In her first season at the helm, the Mocsfinished third in the Southern Conference, arepeatfromthepreviousseason,andadvancedto the semifinal of the SoCon Tournament.The Mocs posted an overall record of 14-17and went 8-6 in league play. Chattanooga’snon-conferenceschedulewasoneof themostgrueling in the nation with a non-conferencestrengthofscheduleratingoffive.UTChostedLouisville,aNo.1seedintheNCAATournamentand N.C. State, led by former Mocs’ headcoach Wes Moore who guided his team to21 consecutivewins to start the season. TheWolfpackreachedarankingashighassevenintheAPTop25PollandearnedaNo.3seedinthe NCAA Tournament. TenofChattanooga’s15non-conferencefoesearned postseason berths and two from theSoCon received bids. Eight of UTC opponents,including Mercer, advanced to the NCAATournamentwhileFurmanhighlightedfourfoesintheWomen’sNIT. Lakelyn Bouldin was named to the All-ConferenceTeamforasecondyearandearnedher second postseason recognition. She wasselectedtotheSoConAll-TournamentTeamforherperformanceintheMocs’twogames.EboniWilliamswasnamed theSouthernConference
FreshmanoftheYear,UTC’sfourthall-timeandfirstsinceHeatherDykesinthe1998-99season. In her time as an assistant coach at UTC,Burrows servedon staffs for bothWesMooreandJimFoster.Duringthatspan,UTCadvancedtothepostseasonseventimes,withfivetripstotheNCAATournament followingfive SouthernConferencetitles. TheMocspostedanimpressiveoverallrecordof 189-68 (.735) and a 112-22 (.836) mark inleagueplayduringhertimeasanassistant. TaylorHall(2010-14)becamethefirstplayerin SoCon history to earn league Player of theYear, Female Athlete of the Year, DefensivePlayer of the Year and Tournament MostOutstandingPlayerinthesameseason. Jasmine Joyner (2013-17) earned back-to-backSoConDefensivePlayeroftheYearhonorsand was named the SoCon Tournament MVPin 2015 and 2017. She finished her career atChattanoogaasthesecondplayertotop1,000pointsand900rebounds,andiseighthall-timeintheNCAAwith436careerblocks. Alicia “Red” Payne became the firstChattanoogaplayertoearnback-to-backSoConDefensive Player of the Year honors (2015,2016) andwas named the SoCon TournamentMostOutstandingPlayerin2016. “Based on our long history of success inwomen’s basketball, I felt it was necessary toconductanationalsearch,”addedWharton.“IwaspleasedwiththequalityofindividualswhowereinterestedinourprogramandKatiewasastrongcandidatefromthebeginning. “Thatbeingsaid,sheclearlydistancedherselffrom an extremely talented pool of coaches.She earned the chance to lead our women’sbasketballprogrambyclearlybeingthepersonforthejob.” A native of Lookout Valley, Katie came toChattanooga in 2000 and was an integralmemberoffourstraightSoContitles.Inhertime
asastudent-athleteatUTC,theMocspostedanoverall record of 102-23 with wins over suchteamsasFloridaState,AlabamaandLouisville.UTC advanced to theNCAA championships allfourseasons. In her senior year, the Mocs posted thenation’s longest active winning streak at 27games that culminated with a first-round winoverRutgers in theNCAATournament. In thatgame,Burrowssankthemostmemorableshotin Chattanooga history, nailing a 30-foot bankshot from the right side to spark a comebackwinovertheScarletKnights. Katie earned a spot as among former headcoach Wes Moore’s Top 10 players in thecelebration of “Moore inMcKenzie, a DecadeofDominance”.Sheranksinthetop10inUTChistoryin3-pointersmade(107)andattempted(315). Prior to her return to UTC, Burrows was acoachand teacheratRinggoldHighSchool forthreeyears.Shetookoveraprogramthathadjustthreewinsintheseasonpriortoherarrival. The Lady Tigers steadily increased theirwintotal ineachofherthreeseasons,culminatinginRinggold’sfirststateplayoffappearancesince1986whentheteamlosttoRossvilleintheClassAAAfinals.
