South Australian Baseball League Inc.

It goes without saying that our baseball community has endured some unprecedent times, with the bushfires over Christmas which devastated some of our members livelihoods and property, through to the current pandemic which has shaped the way we live and influenced our personal and professional worlds.

The 19/20 season was one of challenges and rewards for all that played our game, we saw an increase in overall memberships, in part to better recording through an improved registration platform. We welcomed new families at the grassroots entry level and saw some returning to the sport at a social level. We were saddened to say goodbye to some that have shaped our game and influenced where we are today, and our heartfelt condolences go out to those baseball families.

Our game seeks to improve through the continuance of rule and governance refinements, which will better position the sport in general. The Board has once again been focused and supportive of guiding the sport in a direction which will foster and grow. The Board have invested in identifying and building a team off field which will deliver, engage, and provide a range of services to our members.

Since joining the Board in July 2010 as Affiliation Director and then taking up the President’s position in May 2013, I have seen a number of positive changes in our game, from both local and national levels. I have been fortunate enough to be able to have had the time to contribute to the volunteer’s role and even more fortunate to work alongside some talented and dedicated people, who have demonstrated their love and commitment to the game.

Board members, like the late Jim Wilton, Bob Neiswander, Peter Fisher, Ian Campbell, Ron Harvey (OAM), Kevin Shepherdson, Ben Dixon, Jenni Franke, Annie Fidge, Jenny Dunn, Tony Catt, Kyle Smith Karen Phillips, Terry Evans, Andrew Nairn, Lawrie Moore and Mark Brougham. Also, Presidents, Kevin Jennings and Shayne Bennett.

Of course, it’s the staff that do all the heavy lifting of the day to day grind and once again there have been some passionate people, that I have worked with like Paul Begg, Paul Chandler, Trish Hollands, Lorraine Dunn, Derek Slater, Ben Arthur, Andrew Bell, Nyrell Davison, Jessica Sneath, Chrystina Williams, Renae Roach, Laura Bond, Bianca Smith, Drew Samuelson, Neil Poulton, Stuart Millar, Warwick Marks, Matt Williams, Landon Hernandez, Blake Halligan, Ian Reval, Andrew Scott, Chris Adamson, Tyrone Hambly, Lynton Arscott, Eric Balnar, Rowena Trevaskis, Giang Danh, Nathan Davison and Sarah Kelly.

Through this period, there was one constant and that was to develop a home, an identity as such, this was realised when the then Minister Bignell issued a $500,000 grant to Softball SA for the initial stages of workings and feasibility into the West Beach development. On the back of this Diamond Sports SA Inc was formed between Softball SA and Baseball SA. On 14th February 2014, I signed the SA Government deed with the Softball SA Chair to receive a further $3.5M to develop the West Beach site and subsequently with a lot of hard work, Baseball finally had a home. Friday 2nd October 2015 history was made, as the first game was played at the new home under lights between Woodville and Kensington.

The formation of Diamond Sports SA Inc Board meant that I have had a few dedicated people join me in various roles on this Board like, Renae Roach, Shayne Bennett, Mark Brougham, Phil Lounder, Tim Mead and Andrew Nairn.

Keeping a spotlight on our past, our roots, where we have come from is entrusted to a collective of passionate individuals who work at ensuring that this spotlight remains bright. I have been able to learn much from people like Alan Waldron (AM), Ron Chandler, Doug White, Gordon Penhall, Robert Laidlaw, Ron Harvey (OAM), and Phil Burgess. Their work with others of protecting our history largely goes un-noticed and is thankless at times. On behalf of the Board and the baseball members, I say thank you.

Baseball is requiring a great many volunteers in all capacities, from Club to affiliation to associations. It is this commitment season after season that will ensure our game prospers and continues to grow in a competitive market. Thank you to the many who have contributed.

The game on a national level stepped up a gear, and we witnessed new international teams competing for the Claxon Shield. The Giants played a competitive, spirited game with a blend of exciting talented youth and seasoned professionals. Local support was pleasing with a mix of live and online spectators. It was also pleasing to see all national teams now have franchise owners who are collectively committed to providing high level baseball.

Our season was cut short as we know, but I would like to acknowledge all teams that played finals in both Women’s, Juniors and Seniors, and in particular Kensington who was awarded the Div 1 Premiership for 2019/20. Part of the Kensington outfit, Chase Cunningham took out the coveted Capps Medal, a worthy recipient.

