2020 Spring Application - Expanding Orchards Gateway Greening’s Giving Grove 2020 Application for Orchard Materials Page 1 2020 APPLICATION FOR ORCHARD MATERIALS GATEWAY GREENING’S VISION AND MISSION We envision a St. Louis Region where people are connected to the land, to their food, and to each other in deeply rooted resilient urban communities. We pursue this vision by working to educate and empower people to improve their communities through gardening and urban agriculture. WHAT THIS APPLICATION IS FOR AND HOW IT WORKS This application is for Gateway Greening Network Projects (gardens and/or orchards) to request to work with Gateway Greening’s Giving Grove program to assist with consultation and design and/or to receive our recommended disease resistant, locally adapted fruit and nut crops for your project. Here at Gateway Greening’s Giving Grove we work hard to identify the best fruit and nut crops for St. Louis that require the least work with the most yield. Once we receive your completed application we will contact you to schedule an in-person site visit to discuss the best options for your project based on your group’s interests and your site’s characteristics. If you have a workable site and decide to go forward, Gateway Greening will work with your group to create a site plan and then procure necessary plants once a final site plan is agreed upon. Gateway Greening staff will create a site plan based on the discussion. Once a site plan your group likes is agreed on Gateway Greening will procure plants and a planting day will be scheduled. On the planting day Gateway Greening staff will bring the plants and necessary tools and instruct all members of the group how to plant their fruit and nut bearing plants and we will plant the orchard together. We also provide long term support through education on fruit tree maintenance, site visits, consultation, and access to appropriate sprays and tree training materials. Old Ferguson West, Fall 2017

COST The only cost associated with this process is the purchase cost of the plants themselves. The costs vary from $15-$50 per plant based on the type of plant (e.g. tree, shrub, vine, cane fruit). This charge is just to cover the cost to purchase, ship, and nursery them. There is NO cost for any other of the services provided as part of this process. There is no cost for any of the staff time involved in meeting, consultation, design, plant procurement, transportation, or labor. There is also no continuing cost or membership cost of any kind required for this process. SCHOLARSHIPS We never want limited resources to prevent groups being able to do the important work they are doing to strengthen their communities. Due to this we have secured funding for a limited number of scholarships to reduce the costs by 50% or 90% based on need. Once the final plan is agreed upon you can then apply for a scholarship by emailing or calling Dean (contact information below). ELIGIBLITY Applicants must be an established Gateway Greening network project (garden and/or orchard) that has NOT received an orchard award within the past calendar year. Note: A Gateway Greening network garden that has not received orchard supplies as of yet IS eligible for orchard plants through this application.
