Our Hope Is in the LORD Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who
promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23
Dear Friends in Christ,
May God’s peace that passes all worldly understanding be with you all. Indeed, these are difficult and trying days. Change, uncertainty and worry seem to greet us anew every morning. “When will this all end?” we wonder. Amid these greatly trying times, God remains with us as our certain hope. God never wavers in His promises of enduring mercy, steadfast love and tender care. God is still the solid, unchanging Rock of our Salvation. God’s peace from above reaches us and touches us here where we live. Please keep one another in your thoughts and prayers. A prayer, a phone call, handwritten note or email can keep us connected and help us maintain some sense of community. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I miss you all immensely. Even though we have suspended all worship services and congregational activities through April 10, the church is still operating as much as possible. Our mission and ministry, though understandably restrained, continues. As such, the church still has expenses which must be met and bills that need to be paid. I encourage you to continue your faithful and faith-filled financial support by mailing your offering to the church. Thank you. As we all move cautiously and carefully through the days ahead, I am reminded of a hymn I learned in my youth and have sung in my heart, in the shower and in church ever since. “Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine!” The third verse has become increasingly meaningful.
Perfect submission, all is at rest: I in my Savior am happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above, filled with His goodness, lost in
His love.

What are the “Seven Last Words” of Jesus? I’ve heard about them, but I’m not sure what they are other than they were said while he was on the cross. Jesus “Seven Last Words” were spoken while he died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Many churches use these words as the framework for their Good Friday Tenebrae services. In chronological order, Jesus' “Seven Last Words” from the cross are:
Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34)
Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. (Luke 23:43)
Woman, behold thy son! Behold thy mother! (John 19:26)
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46)
I thirst. (John 19:28)
It is finished. (John 19:30)
Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. (Luke 23:46) I am currently reading a very interesting book on this same subject as part of my Lenten devotions. It is entitled The Hope of Glory: Reflections on the Last Words of Jesus from the Cross by Jon Meacham. (He won the 2009 Pu-litzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography for American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House.) This book offers some excellent historical and theological insights to Jesus’ last words. I recommend it.

Please print an update of church service information. Some of us are uncertain of the latest news. Thank you. As I write this on March 24, all Grace Lutheran worship services and church activities are suspended through April 10th. This includes Palm Sunday and Holy Week services. A decision on Easter Sunday services on April 12th is pending developments and recommendations from health experts and governmental authorities. If Easter services are held, it is most unlikely they would not include Holy Communion. Grace activities canceled include the Palm Sunday Breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt. The Thursday noon Bible Study is on hiatus until further notice. The Grace Mission Trip Youth are still planning to hold their Chicken BBQ on April 19th from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. It is Drive-thru only in the parking lot at the back of the Grace Outreach Center. For $10.00 tickets, contact Cody Jerles at 330-418-0393 or email him at [email protected]. Grace Lutheran cancellations and updates are posted on Facebook and listed with WJER and News Channel Five. The Times-Reporter offers church news in its Saturday edition.

S ll Serving…S ll Learning
Grace Outreach Ministries handed out 65 bags of groceries to local families in need on Sat-urday, March 21. The Drive-thru Only event took place at the rear entrance of Luther Hall from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Board Director Joe Penrod noted our food pantry shelves were full of food just sitting there when it could be helping people in need. With the enthusiastic approval and help of his board, a plan to give out the food items was put into place and happily implemented. Members of the Outreach Ministries Board include Joe Erickson, Tanna Loveday, Judy Martin, Paul McFadden and John Wolfe. A special thank you to Jimm and Lisa Morris for packing 90 grocery bags and placing them in the “connecting room” at the end of Luther Hall for quick and easy access. Grace High School Youth continued to meet for Sunday School on Sunday, March 22. Teacher Nicole Willey arranged a conference call with the youth who listened to a sermon, “Be Not Afraid (um, yeah…ok): Pandemic Edition” by Nadia Bolz-Weber. Afterwards, Willey remarked, “We had a great discussion. We are so fortunate in so many ways in our con-gregation. They want to ‘meet’ again next Sunday!” Go for it!
Faith, Friends and the Family of God
Grace Lutheran VBS 2020 June 15-18 5:45—8:00 p.m.
This year’s Vacation Bible School program introduces a new format for learning and friendship activities. It will include opening exercises with music, a Story Station, crafts and recreation with refreshments. The youth will also decorate the “Jesus Tree” with hand-made ornaments emphasizing the theme of the day’s Bible story.
Participating children will move from one activity to another as led by their group guides. Children will be divided into three age-appropriate groups: Pre-K (age 3)-K, Grades 1-2 and Grades 3-5.
Story Station Schedule Monday: Jesus’ Family Tree: The Story of Ruth
We learn about Jesus’ family history and God’s plan of salvation.
Tuesday: Jesus’ “Two Families”: The Boy Jesus Goes to the Temple We learn how Jesus has both a family at home and a family with God.
Wednesday: Jesus’ Family of Friends: Jesus Visits Mary and Martha. We learn how families show their love by listening and serving.
Thursday: Celebrating the Family of God We share the joy of our home and church families with food, fellowship and fun.
Look for volunteer opportunities in the May Messenger. They will be posted on the bulletin board in the narthex. Thank you.

