an overview to baseball and teaching basic skills, such as fielding, throwing, running the bases, and swinging a bat.

There will be 8-10 games during the regular season. Games are 90 minutes and played on Saturday mornings at the newly-renovated Playground #1 in Stuyvesant Town. Half of each game (about 45 minutes) will be instruction, drills, and other baseball activities supervised by professional instructors and our volunteer coaches. The other half of each game (about 45 minutes) will be a simulated game. We do not keep scope or record outs during the simulated games, and each team will bat through its entire lineup each inning. Similar to the instructional period, most of the game will be devoted to skills development and fostering an understanding and appreciation of the game.

Each player will receive a trophy at the end of the season.

6S BASEBALL

6s co-ed baseball is for players born on, or the year prior to, August 31, 2014. During the year, they will expand on the skills taught at the Tee Ball division. In addition to reinforcing the basic mechanics of throwing, hitting, and pitching, players will progress in skill through instruction from professionals and volunteer coaches. For example, while they will start off the season using a tee, they will progress to hitting coach pitched and in some cases machine pitch balls.

Players will usually have one game on the weekend at Tim McGinn Field at Murphy’s Brother’s Park. No standings are kept, and there are no playoffs in this division. Each player will receive a trophy at the end of the season. Team formation will be determined by the Division Commissioner and the PSLL Board.

7S BASEBALL

7s co-ed baseball is for players born on, or the year prior to, August 31, 2013. During the year, they will expand on the skills taught in the 6s division. In addition to reinforcing the basic mechanics of throwing, hitting, and pitching, players will progress in skill through instruction from professionals and volunteer coaches. Players will hit against a pitching machine, with integration of coach-pitch.

Standings are not kept, and there are no playoffs. Players will usually have one game (1 weekend, typically Sunday) and one division-wide practice per week. Trophies will be given at the end of the season for all players. An All-Star game will be held at the end of the season. Team formation will be determined by Division Commissioner and PSLL Board. Buddy requests will not be honored.

8S BASEBALL

8s co-ed baseball is for players born on, or the year prior to, August 31, 2012. This is considered the first year of competitive baseball. Players will expand on the skills taught at the 7-year old division, while continuing the emphasis of good sportsmanship and a greater incorporation of baseball rules.

This is the first year that kids pitch in a game. A pitching machine and child-pitching will be integrated throughout the season. Players should be able to throw from third base to first, and avoid being hit by a pitch. They should be able to properly catch a ball and understand basic fundamentals.

Standings are kept and there is a playoff at the end of the year. All teams will play on Saturdays with additional games and practices during the week.

An All-Star game will be held at the end of the season. Trophies for the first and second place teams. Team formation will be determined by Division Commissioner and PSLL Board. Buddy requests will not be honored.

MINORS BASEBALL

The Minors divisions is for boys and girls ages 9 and 10. The division introduces a number of changes from the 8s, first and foremost, all games will be played on the artificial turf of ConEd Field. While the Minors division is still instructional and our primary goal is to increase the player’s knowledge and enjoyment of the game, the time commitment and game competition is greater than the previous division. A number of changes to be aware of and prepare your player for are:

• Games are 6 innings (or two hours) and entirely kid pitch• Kids will pitch from a 6 inch mound, 46 feet from home plate• The base paths are lengthened to 60 feet• Stealing of all bases is allowed• The number of balls entitling a walk is lowered to the traditional 4 balls• The game will be officiated by a professional umpire

We have arranged a substantial level of practice help from outside professionals, and the new rule and setting changes will be an immediate focus for our first year Minor’s players.

In most weeks there will be two games—one on Sunday and another on Tuesday or Thursday. Primary practices will be on Saturday at the East River Fields and on Tuesday or Thursday in the batting cages of ConEd. Individual coaches may choose to arrange additional practice time.

The season will end with playoffs that all teams make, a trophy ceremony after the championship game, and a subsequent all-star game. Players will also have opportunity to try out for the league’s 11-12-year-old LLWS tournament team.

