DWA – who we are!

DWA – Clear concepts, clean environment These are the goals on which the tasks of the German Asso ciation for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA), in its role as a specia-list technical and scientific organisation, are focused. As a politically and economically independent association, the DWA works to promote research and development. Amongst a membership of 14,000, there are municipalities, institutes of higher education, engineers, public authorities and companies as well as their experts and management. The DWA gives its full support to sustaina-ble water-resources management, has established a discussion forum for ideas and the exchange of opinions and provides expert advice for legislative bodies and policy makers.

NETWORKWe offer specialists a platform for dialogue. Committees, forums and conferences provide scope for contact and exchange. “Members know more” – that’s what DWA stands for.

RESEARCHResearch topics and results are pooled and the transfer to and from practice secured.

CERTIFICATIONInspections and process consultations are also gaining significance in the water and waste sectors. We have defined the proces-ses and assist in their application.

INFORMATIONThe issues of water and waste concern every-body – politicians, citizens, professionals, educators and students. We explain the technology and development in a way that every one understands.

DWA – who we are!

SET OF RulESExperts from all sectors of water-resource management document the “generally acknowledged rules of technology“ and develop from these the DWA Set of Rules. The DWA Set of Rules provides security and orientation in the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of water and waste management facilities. It should be noted that the DIN standards and the Set of Rules of the DWA are of equal importance. The DWA offers a wide range of publications and software that includes those relating to the DWA Set of Rules, the DWA Topics and other specialist books and journals.

TRAINING“Putting practical experience into practice” is the phrase that best describes the DWA’s activities in the training sector. As a technical and scientific association, the DWA is not only the body that lays down the Set of Rules in the business of water management, but it also directly offers high quality education and training programmes. The programmes are made available through-out Germany with the help and support of whichever committees are responsible and directed at specific groups and subjects.

MEMbERSHIPGain all the advantages now by becoming a member of DWA, because then you will have direct access to the most important network for experts, engineers and other people wor-king in water management: · when you are still training or studying, to

get a good start in your chosen profession,· as well as during the whole of your working

life, you’ll be able to keep yourself continu-ally informed.

As a member of DWA you will not only receive information on your field of specialisation. You will also have the opportunity to offer your expert knowledge as a volunteer and make your contribution to the development of the DWA Set of Rules. A particular advantage you will gain from your voluntary work is the opportunity to exchange your experience within the circle of recognised experts. A voluntary position within the DWA is interpreted as a sign of your professional and personal competence – and will offer you the priceless opportunity of making contacts.

INTERNATIONAlGerman experience is in demand from abroad. In addition to the tasks at a natio-nal level, the DWA is becoming increasingly active in professional training and publishing on the international market. We explain the German Water Sector, we give support in knowledge transfer and advice in adaptations and new concepts abroad.

Advisory ServicesDWA enlarges competences in the “capacity development“ field by vocational trainings and support of governmental and non-governmental organisations.

There were and are different long-term engagements, especially with GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) – former GTZ in the fields of standardisation, training systems, certification and associations set up.

Together with Dbu (Deutsche bundesstiftung umwelt – German Environmental Foundation) a number of projects especially for South European countries has been realized supporting know-how transfer in the water sector.

Examples:

GIZ Bangladesh

Training Curriculum Development for WWTPs Operators and Managers

The government of bangladesh puts increasing pressure on industries that are polluting water, air and soil to abide by environmental laws and legislation. It is hard to find employees that dispose of the respective knowledge, information and skills in environmental pollution, here in water pollution by effluent treatment plants. DWA as international training partner assists the local training partners in setting up a training programme for ETP Managers and ETP Operators based on the German training model and approaches.

The implementation, performance and evaluation of the trainings will follow soon.

GIZ Egypt

From mid 2009 on a quality management tool for water utilities was developed by the Egyptian Holding Company for water and waste water (HCWW) and GIZ with the support of the German Water Associations DWA and DVGW (German Technical and Scientific Associ-ation for Gas and Water). The procedure of “Technical Sustainable Management” enables water- and wastewater plants to improve their performance in organizational, safety and operational issues. Since 2010, quite a number of plants were successfully certified in accordance with national standards and requirements. DWA will advise HCWW in the im-plementation of “Technical Safety Management” for utilities all over Egypt and supervise the auditing process until end 2013.

DBU-supported Projects in South-East Europe

The DWA expert dictionary was extended by 7,000 bulgarian and 13,000 Romanian technical terms by ideal and financial support of Dbu.

Technical Online Dictionary Arabterm

The internet based ARAbTERM multilingual terminology database now includes a specialist volume on water technology. This joint publication of the Arab league Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (AlECSO) and the bMZ was executed by GIZ and Goethe institute Egypt with the technical assistance of the DWA. It offers translations of more than 7,000 water-related terms in German, English, French and Arabic and helps to harmonise water-related terminology and develop technical standards and guidelines for the Arab region and beyond. A detailed explanation and diagram are included for each entry, based on DIN and EN definitions. www.arabterm.org

• validity for activated sludge plants of any size (up to now ³ 5,000 total number of inhabitants and population equivalents PT),

• dimensioning temperature for nitrogen removal T = 12° C in accord with the requirements from Appendix 1 of The [German] Wastewater Ordinance (AbwV) (previously T = 10° C), under the assumption of a flexible design of the biological rector,

• integration of dimensioning for excess biological phosphorus removal,

• modification of the denitrification capacity,

• change of the determination of the required oxygen transfer,

• integration of the dimensioning of an aerobic selector,

• option for dimensioning on the basis of the chemical oxygen demand (COD),

• increase of the permitted sludge volume loading rate of secondary settling tanks,

• modification of the designation of partial depths and the determination of the depth of the thickening and sludge removal zone of secondary settling tanks,

• integration of the dimensioning of the sludge removal systems (scrapers) in secondary settling tanks. Explanations on process technology are to be taken from the ATV Manuals “Biological and advanced wastewater treatment “[1] and “Mechanical waste-water treatment” [2]. The figures additionally mentioned in the text refer to the chapters of the manuals.

DWA-Topics Treatment Steps for Water Reuse May 2008, 30 pages The treatment of wastewater for reuse is a practice spread in water management worldwide - and in numerous countries, already today it is an indispensable necessity. Due to the increasing demand for water, the significance of water reuse will continue to increase as essential component of sustainable water resources management. In order to give an overview and support with the selection of suitable treatment techniques for reuse, a matrix with the most varied processes of wastewater treatment has been elaborated and concentrates primarily on the reuse of water for agricultural and urban purposes like irrigation and non-potable water applications.

DWA-TopicsTreatment of Industrial Wastewater and Process Water with Membrane Processes and Membrane Bioreactor TechnologyNovember 2007, 48 pages Membrane processes play a major role in modern industrial water management. From microfiltration to reverse osmosis, from the separation of particles, biomass, oil and grease to disinfection and the retention of colloids and dissolved molecules and ions, membrane processes allow for customized and extensive treatment of industrial process and wastewater, and if applicable, the recovery of resources from the treated water. Often, only the implementation of membrane technology provides the opportunity for economic water circulation or water reuse. This DWA-Topics consists of several parts. Part 1 deals with membrane process per se, i.e. the application of this process step in the separation of undissolved, colloidal or dissolved matter. Part 2 describes the mem-brane bioreactor processes. Thereby, the emphasis is on the process unit, consisting of the biological degradation in the aeration tank and the separation of the biomass by means of membranes. Details are given, in particular, on the requirements and specifics of membrane bioreactors in contrast to conventional activated sludge processes.