To Grace Congrega on from the Eilerts: Judy and I are discovering the trials and tribula ons of what to do with a forty year col-lec on of various items (anyone need a piano??) that have made their way into our home and our life in St. Clairsville. Yes, we are moving. But moving also means not being close to old friends that we have come to know as fellow members of Grace congrega-
on. We didn’t get to worship with you all that o en, but the rela onships we have with you as friends and as sisters and brothers in Christ are special. You will be missed. We are moving to Maineville, Ohio which is about 20 minutes away from our son and his family who live in Loveland, Ohio (suburban Cincinna , Ohio). May the Holy Spirit con nue to lead and guide Pastor Rice and Grace congrega on to serve with great generosity and joy.

From Palm Sunday to Easter Sun-day you'll find a daily activity for families on our Sparkhouse Face-book and Instagram page. It might be a game or a craft with simple supplies families have or could easily modify. Please share these posts on your social media with others. Families are encour-aged to share their experiences, reflections, and photos. Look for the first post on Palm Sunday, April 5.
Prayer Journey to the Cross Lent 2020
Wednesdays March 4-April 1 at 6:45 p.m.
Maundy Thursday (April 9) and Good Friday (April 10) at 6:45 p.m.
Did you know there are at least 650 prayers in the Bible? Of course, the most famous and most precious is our Lord’s Prayer recorded in Matthew 6:9-13.
Prayer is an important and integral part of our life with God. Jesus Christ encouraged us to pray often as a way of strengthening our relationship with God. He reminded us to keep the communication channels open and active with praise, thanksgiving, pleas and petitions; to express our joy and our sorrows; to avail ourselves to God’s love, comfort and peace.
Of course, Jesus himself prayed fervently and often. The Gospels record at least twenty-eight instances when Jesus set himself apart from the crowds and his disciples to pray. Jesus’ most ardent prayer was in the Garden of Gethsemane where his talk with God the Father concluded with the words, “Not my will, but Thy will be done.” And, most remarkably, in all the humiliation and agony of the cross, Jesus prayed—prayed for us.
During Wednesdays in Lent and continuing through Holy Week, we will hear again and learn from some of the outstanding, life-affirming prayers found in Scripture.
Our Prayer Journey Apr. 1: Jonah’s Prayer of Deliverance (Jonah 2:1-9) Apr. 9: Maundy Thursday: Jesus’ Prayer in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46) Service includes Holy Communion

GROCERY BAG MINISTRY
Thanks to all who have volunteered to be packers for the Grocery Bag Ministry this year.
Donations to the Food Pantry have increased in response to a greater need for our food bags. In February we distributed 101 bags, and have already distributed 136 in March. We are seeing a greater demand for this outreach program. Monetary and food donations are very much appreciated.
What goes into a bag to feed the hungry? The basic food items are: peanut butter, canned meat, vegetables, fruit, cereal, soup, macaroni & cheese, canned white potatoes, spaghetti sauce and spaghetti noodles. We also pack a roll of toilet paper and a bar of soap when available.
We welcome all packaged/canned donations. We will pack any kind of soup, fruit, vegetable, soap or toilet paper that is donated, as well as extra items not on the list. Grocery size paper bags are also needed.
Thank you to all who bring food in for the grocery bags that are filled each month. Look in the Sunday
bulletins to see which items are most
urgently needed.

Please take a moment to review the names on our church prayer list. If you know the current recovery status, condition, or needs of any person listed, please advise Pastor Rice or the church office. Thank you to Paul McFadden who delivered food bags to the Homeless Shelter in March.
April’s dinner at the Homeless Shelter is on Sunday, Apr. 26th, at 6:00 pm. The sign-up sheet is posted in the Narthex. We have cut down on the expense of the items needed (less meat, more casseroles) or have divided the donations into smaller units to make it financially easier for you to donate. Please check to see how you can help.
OUTREACH NEWS… HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO BE A BLESSING TO OTHERS
We at Grace have volunteered to provide one meal per month — the 4th Sunday of each month — and need volunteers to provide the meal and to deliver it to the Friends of the Homeless of Tuscarawas County which is a group of concerned citizens from various churches and social service agencies in the county who have recognized the need to assist persons experiencing homelessness. The residents eat dinner at 6:00 each evening. All tableware is provided by the shelter, and they ask that if we are just dropping the food off to bring it in disposable pans.
If you are unable to deliver your portion of the meal, please contact someone else who has signed up to deliver food.
Let’s continue to work together as the body of Christ and serve our brothers and sisters in need.
New sign up sheets are posted for the April’s meal to the homeless shelter. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the narthex.

Replenishing the Children’s Worship Bags Our worship bag continues to be a blessing to children and parents in our worship each week! Most of the 10 bags are used every Sunday. The bags serve as a way for parents to have their young children in worship with them while they get a chance to worship. We will be purchasing new books, toys and crayons for the bags soon. If you would be interested in providing money for the purchase of these items you may make a donation by placing it in a special offering envelope with worship bags written on it. If paying by check please remember to write Children’s Worship Bags in the memo line. Thank you for continuing to support this ministry.
