1 Enrolment Information 11 About the Saturday School of Community Languages

Saturday School of Community Languages (SSCL) is a Department of Education secondary

school and the largest provider of face-to-face languages education in NSW SSCL offers

courses in 26 languages to students wishing to study their background language There are 15

SSCL centres 13 based in the Sydney metropolitan area one in Wollongong and one in

Newcastle

Students at SSCL follow the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) syllabuses Courses

are offered for the Record of School Achievement (RoSA) and the Higher School Certificate

(HSC) All Year 12 languages are Board Endorsed Courses that can contribute towards an

HSC There are no fees associated with enrolling at SSCL

Classes are held every Saturday morning during the school term Years 7-10 classes run for two

hours Years 11 and 12 classes for three hours and Year 12 extension classes for an additional

hour and 15 minutes Unless otherwise advised classes start at 830am

Students do not need to wear a uniform but should be dressed appropriately at all times

There are no canteen facilities available at our centres and students are not allowed to leave

the school grounds for the 15 minute recess break (held for students in Years 11 and 12) so they

are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks

Students seeking to enrol must meet the following eligibility criteria

bull The student must be enrolled in a public or non-government secondary school or

TAFE college at the time of study at SSCL

bull The language requested must be the studentrsquos heritage background community

language

bull The language requested must not be available for study at the studentrsquos weekday

school in the year requested (Exemption from this eligibility requirement may be made

in special circumstances at the discretion of the Principal SSCL)

Students seeking to enrol in Stage 6 Asian [Language] in Context (formerly Heritage)

courses must also satisfy NESArsquos eligibility requirements

bull The student must not have had any formal education in a school where the language of

the course requested is the medium of instruction beyond the year in which the

student turns 10 years of age (typically Year 4 or 5 of primary education)

Note Speakers of dialects and variants of a language (for example Hokkien Cantonese

Shanghainese) are considered to be speakers of the standard language (for example

Mandarin)

Students that do not meet the eligibility requirements for Language in Context courses are

advised to apply for the [Language] and Literature course

Please read the following section carefully before submitting enrolment forms

To submit a new enrolment application for a language course in 2020 please follow these

steps

1 Complete the application

bull Download the enrolment application form and any appendices required

bull Fill out the form(s) electronically

bull Print the form

bull Complete the student and parentguardian signatures

2 Submit the application to your weekday school

bull Return the form to your weekday high school principal or SSCL Coordinator

bull Students that are not Australian citizens must also provide their school with a copy

of their passport and visa or ImmiCard

bull The principal must accept the declaration by signing and stamping the form

3 Email the application before Friday 29 February 2020

The schoolrsquos SSCL Coordinator is responsible for submitting the completed application

bull Scan the enrolment form and name the file

lsquoStudentrsquos full name - Year Language - Centre requestedrsquo

bull Send the form and any appendicessupporting evidence to

saturdaycl-hschooldetnsweduau with the subject title

lsquoStudentrsquos full name - 2020 enrolment ndash Year Languagersquo

14 Deadlines for new and continuing enrolments

New applications must be sent to SSCL before 13 December 2019 (Week 9 Term 4)

Applications received by this date will be processed and weekday schools advised in time for

students to commence on Saturday 1 February 2020 (Week 1 Term 1) Year 7 applications

should be made as early as possible in 2020 so students can begin their studies

Applications for all years close formally on 22 February 2020 although late applications are

accepted throughout the year on a case by case basis subject to the conditions on page 9

Students who are already enrolled at SSCL and wish to continue their enrolment in 2020 must

complete Appendix 5 (available at Centres) to confirm their continuation This form must be

submitted by the end of the 2019 school year Students who are already enrolled at SSCL in

Year 10 and are applying for a Year 11 Language in Context course (Chinese Japanese or