MAJORS BASEBALL

The Majors division serves as a step up from Minors serving kids aged 11 and 12, and although the rules are nearly identical, the level of play is much more advanced. Players must be ready to hit a variety of pitching at a higher velocity. Situational awareness is expected, including where to make the play and how to run the bases. Standings are kept and there are playoffs at the end of the year. Players will typically have 1-2 practices per week until the season begins. During the season they will play 1-2 games per week (every Saturday plus one weeknight) and attend 2 practices (one fielding and one batting).

An All-Star game will be held at the end of the season. Players will also have opportunity to try out for the league’s 11-12-year-old LLWS tournament team.


JUNIORS BASEBALL

Juniors Baseball for ages 13 and 14, represents a step up from the Majors division. The Juniors baseball players must have had success at the Majors level, and be ready to add more skill and strategy to their game. There are a number of changes the players should be ready for:

• The most noticeable difference is a larger playing field. Teams will play on a traditional diamond with 90-foot base paths and a pitching distance of 60 feet, 6 inches• Base stealing and lead offs are allowed starting at this level• Games are seven (7) innings in length• Teams will typically have between 12-15 players

Practice starts in March and games will begin in April, ending in June. Players will usually have several practices before the season begins, then either single or doubleheader games during the weekend on Saturdays or Sundays. Games will take place at Murray Bergtram Field (near South St. Seaport), Pier 40 or Clinton Field, Central Park, Randall’s Island, East River Fields and 145th Street. All equipment and bats must meet Little League rules for Juniors Division and/or comply with in-house or New York State approved rules.

The Juniors division is expected to be comprised of players from multiple leagues, including PSLL, Greenwich Village LL, Downtown LL, OLS and Harlem LL.

INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTBALL

The Instructional Softball division is intended to introduce the basic rules of the sport in a fun, non-competitive environment. Teams meet once per week on Sunday mornings at the newly renovated Playground 1 in Stuyvesant Town. The first half of Sunday morning consists of general skill development and basic fundamentals such as base running, throwing, fielding, and batting. The second half is a scrimmage with another team. Every player bats until they make contact either off a tee or coach pitch depending on the child’s skill level. There are no strike outs or getting thrown out at first base yet; all players will make it to home plate while receiving high fives from the base coaches and their teammates. The fielding team is rotated through the different positions allowing each player to be exposed to all positions. All four instructional softball teams will share Playground 3 on Sunday mornings across two tee-ball sized diamonds—we expect to rotate the teams and give all a chance to see and play with their friends across the division each week.

There is no formal practice schedule for this age group. However, we will offer an open clinic for the Intermediate division on Tuesdays 3:30-5:00pm at Playground 3, and encourage any interested Instructional players to join!

INTERMEDIATE SOFTBALL

Intermediate softball is for girls 7 and 8 years old. The girls will continue to build their skills in baserunning, fielding, throwing, and batting, as well as learning the rules and strategies of the game in a (very slightly!) more competitive environment from the instructional division. There will be one instructional practice time plus game each weekend, along with a practice opportunity midweek afterschool. Practice drills will be supervised by parent volunteer coaches with support from professionals. Games will be underhand coach pitch, with the possibility of moving towards kid pitch to mirror the progression of the baseball divisions and encourage the development of pitching skills in preparation for the minors division.

All players in attendance will bat continuously through the lineup. Teams will switch sides after 3 outs or 5 runs are recorded. Scores may be kept, but there are no standings or playoffs. All four intermediate softball teams will play Sunday mornings at Murphy Park. We strive to have an ‘all-star’ game at the end of the season versus a team from another NYC Little League (interleague game).

MINORS SOFTBALL

Minors Softball (Ages 9-10) This is considered the first year of competitive softball and will be played on the larger Con Ed Field. Players will expand on the skills taught at both the Instructional and Intermediate levels. Players should be ready for more advanced rules and an emphasis on pitching development.

