Beth Emeth 2019/20Almost overnight in the middle of March, life at CBE and everywhere completely changed.

We were told to observe “social distancing” to fight COVID-19. While we might not have been able to be together physically as usual, our CBE community remained con-nected and intact when our relationships became perhaps more important than ever.

Beth Emeth clergy and staff went above and beyond to build a virtual CBE and, of course, were there for members of our community who sadly suffered losses during this period. We were fortunate to have already had Live Stream up and running, thanks to the generosity of Marge and Barry Hollander.

While attendance in the building was curtailed, Shara Siegfeld, director of The Einhorn Center for Jewish Education, with the help of teachers and staff, created a virtual school and developed creative and fun lessons to engage students and stay connected.

Budget Highlights

l No increases in Annual Commitment or Religious School tuition.

l Only 51% of operating revenue is supported by Annual Commitment.

l 17% of our operating revenue comes from members who pay above Annual Commitment, Annual Underwriting Gifts and other donations and fund raising.

l In accordance with the endowment policies, endowment fund transfers comprise 16% of total operating revenue. Endowment fund balances to be transferred are calculated on the calendar year-end balances as of 12/31/19 and using a lookback of the average of 20- rolling quarters to determine the percentage that can be brought over. This ensures that the impact of both significant gains and losses is mitigated in the transfer calculation.

l Operating expense increases in Fiscal Year 2020-21 are related to contractual salary increases. These amounts are partially funded by a fund available for, and board designated for, this use.

* Donors to the Yom Kippur Appeal and The Tree of Life are recognized each year in the Bulletin.

Message from CBE’s President Andrew Safranko

We are certainly living in uncertain and unprecedented times. It is during this time that we need our Beth Emeth family and community even more. I watched Shabbat services via the live stream on Friday, March 20, the first Friday where services were held with clergy only and was taken aback at first by the sight of the empty Chapel. As Rabbi Shpeen, Cantor Schechtman and Al Fedak conducted services, a sense of calm, peace and normalcy came over me. This feeling of community was solidified as, throughout the weekend, I received many calls, emails and Face-book messages from many congregants stating that participating in services and praying with our clergy provided the comfort that they needed. Now, more than ever, the importance of community is paramount. We thank everyone for their commitment, dedication, devotion and membership to our beloved congregation.

Andrew Safranko, President [email protected]

SISTHERHOOD MAH JONGG

Rabbi and Cantor recorded comforting messages and music, which was posted to our Facebook page and shared with our membership. Sisterhood continued their online video conferencing program Shabbat is Calling featuring programs such as "Making the Shabbat D'var Torah Accessible To Everyone,” facilitated by Shara Siegfeld, Director of the Einhorn Center for Jewish Education. Beth Emeth’s Soup Kitchen continued to provide  much needed sustenance, with all  donations to Social Action Tzedakah Fund going to help cover the increased costs to changing to take out meals.

Website and weekly emails were kept current and filled with great con-tent by Program Director, Deb Sokoler. A Family Tzedakah Project was organized to write cards / be pen-pals to residents of Daughters of Sarah and The Massry Residence who are more isolated at this time.   Staff including building, cemetery and administrative, all kept things run-ning well and as normal and possible. The Board of Trustees, led by CBE President Andy Safranko, along with many Past Presidents and staff, made calls to our members to keep them engaged and informed.
