June 17 - 20, 2020 Workshop Overview Join us for a three-day professional development printmaking workshop, open to all K-12 art teachers, featuring guest artist D.L. Simmons, Assistant Professor of Drawing and Printmaking at UT Tyler. The workshop will feature: Artist talk by D.L. Simmons Demonstrations of printmaking techniques and materials Critiques with the guest artist Discussion of environmental, health and safety best practices for studio disciplines An exhibition of artwork created by the workshop participants The workshop will take place in the studio art facilities at the University of Texas at Tyler main campus, located in Tyler, Texas. Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Participants will receive a letter to verify completion of the workshop and will earn twenty (20) continuing professional education (CPE) credits. Guest Artist Information Biography D.L. Simmons received his MFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University and graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Studio Art. He also studied printmaking at Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland. D.L. is a printmaker using traditional and multiple processes that incorporate intaglio, relief, serigraph and digital processes. Currently, D.L. lives in Texas and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Texas at Tyler. Previous appointments include: Assistant

ArtistStatement

Myworkisadirectresponsetomylifeexperiences.Althoughmyworkdoesnotdirectlyreproduceanyspecificevents,theimageryismadeupofobjectsandiconsthatreflectandgivewaytonarrativevignettesabstractedfrommylife.Iusemypersonalexperiencesasalenstoexploreculturalcontextanddevelopvisualconceptsasmetaphor.Forme,itisimportantthattheoutsideworldisnotsimplyviewedandrepresentedbytheartist,butratherthatisitviewed,assimilated,andinterpretedbytheartist.Whentheobjectsandimagesfromoureverydaylivesminglewithnuancesofmemoryandforgetting,thefamiliarbecomessaturatedwithmultiplelayersofmeaningfromtheseeminglymundanetothelarger-than-lifemetaphoricalsignificance.Lookingatthelossofthesouthernoraltraditionsandstorytelling,Iammotivatedbytheneedtopreserveandtoexplorethosefundamentalexperiencesthatcreatethewellspringofmyculturalexperience,thatintangiblemysticismofculturalexperienceandidentity.Myworkisthephysicalembodimentofanemotionalexperienceasaninvestigationoftheself,toldinthemediaofprintmakingandtheprocesstherein.Asawhole,myworkisameansformetounderstandmypersonalemotionalrelationshiptosociety’sactivityinrememberingandforgetting.Myworktransformsasharedpersonalexperienceintoanemotionallytangiblevisualobject.Iworkthroughtheprintmakingprocesstodevelopabodyofworkthatmakessenseofemotional,cultural,andphysicalexperiences.