The pitching rubber is at 35 feet and the softball is an 11” ball. At this level there will player pitching, and true strikes, balls, outs, and walks are recorded with discretion. We anticipate beginning the season with ‘no walks’—after four balls a Coach will inherit the pitch count and complete the at bat, generally resulting in more balls put in play, more defensive opportunities, and more development. Players begin to understand the defensive end of the game. Base stealing is not allowed at this level. Players should be learning to record force outs and complete throws to first base, and should be properly catching the ball. Standings are kept and there are playoffs at the end of the year.

Players will usually have 2-3 activities per week. Games on Saturday afternoons and on occasional Mondays. Open advanced clinic opportunity at Murphy’s Park on Mondays and Minors team practices on Wednesdays. Teams are formed through a draft process after girls have attended the skill evaluation event in Feb. the evaluations and draft are in place for a best effort for team parity.

MAJORS SOFTBALL

Majors Softball marks a move to a higher level of game play, with rules designed to prepare players for competitive play (District or high school) while maintaining the instructional spirit and supportive environment of PSLL recreational-league softball.

• Batters should expect to face windmill-style pitching at a variety of speeds, and face guards are REQUIRED on batting helmets; compliant shared helmets are available in the team equipment bags. • Base stealing and dropped-3rd-strike rules are in effect at this level, and sliding is expected. • Defensive awareness includes where to make the play, understanding forced and unforced outs, backing up plays, holding runners, and avoiding defensive interference. • The pitching rubber is at 40 feet and the ball is 12”.

Standings are kept during the regular season and there is a playoff tournament at the end of the year. Games are officiated by professional umpires, and we have arranged a substantial level of practice help from outside professionals, in addition to the instruction and encouragement that our experienced volunteer Coaches and Managers provide. Teams will usually have two to three practice opportunities and one or two games per week (Saturday and occasional weekday evenings). Games are played on the ConEd turf fields; practices may be there or at other locations. Teams may also have a few Interleague games scheduled with other Manhattan leagues; times and locations for Interleague games may differ from our regular schedule.

JUNIORS/SENIORS SOFTBALL

Juniors and Seniors softball (ages 13-14 and 15-18) play a competitive interleague schedule against teams from around the city. Games are played on Saturdays and/or Sundays. About half of the games will take place at Con-Ed with the other half distributed among fields around the city. The teams play 10 to 12 games and the top teams enter a playoff at the end of the season.

CHALLENGER DIVISION

PSLL’s Challenger Division is an adaptive ‘soft’ball program for boys and girls with physical and develop-mental challenges between the ages of 4 and 18 (or still in high school). Challenger players enjoy the joy of baseball while realizing the wonders of team sports. Challenger games are not competitive allowing players of any ability to participate. There is no fee for Challenger players as PSLL covers all fees including uniforms. Uniforms (tee shirts and caps) are provided to the players. Challenger is not just about the players; the experience is shared by Buddies who make each game memorable. The success of Challenger is equal parts the player and the Buddy. Games are two innings long, with each team hitting through the line-up once each inning. There are no balls, strikes or outs. Depending on ability, batters can hit off a tee or a parent will soft toss. Buddies stay with players throughout the game so parents can watch their children. Challenger is about the celebration of another type of extraordinary little leaguer.

CONCESSIONS STAND

Our snack stand is located at Con Edison Field, just a block from Tim McGinn Fields, and is open on all game days and special events. Big Daddi’s delicious food, beverages and snacks are enthusiastically served (and often announced!) by our good friend Big Daddi Steve Johnson and his terrific crew.

