• Safety for all JC Surveyors will be first priority.• Surveys to resume once the State of Emergency is lifted Nationally and locally permitted
• Joint Commission will review municipality and state specific data for COVID-19 cases
• Surveys will resume for hospitals performing elective surgeries and admitting non COVID-19 cases.
• Customer recovery and surge readiness must be in place for facilities to be surveyed
• Surveys will begin with “other accredited organizations” first and Hospital surveys will resume last
• TJC will check in with clients: 3 – 4 months prior to survey to discuss how things are going
• Avoid Dates: TJC will not be taking new “avoid” dates
• Will check in the hospital for readiness: 3 – 4 weeks prior to survey (some notice: protects surveyors)• Will not survey/consider retroactive documentation that would have occurred during this time. March
16th till the disaster is over• Survey Prioritization:

• US– Cases: 1,380,465 – Deaths: 83,150– Recovered: *230,287
Issues Update- re-opening
• Phase 1 (April 27) – May resume non-urgent/emergent health
care services, diagnostic radiology and lab services
• Phase 2 (May 6)– Outpatient surgeries and other invasive
procedures can resume• Issues
• Public fear of returning- PSAs and letters• Testing- turnaround time (72-96 hour time frame)• Visitation- patients waiting until they can have a
family member/support person with them
Ky’s Plan for re-opening
• Phase 3 (May 13)– Hospitals and care facilities can begin doing
non-emergency surgeries and procedures at 50% of their pre-COVID-19-era patient volume.
3 Pillars for Re-opening • Continued social distancing and masking when
in public• Testing– Widespread and repeated over time?
• Contact Tracing– What is an exposure?
• Does it matter whether they wore a mask, were never within 6 feet?
• What about items that may have been touched?– What about second degree exposures? – Should we use an abundance of caution and can
we afford to do that in all circumstances?
Degrees of Separation• Case study– Employee’s spouse works closely with a co-
worker whose life partner has tested positive. • Masks worn in the spouse’s workplace? NO• Distancing adhered to? NO
– Was spouse exposed? MAYBE- if the co-worker has CoVID-19
– Can you encourage the co-worker to test? – If no, do we then treat the spouse as exposed
and quarantine our employee until the spouse is tested? And when should the test be performed?
