If a child is absent on a day of the test, they will be tested the day they return to school. If they are absent for day 1, but present for day 2, they will take day 2 with their class and day 1 on the first day of the make-up window.

What does preparation look like?Our curriculum is aligned to the standards and the

state tests are standards-based tests.

A few weeks of targeted focus on specific strategies

needed for testing…– Thinking critically about the passage & questions – Making sure we understand what the question is asking

and that we are answering the question– Going back into the passage or problem when answering

questions– Multiple choice strategies – Understanding of short response criteria– Making sure we check our work

What’s new for the 2020 tests?• Tests continue to be untimed (started in 2016)

– Students have as much time as they need as long as they are working productively (not to extend beyond 2:55PM).• What does that mean? Actively checking, reading, writing and/or

reviewing his/her answers

• Each test (ELA & Math) remain 2 days days (Reduced from 3 in 2018)

• NYS Time Estimates– Grades 3-4

• Session 1: 60-70 minutes• Session 2: 70-80 minutes

– Grade 5• Session 1: 80-90 minutes• Session 2: ELA 90-100 minutes Math: 70-80 minutes

Aligned Language Arts Instruction

• Text-based Answers– Students will need to refer closely to the text to answer short and

extended response questions. They are required to use details from the text in their responses.

• Academic Vocabulary– Students will confront domain-specific vocabulary and will need to be

able to determine meaning within the context of the passage.

• Balancing Informational & Literary Text– Narrative & Informational passages

– Students select a response from 4 answer choices

– Within answer choices, students will be required to negotiate plausible, text-based distractors. Distractors will require students to comprehend the whole passage.

Short-Response (2 points) and Extended-Response (4 points)

– Students write an answer to an open-ended question

– Student must make an inference (claim, position, or conclusion) based on analysis of the passage, & then provide 2 pieces of text-based evidence to support the response

• Extended-Response: In Grade 3, E-R questions will require comprehension and analysis of an individual text. In Grades 4-5, E-R questions will require students to read & analyze paired texts (related by theme, genre, time period, etc.)

Ways we support students in school

• Teachers plan and reflect upon lab-sites (engage in PD) to support best teaching practices

• Continue to build students’ stamina, reading comprehension and mathematical understanding

• Teach process strategies for multiple choice questions

• Use baseline assessments to plan small group work and target individual needs

• Teach time management skills

• Provide practice and feedback on short-response and extended-response questions

• Emphasize students’ hard work all year and try to keep stress levels down. Mindset: Do your best work.


ELA – Ways to Support Your Child at Home

• Have your child read for an extended period of time to build stamina

• Ask your child questions about what they are reading to deepen their comprehension

• Have your child show you details from the text when answering questions about what they are reading

• Read a variety of genres with your child

• Review content vocabulary with your child


Math – How to help your child at home

• Practice multiplication & division facts

• Practice paraphrasing to help your child make sense of a problem or question

• Ask students: How many steps does this problem require? What will be your first step?

• Ask students to predict the answer given the question
