She lobbied businesses and government officials, and on June 19, 1910, the state of Washington observed America's first Father's Day. The celebration gained popularity, but it didn't become a permanent holiday until 1972, when President Richard M. Nixon signed the law designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. The sun's indirect and reflected ultraviolet rays can reach your skin and cause a sunburn. Protect yourself whenever you venture outdoors by remembering these watchwords: slip, slop, slap and wrap. Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses. The American Cancer Society recommends using broad– spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 30 or higher and reapplying it every two hours, especially if you are sweating or in and out of water. Step Out Into Nature Walking is a free and easy form of physical exercise, but taking your steps outside can benefit your mind as well as your body. Researchers say that a walk in a park or other natural surroundings appears to affect the part of the brain that controls negative thoughts and emotions. In a study of people who strolled in a green space, scans showed less activity in that brain region, and the walkers reported fewer worrisome thoughts and improved mental health. Smart and Tasty Salad Tips Light yet filling, salad is a go– to meal during warm– weather months. Healthy additions can enhance the nutrition of a plate of leafy greens. Since they're loaded with nutrients, fill your salad with fresh vegetables. Choose a colorful mix to get the most vitamins and minerals. Get a dose of healthy fat with avocado slices or a spoonful of crunchy nuts or seeds. Pack on protein with a serving of grilled chicken or fish, a hard– boiled egg or a cup of beans. Top it all off with a splash of heart– healthy olive oil and vinegar or black pepper, herbs and lemon for a boost of flavor.
