The MultiCare Foundations 2020 Annual Generosity Report demonstrates the many ways in which isolation, fear and uncertainty were overpowered by your compassion, care and support.

COVID-19 turned our world upside down. In the early days of the pandemic, MultiCare’s health care workers faced an unprecedented health threat and serious challenges to overcome, including the global shortage of personal protective equipment, testing and treatment methods.

We found light in the darkness through the very first word in MultiCare’s mission: partnering for healing and a healthy future. We needed help, and you answered our call. From the Inland Northwest to Puget Sound, this report highlights some of the ways in which your giving provided hope, care and healing in 2020.

Thank you, volunteersAs we moved through the pandemic, the role of MultiCare volunteers shifted to address immediate needs. They showed up in new ways, serving as door screeners to ensure everyone entering a MultiCare facility followed health and safety measures; calling to check on isolated senior citizens and lend an ear; and handmaking personal protective equipment for health care workers.

Volunteers like Sanyt made 58,000 comfort strips by hand for MultiCare’s frontline health care workers.

Donors funded the expansion of Code Lavender, a program that provides emotional, mental and spiritual care to MultiCare employees to reduce burnout and promote resiliency during traumatic and stressful events.

Local restaurants like Toscanos donated more than 22,000 meals to health care workers across MultiCare.

In 2020, MultiCare Foundations created Hope Grows Here, an at-home volunteer and community engagement project aimed at providing our communities with a morale boost. Projects included flower artwork, flower deliveries, homemade masks and personal protective equipment and care packages for health care workers.

ResearchDonors funded breakthrough, community-based research trials and experimental treatments through the MultiCare Institute for Research and Innovation (MIRI).

MultiCare is quickly distributing COVID-19 vaccines thanks to mass vaccination partnerships, grant funding and contributions to the COVID-19 Response Fund.

TestingMultiCare is able to deliver test results much faster by processing tests in-house. Donors helped purchase COVID-19 testing equipment for MultiCare Allenmore and Good Samaritan Hospitals and MultiCare Auburn Medical Center. Donor contributions have also allowed MultiCare to partner with Medical Teams International to provide mobile testing in South King County, targeting populations most at-risk.

Helping Hands fundHelping Hands is a special fund social workers and case managers use to help patients access transportation, housing, food and other basic needs. Funds are utilized by MultiCare social workers to help eliminate barriers to care and healing.

In 2020, your generosity expanded care for every child with new outpatient centers, continued family support and allowed dreams to become reality with the announcement of a new hospital facility.

Mary Bridge Children’s is getting a new home!In July, MultiCare announced plans to move Mary Bridge Children’s out of its current location embedded within MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital. By 2025, Mary Bridge Children’s will have a new, state-of-the-art children’s hospital building, where every element of care will be designed specifically for children and families.

Evangeline was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January 2020. Thanks to her Mary Bridge Children’s team of surgeons, nurses, Child Life Specialists and physical therapists (just to name a few) Evangeline is now back home with hope for the future.

Mary Bridge Children’s newest outpatient centers Mary Bridge Children’s continued to honor the network’s commitment to increasing access to care for children. Donors helped families get care closer to where they live, work and play by supporting Mary Bridge Children’s newest outpatient centers.

3,222 visits to the Mary Bridge Children’s Outpatient Center in Federal Way in the first few months of opening in 2020

Mary Bridge Good Samaritan Children’s Therapy UnitThe Mary Bridge Good Samaritan Children’s Therapy Unit (CTU) continued to provide therapy and services to children with special needs throughout the challenges of 2020.

Behavioral Health supportThe stress and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on behavioral health, including collective fatigue, anxiety and depression. Substance use and relapses were on the rise, as was the number of people with behavioral health issues visiting the emergency room or being voluntarily committed.

Despite those challenges, donors helped more people gain access to a continuum of treatment and support services for mental illness and Substance Use Disorder through the MultiCare Behavioral Health Network, which includes MultiCare Behavioral Health, Navos and Greater Lakes Mental Healthcare.*

17 young adults leaving foster care received supported housing through Independence Bridge

235 people received supported housing and wraparound support at Navos

$59,422.92 was distributed through Greater Lakes, providing furnishings and rental/other assistance, so clients could focus on their recoveries

169,291 remote services conducted by MultiCare Behavioral Health Network (telehealth and/or telephone)

78 percent of behavioral health services were remote, accounting for 84 percent of service hours

70 backpacks filled with comfort items for Navos Behavioral Health Hospital adult patients

1,150 community members attended one or more of Kids’ Mental Health Pierce County’s nine webinars, with topics on managing school stress, racism and social justice

Children and adolescent mental health supportTo respond to the critical need of mental health support, Mary Bridge Children’s formed a coalition of more than 100 organizations and stakeholders known as Kids’ Mental Health Pierce County. The mission is to improve access and care coordination for mental health services, bolster youth mobile crisis services and ultimately develop a family wellness center in Pierce County for families and youth. Donor funds support every service offered, including key staff positions.

18 youth and families were supported through the new Behavioral Health Community Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT). The MDT brings together numerous agencies throughout Pierce County to discuss complex behavioral health cases. They assess needs and identify resources, such as outpatient service recommendations, care coordination needs and behavioral management strategies. This allows families to get all the information they need in one place.

MultiCare Foundations 2020 virtual eventsIn 2020, several MultiCare Foundations events transformed into virtual experiences. While they looked different, generosity remained strong. Donors contributed more than $2.6 million through virtual events last year.