GAME CANCELLATIONS & POSTPONEMENTS

In the case of inclement weather or other changes, your Coach or Division Commissioner will send an email, text, and/or SportsEngine message to affected player families. Managers may not unilaterally cancel games without Commissioner or League approval. In the case of threatening weather, if you haven’t heard from your team manager, then presume your game is still on. All in-progress games will be immediately cancelled or postponed by the umpires in the event of lightning/thunder. *Please LIKE our Peter Stuyvesant Little League Facebook Page to receive timely updates*

PROHIBITIONS

The playing fields are expensive to maintain and in order to keep them in top shape, we ask that everyone follow the below guidelines:

• No animals are allowed on the Con Edison Field, which includes all areas past the front gate.• No alcohol is permitted on the fields.• Sunflower seed and nut shells, gum and popcorn are specifically prohibited. These foods can clog our complex and delicate drainage systems, at significant expense to PSLL.• No food of any kind is allowed on the playing areas, which includes the dugouts and batting cages.• Only turf shoes and sneakers allowed on the field—no metal cleats.• No bikes, scooters, or skateboards are permitted on the field.• Kids and unauthorized adults are prohibited from entering the storage sheds• No one is allowed in the batting cages without the express consent and accompaniment of an authorized league rep. (e.g. coach)

Con-Ed is a private facility and the field use is by permit only. The batting cage areas are reserved by the divisions and are for coach use only. Only coaches, players, or field personnel are allowed on their field. All visitors are confined to the bleacher and concession stand areas only.

PARENT/GUARDIAN EXPECTATIONS

Parents and guardians, are critical to each of our player’s development. PSLL encourages all parents to be sure their children attend all practices and games on time. And while team practices are vital, it’s even more important that players have an opportunity to practice with a parent or guardian often. Especially at the younger ages, even a daily 20-minute catch goes a long way toward improving player skills and nurturing success during the games.

Among the most important guidelines for parents are the following:

1. Children participate to have fun. The game is for youth, not adults.

2. Participants are expected to make a best effort to attend all games and team activities. Parents are expected to communicate clearly (and often) with coaches regarding any expected absences—we want to avoid game forfeitures and allow for an opportunity for players to be ‘called up’ to fill out a shorthanded team, when applicable.

3. Coaches should be informed by parents of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of the player or the safety of others -- including in the upper baseball divisions where a player may have recent-ly pitched in a non-PSLL baseball game. Arm safety is paramount!

4. Parents and their guests on the field should always show respect and courtesy and demonstrate positive support for all players, coaches, officials, umpires and spectators.

5. No parent shouldn’t ever ridicule or yell at their child, or any other participant, for making a mistake. A child should never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance.

6. Game officials, and especially umpires, should be respected. Do not question, discuss, or confront coaches on the game field, but rather arrange to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place. In particular, we have teenage umpires employed in the baseball 8s division -- if you disagree with a call please especially refrain from harassing these umpires, who are children themselves, have come through our PSLL programs, and are doing their very best. All umpire decisions are final. Any rule interpretation appeal will be made to PSLL by the affected team managers.

7. Parents are expected to refrain from drugs, tobacco or alcohol consumption during PSLL activities. Con Edison Field is private property and these activities are expressly prohibited. A further note on umpires: Baseball and softball are games of subjective interpretations, and as a result, disputes will occur from time to time. However, it’s important that players learn respect. All in-game disputes by team managers that are taken up with an umpire are to be handled in a civil manner; spectators have no privilege to argue with an umpire’s call. The managers/coaches will conduct themselves with decorum, and once the umpire has made his/her final ruling, the managers will make no further field protest. Off-field protests may be lodged by team managers with the PSLL Board of Directors per Little League rules.

MANAGER AND COACH EXPECTATIONS

Managers and coaches are among the most important volunteers in the Little League program. PSLL relies on 120 of them each season! They have to know the game, and they have to love working with kids. The Peter Stuyvesant Little League subscribes to both Little League International’s guidelines for baseball and softball coaches and managers and the “Double-Coach” methods developed by the Positive Coaching Alliance. All PSLL coaches are expected to conduct themselves within these general parameters.

While winning is important and valued, PSLL coaches place an even greater value on providing opportunities for life lessons to young people through sports. Games and practices during the PSLL recreational baseball season are the times to instill sportsmanship, courage, confidence and skills instruction to all players and to give fair game-playing opportunities to each and every child on a roster. On the other hand, while still seeking opportunities to nurture and encourage each player, the PSLL recreational season playoffs and Little League World Series tournament play are traditionally more competitive game environments.

