Winston is committed to a safe and successful return to learning in Fall 2020. We believe that on-campus learning is a key part of the educational experience, so along with numerous federal and state organizations, including the Texas Pediatric Society, we are encouraging students to return to campus in August.

However, we realize the importance of providing learning options for students who are unable to be on campus due to health risks for the student or family.

For that reason, Winston is offering in-person and distance learning options.*

This document outlines Winston’s plans for returning to school in August. The information in this document is subject to change as necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

STARTING SCHOOLIn order to maintain physical distance and other safety protocols, we are transforming our annual Welcome Back Picnic into Welcome to Winston, where new Winston families will meet the teachers and become familiar with campus. Event details will be sent directly to new families.

The first day of school is Monday, August 17th. Our goal is to continue the entire school year on campus, but we will have plans in place should we be forced to adjust. As always, our priority will be the students’ health, safety, and education, and we will communicate any changes as needed.

REUNITING

Page 2

*Families must select their learning option by August 1st via email to their child’s Head of School. Students must commit to the

selected plan for a full 6-week period.

On-Campus LearningStudents will rotate through regular classes and adhere to social distancing guidelines throughout the entire day. Computer and Art classes will take place in core classrooms.

To the fullest extent, classroom materials will not be shared. Until further notice, free time will be limited to individual activities and lockers will not be used.

Distance LearningGrades 3-6 will participate in a regular class schedule via Zoom.

Grades 1-2 will also participate in class via Zoom, but will adhere to a modified class schedule. Further details will be sent in August.

Students will be able to interact with classmates, participate in class discussion, and ask any questions in real time.

All daily assignments and grades will be posted on Google Classroom (which is now also linked with the FACTS platform).

TEACHING & LEARNINGTEACHING & LEARNING | LOWER SCHOOL

*Full size class schedules can be found on the last page of this document.

An email will be sent from Louise Pastorino, Head of Lower School, in late July regarding your family’s choice of distance or on-campus learning. You must reply to that email by August 1st with your selection. Students must commit to the selected plan for a full 6-week period.

This year at Winston, families will have the option of choosing between an on-campus or distance learning option for their children. Regardless of the choice, faculty and administration are doing everything possible to create a “normal” class experience.

Art & PE classes will still take place, teachers will adhere to a regular curriculum, and standard grading procedures will be implemented. Recess will take place, but will be modified to ensure distancing guidelines are followed.

Lower School students will begin the day in their Reading classroom, where attendance and lunch orders will be taken and morning announcements will take place.

LEARNING OPTIONS

Class attendance is mandatory for both on-campus and distance learning.

Every classroom on campus has been reconfigured to ensure students can remain 6 feet apart at all times.

TEACHING & LEARNINGEXTRACURRICULAR & ANCILLARY PROGRAMS

Page 7

FINE ARTSWinston’s new Fine Arts facility

provides the perfect environment for

our students to practice safe protocol.

The building will allow for increased

space and flexible classroom options

(outdoors, auditorium seating, etc.).

The Fine Arts programs, including all

classes, will continue as normally as

possible. Further information will be

provided once school begins.

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAMWe are continuing with plans to conduct Winston’s Extended Day Program. At this time, we are evaluating the structure of the program, including limiting the number of students in the class. More information will come in August.

OTHER EXTRACURRICULARSAll students, regardless of which learning option they choose, will be encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities. Specific club plans for meetings and events will be announced at the start of the school year. Some activities will be limited to on-campus learning.

LUNCHWinston is working with our lunch provider, Cafeteria Services, to develop safe and healthy lunch protocols. Protective shields and single-use products will be used and students will remain 6 feet apart at all times. For Middle & Upper School students, lunch arrival and dismissal will be staggered. Winston’s new facility includes a large, full-service Dining Hall. We plan to start the school year using this space for the lunch program. If necessity dictates, Winston is prepared for students to have lunch in their classrooms.

ATHLETICSSummer sports and conditioning camps took place over the summer and were compliant with all necessary guidelines. These camps allowed our students to stay in shape without putting their health at risk. We fully intend to continue athletics in the fall. Regular PE classes will continue on campus, barring any governmental restrictions. At this time we are still waiting on official guidelines from TAIAO regarding formal competition. We will notify parents once we receive guidance on this issue. During athletic practices and PE classes, students will practice social distancing as recommended, sanitize equipment regularly, and will practice good general hygiene. Specific guidelines will be announced at the start of the school year.

Winston remains committed to our mission of providing a personalized education, regardless of whether the learning takes place in person or online.

We will implement synchronous learning for online and in-person classes this year. This will enable students to participate in class discussions, adhere to regular class schedules, and communicate with teachers effectively.

WINSTON’S UNIQUE POSITIONFor 36 years, Winston has served students who learn differently. Our faculty and administration is uniquely positioned to tackle the educational challenges posed by COVID-19.

We are all in this situation together. Our dedication to educating bright students with learning differences has not changed, and we will continue to push ahead through these difficult times. We appreciate your patience as we have morphed and developed our plans in response to this global pandemic.

We encourage you to follow our social media pages for current

updates and information on upcoming Zoom conversations with our administrative team.

We can’t wait to see you in August!