Korean) must complete a new application form and attach Appendix 2

15 Late applications

Subject to available places late applications may be made throughout the year for students

in Years 7 8 and 9 Consideration will be given throughout the year to students in special

circumstances or where there is a student welfare issue

Late applications for students in Years 10 11 and 12 (received after 22 February 2020) must be

accompanied by Appendix 1 and documentary evidence of prior learning as required Late

applications for students in these years will be assessed by the Principal SSCL and determined

on a case by case basis Situations in which a late application may be accepted include

bull if the student is a refugee

bull if the student has completed the preliminary units or the preliminary equivalent

bull if the student is a recent arrival into the country (within the last two months)

bull if the student has recently transferred out of an Intensive English Centre (within the

last two months)

16 Remote students

Study via distance education may be provided by SSCL if a student

bull lives at least two hours from a centre where the language is taught or

bull is suffering from an illness or disability or other welfare concern which prevents them

from attending regularly

Where enrolments are insufficient to form a class remote access may be available to another

centre with the language SSCL will not accept remote students on the basis of them having

other Saturday commitments such as sport or tutoring

Remote students must have access to a camera microphone and a computer with internet

connection for video conferencing each Saturday

17 International students

SSCL adheres to the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) framework which

promotes quality education and consumer protection for international students The following

conditions of enrolment apply to all international students

Attendance and course requirements

1 Must attend a minimum of 80 of all scheduled classes

2 Must provide a doctorrsquos certificate for any absences of three days or more The

doctor must be a registered medical practitioner For any absences of one or two

days students must provide a letter of explanation by a guardian (or if the student

is over 18 years they can provide their own written explanation)

3 Must meet course progress requirements

If attendance requirements are not met students may be reported to the Department of

Immigration and Border Protection unless there are compassionate or compelling

circumstances

Accommodation and welfare requirements

1 Must maintain approved accommodation support and welfare arrangements if

under 18 years of age

2 Approved guardian for students under 18 years must notify SCCL of residential

address within seven days of arriving in Australia and notify any changes of

address and contact details within seven days Students over 18 years must also

notify SSCL of any changes

18 Advanced Standing and Accelerated Progression

Advanced Standing Recognition of Prior Learning is a strategy for students who have

already achieved the outcomes of a previous year or stage Students must be able to

demonstrate that they are able to achieve the anticipated outcomes for the point at which

they wish to enter a course These students do not have to complete the work related to the

year for which advanced standing is granted for example

bull a Year 10 student advancing into a 200 hour Year 10 language without having done

100 hours of Year 9 in that subject

bull a student advancing into Year 12 without having done the Preliminary course in that

subject Note that in this case the student is not awarded 2 units for the Year 11

course not undertaken

Students seeking to advance into a course at SSCL should fill out Appendix 4 and attach this to

their 2020 Enrolment Form Students seeking to advance into year 12 should fill out Appendix

3

Advancement ahead of cohort (acceleration) is a separate strategy from Advanced Standing

It only takes place when it is in the educational interests of the student SSCL follows the

acceleration policy set out by NESA Students should not seek acceleration based solely on

fluency in a language In all cases SSCL will work in collaboration with the weekday school

principal and supervisor to determine if the student is eligible and suitable

students When applying please ensure the necessary evidence is provided including

bull NAPLAN results

bull School Counsellorrsquos report on the studentrsquos social and emotional readiness to

accelerate

bull letter of recommendation from the home school Principal supporting the request

and advising if it is in the educational interests of the student to accelerate and that

it is prompted by the studentrsquos own high motivation

bull secondary school reports from Year 7 onwards

18 Informing the school community

Weekday school principals are asked to inform their school communities about the

opportunities for students to study their background language and to provide the information

to all students from Year 6 to Year 12 when they are undertaking orientation programs or when

required to make subject choices

In 2020 SSCL is providing weekday schools with information flyers to distribute to parents

caregivers and prospective students If you would like to request some flyers for your school or

should you require more please do not hesitate to contact us

Weekday schools are also asked to make enrolment information available on their schools

website and include the name of their SSCL Coordinator so that students and parents may be

directed to them

It is the responsibility of the weekday school to ensure that students are entered with NESA for

100 hours 200 hours preliminary and Higher School Certificate courses studied at SSCL

When entering students through Schools Online weekday schools must enter both a centre