PSLL players at every age level expect to be provided with opportunities to learn the fundamentals of baseball or softball – our basic mission. Moreover, managers, at their discretion, are encouraged to provide players with reasonable opportunities to experience play at a variety of field positions and in different batting order slots. However, no player should be placed in a position that poses a physical danger to that player (e.g., a player should not play 1B unless he or she can catch the ball). All coaches specifically should refrain from disrespectful arguments with umpires, shouting in an intimidating way at children (including a coach’s own children), profanity within earshot of children, or making inappropri-ate physical contact.

A manager is responsible for maintaining frequent and clear practice and game-related communications with the parents or guardians of each child on his or her team. Managers should always do their best to keep such communications enthusiastic and cordial. Managers further are obligated to know and understand the Little League Rulebook, as well as all PSLL local rules, including all game and safety guidelines and required player game-time pitching, fielding and batting rules. All managers and coaches receive background checks and most are CPR/First Aid certified.

The security, emotional growth, and baseball-skill development of each PSLL player is the goal and responsi-bility of each coach and adult volunteer. Complete PSLL coaching guidelines can be found at psll.org/guide-lines.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Our many generous sponsors and supporters enable PSLL to continue investing in player develop-ment opportunities, which provide important supplemental support to our hardworking volunteer coaches.

In 2017 we erected batting cages at Con Edison Field and have added a third last year. We continue to expand the use of talented local resources to support our practice and clinic opportunities across the divisions and throughout the season, with an emphasis on the younger instructional divisions (McGinn Field) to help ensure broad fundamental skill development.

PLAYER EVALUATIONS

Each March, PSLL hosts player evaluations, which are mandatory for all baseball and softball minors and majors, and strongly encouraged for players in the 8’s co-ed baseball division.

The evaluations are necessary to ensuring that we are able to create reasonable parity across teams during the drafting and rostering process that follows. These are evaluations, not tryouts. All registered PSLL players will be placed on a team regardless of their skill level or abilities.

TOURNAMENT PROCESS

Each summer, PSLL enters multiple teams in the Little League World Series tournament. Teams are selected by mid-June, following the recreational season. As we continue to prepare to play deeper into the tournament, families should commit to availability through mid-July.

PSLL has entered a variety of teams in the Little League World Series District 23 tournaments that kick-off in mid-June, following the recreational season, and often run into late July depending on the team’s success. Players are chosen by the PSLL Tournament Committee following open tryouts, and the selections are primarily based on a player’s baseball or softball abilities. As we strive to put forth our strongest players, this is an all-star team to be entered into competitive play against the best of our neighboring Little Leagues in Manhattan, the west Bronx, and (hopefully) beyond.

AWARD DISTRIBUTIONAwards are distributed at the conclusion of the championship game in each division, with trophy presentation on the field. (Typically precedes the all star game, too) The postseason award winners are selected by coach nominations from each team, and ultimately by vote by all coaches in the Division. All players in Tee Ball, 7s, and McGinn Softball Divisions receive a trophy. 1st & 2nd place trophies are awarded in other divisions.

CAHILL SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDNamed in memory of Larry Cahill, longstanding PSLL parent coach and beloved member of the community, our Sportsmanship award is presented to one player on every team who exemplifies Larry’s spirit of teamwork.

PETER O’NEIL HUSTLE AWARD New Award This award recognizes the PSLL Tournament team player who embodies the dedication, loyalty, teamwork, selflessness, grit, determination, heart, and hustle exemplified by our longest-serving – and most valuable – volunteer, Peter O’Neil.

This award is one of high honor – the recipient embodies the qualities that make our community proud to wear the PSLL logo.

THE DICKSON SHEH AWARDThe DICKSON SHEH SERVICE AWARD is presented to the PSLL volunteer who exhibits outstanding enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment to Peter Stuyvesant Little League, and whose contributions will have had a meaningful and lasting impact on our community. Dickson Sheh was a longtime PSLL softball coach and advocate whose spirit and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all those whom he encountered. Dickson passed away in 2018. This award honors his service and dedication to PSLL.

