My family didn’t have much when I was grow-ing up, and I was never able to get anything I wanted. I make avery nice living today, but I spend a tremendous amount of mon-ey. You only live once, and I don’t see the fun in not living life to itsfullest. I see the logic in personal finance articles, but I never pullthe trigger. How can I do what I know I should do, and still live thelife I want to live? — Matt, San Diego

DEAR MATT: I know I’m sup-posed to write 800 words tryingto convince you that you’re beingshort-sighted. I could just conjureup a metaphor about going on a1,500-mile journey without aspare tire or something trite likethat. I should tell you that youmight end up back in your child-hood’s financial reality if youdon’t better manage the re-sources you’ve earned, but I willspare you the violin music andprovide you with actionableadvice.

SURE, I CAN RELATEYour financial behavior strugglesaren’t that di�erent than my nu-tritional behavior battle. Some-times I read fitness magazinesduring layovers at an airport barwhile drinking a beer and eating aplate of nachos. I justify it bywearing a FitBit.

Instead of trying to convince

you to change a behavior that youhave no problem with, I’m goingto hit you with the most clichédpersonal finance advice of alltime. But this time I need you totake the time to look past the ob-vious lesson and dig deeper.

If you’re a seasoned personalfinance reader, then you’re famil-iar with the phrase “pay yourselffirst.” You’ve heard it a milliontimes. If you had a dollar for ev-ery time you’d heard the phrase,you’d spend it. But that’s besidethe point. My job is to get you tounderstand why paying yourselffirst won’t cramp your style.

Pay yourself first is one ofthose age-old idioms that meansboth nothing and everything.Some people hear or read thephrase for the first time, and it’slife changing. For the rest of us,it’s no di�erent than refusing toeat an apple a day.

The phrase is meant to spurwealth accumulation. By not us-ing a portion of your current in-come, you’re able to divert thefunds to grow for use in the fu-ture. It’s pretty simple stu�.

But there’s more to it than youthink.

I’ve always felt saving isn’t

about accumulation. Saving isreally about proving you don’tneed your entire current income.You’re breaking your dependencyupon your income.

Matt, you are fully dependenton your entire income. You’relikely trying to make hay (savemoney) only with what’s left over.

Buying what you need first,quickly turns into buying whatyou want second, and then sav-ings gets the bronze.

It’s called the sweep method,

and it rarely works. The idea isthat you can sweep the moneyyou didn’t spend (if there hap-pens to be any) over to savings atthe end of the month. I’ve cer-tainly seen the sweep methodwork for disciplined individualswho don’t have a consumption is-sue. But I’ve never seen it workfor someone trying to changetheir bad habits. Paying yourselflast does not create healthy newhabits. If you’re looking for freshnew habits, Matt, then you needstructure. The amorphous natureof trying to sweep over an im-measurable amount of forgotten-about spending ammunition, isfruitless.

A SIMPLE SOLUTIONYou need to schedule savings.

The moment your employerpays you, money should flowright into savings. Doing this willdecrease the amount you spend,

the money will accumulate overtime, and you will prevent the im-pending financial disaster onyour horizon. Then, spend what-ever you want.

Personally, I fund my financialpriorities first with every pay-check, then I don’t feel bad aboutblowing the rest. The only wayyou can spend money freely andachieve financial independence isto pay yourself first.

At your current pace, your fi-nancial life will fall o� of a cli�. Ifyour income-consumption per-centage is still 100% at retire-ment age, you will feel the ugliestpangs of failure you could possi-bly imagine.

I’ve seen it happen. It’s awful. Take action right now. Honor

the cliché: Pay yourself first.