DESAPIO MVP AWARDNamed after William “Billy” DeSapio, Billy and his family were longstanding members of the Stuyvesant Town community; Billy’s dad Joe coached for many years, and his sons Joey, Billy and Martin all played in PSLL. Billy tragically lost his life in an vehicle accident in 1997. The DeSapio MVP award is presented to the most dominant all-around player in Minors and Majors Divisions, both Baseball and Softball.

SANDERS PITCHING AWARDNamed after Steve Sanders, a 28 year New York State Assemblyman who represented the East Side and Stuyvesant Town, and was a big supporter of PSLL during his tenure from February 1978 - January 2006. The Sanders Award is our ‘Cy Young’ award, presented to the most dominant pitcher in Minors and Majors Divisions, both Baseball and Softball.

MESSINA CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY Named after John Messina, former President of PSLL. John, his parents, brother, and three children have been longstanding members of the Stuyvesant Town community and all played in PSLL. This year marks the 10th anniversary of his untimely death in 2008. We honor John Messina’s contributions to both PSLL and the community by naming our Championship Trophy in his memory.

PSLL programming depends on parent volunteers at every level of our organization—from organizational leadership (Board members, Division Commissioners) to professional functions (marketing, sponsorship and fundraising) to (most importantly!) individual team coaches, managers, scorekeepers, and parent representatives.

As PSLL has grown to serve more than 500 families per year—and more than 800 players—the volunteer infrastructure required to ensure not only an excellent instructional and/or competitive program for every player at every level but also a well-run, professional organization that values every player and every family has grown exponentially.

This is where you come in: PSLL simply cannot provide the excellent experience you and your children have come to expect without the involvement of parents like you. In 2020, PSLL will work to enhance and expand our overall volunteer engagement program and we look forward to working with many of you. PSLL has a wide range of volunteer opportunities—some team focused and some organizational/operations focused—and we invite you to raise your hand and join the PSLL parent volunteer team. The descriptions below are meant to provide a very high-level overview of some of the league’s primary volunteer positions. HEAD COACH: Every team has a head coach who is responsible for every aspect of team play: organizing practices, managing rosters, directing player development, and ensuring that every player feels like he/she is contributing to the success of their team. Time commitment: 5+ hours/per week, including practices and games.

ASSISTANT COACH: Every team has an assistant coach who participates in overall team leadership and serves as a backup/”number two” to the head coach. The assistant coach may be asked to run practices or scrimmages when and if the head coach is unable to attend and to play an active on-field coaching role during games. Time commitment: 5+ hours per week, including practices and games.

MANAGER/SCOREKEEPER: Every team has a manager/scorekeeper who commits to attending every game and supporting the Head Coach and Assistant Coach in keeping score and ensuring that the players are fully aware of lineups, position assignments, and other game details. The manager/scorekeeper must be comfortable with using a smartphone app to keep score and must be reasonably familiar with baseball/softball scoring and rules. Time commitment: 2-4 hours per week, depending on game schedule.

TEAM PARENT: *New Position* The Team Parent is responsible for team coordination, communications, and community. This includes but is not limited to: Ensuring that all parents are fully aware of practice and game schedules; helping to coordinate group travel to and from practices; and supporting a positive and supportive team culture. Time commitment: 1-3 hours per week.

FIELD OPERATIONS: Field operations volunteers support PSLL operations throughout the season in keeping the fields safe and secure; maintaining equipment; and ensuring that all playing areas are game-ready.

LEAGUE OPERATIONS: League operations volunteers support overall PSLL activities and are available on an as-needed basis to support league operations including, but not limited to, the Opening Day parade; pre-season uniform organization; trophy distribution; signage; and more.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Community engagement volunteers represent PSLL in the community and play a key role in ensuring that every PSLL family feels connected to and supported by the league. Community engagement volunteers may represent PSLL at local events; staff merchandise tables at Con Ed Field; and more.