Financial overview for the 2019/20 trading year are contained within this Annual Report, however I will outline the following. The League is reporting a $70,565 profit compared to $9,788 in 2019. Income was up 13.8% on last year to $1,233,922 and expenses were also up 9.1% to $1,163,357. The Board invested in a total of $30,349 into West Beach for infrastructure works, i.e. pathways. The Board also sought to purchase outright a vehicle totalling $24,278. Cash in bank shows $171,154 and in the term deposit is a total of $261,565. It is expected that the League will show a loss in 2020/21 season due to the unknown impact that COVID-19 may have on our sport. Throughout the trading period of 2019/20, the League has always remained in a position to pay our debts as and when they fall due.

In closing, I expect that there will be more challenges for our sport to deal with, but I feel confident that we have the ability to see through all variants that we may encounter.

Thank you to all that have contributed and made our game what it is today.

What an exciting year it has been at Baseball SA, one that we will not be forgotten and hopefully remembered for all the positive milestones that we reached throughout the year.

Whilst COVID-19 impacted the final weeks of our 2019/20 season, it certainly did not impact the exciting programs and projects that we were able to roll out prior to the pandemic’s arrival. In the final year of Baseball SA’s strategic plan, we were able to align our operations to strategies outlined in the plan and deliver on key outcomes.

With some internal restructuring early in the year, we were able to set up the dedicated team at Baseball SA effectively to address all needs of the members, clubs, and other key stakeholders. We were committed to improving the communication, delivery of service and overall experience for all members on every level.

Financially, Baseball SA had a fantastic year, reporting a profit of $70,565, largely due to strong financial management strategies and relationship engagement. With the tremendous support from the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing and the Adelaide Football Club, allowing us to undertake capital improvements to the facility.

Competitions and EventsI am pleased to report that we have experienced a fantastic increase in memberships this year, up 34% on the 18/19 season. The introduction of the new database significantly assisted in capturing the correct data. We thank the clubs for assisting us in capturing this data, including the registration of coaches, volunteers, umpires and life members, it is probably the cleanest data we have had in some time and allows for more accurate reporting to the national body and Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing.

This year we introduced a new membership and competition management platform in revSPORT, this has been a huge win from our perspective and from feedback we have received from clubs, it has been equally successful in clubland. With this new system came the new Baseball SA website, which has provided the baseball community in South Australia with a professional new look.

2019/20 saw our competition structure stronger than ever, with record numbers of teams entered across our nine senior divisions and nine junior divisions.

During the 2019/20 season we saw the successful delivery of several competitions and events:

Australian Junior League Championship 17th Australian Masters Games Australian Baseball League 2019/20 U11 Gala night at West Beach Bang Sports – Chinese Youth Camp Junko University Super League Baseball Adelaide – Clippers taking home the cup Super “Girls” League Women’s Allstar and Hit Away games Korean Lotte Giants Spring Training Junior Presentation Night

Participation and DevelopmentParticipation numbers increased dramatically over the course of the year with the increased delivery of Sporting Schools, Baseball5, School Holiday and Super “Girls” League Programs.

We saw an increase in the overall number of schools in which programs were delivered and we are confident that this will continue to grow, especially around the Baseball5 program in schools.

Clubs continue to work tirelessly with the grass roots of our sport, T-ball and we are thankful to the clubs who entered teams into our T-ball competition this year.

The Little League Charter pathway continues to grow, sadly this event was cancelled in April 2020, however we had engaged more regional teams this year than last to participate so we will continue the contact and build strong relationships with our regional centres.

PerformanceSouth Australia continued its progression up the national ladder with two bronze medals at the Australian Youth Championships in January 2020 for the U16 and U18 age groups.

The Open and Youth Women’s teams were selected and training pre COVID-19 and unfortunately their tournament was cancelled. This was extremely disappointing for both teams, especially our youth women as this was the first team to travel to a national event to represent SA. We are looking forward to the future of our female baseball athletes.

HP Manager, Chris Adamson resigned in February 2020, leaving a big hole in our HP program. Baseball SA has now taken the time to redesign the Performance Pathway and are in the process of recruiting for the role. The program will take a new and improved look, offering a solid pathway for both male and female athletes from Emerging Talent, Development, High Performance and Elite.

Governance and LeadershipThrough the directive of our President, Mark Snelgrove, we have continued to review and revise our Playing Rules and Conditions to ensure we meet the needs of fairness and competitiveness within a clear operational framework. This year we have undertaken an extensive review and will look to further engage the clubs as we roll some of the rule refinements out.

Since its April 2018 inception, our Bylaw Review Committee (BRC) continued its review of our rules and again will deliver the updates as the Board signs off on them. We are focused on ensuring we can provide a strong, robust, and clear set of rules to govern our organisation on, which are reviewed in line with our needs. Baseball SA are constantly assessing our own performance as a sport and as such prepared a ´Club Survey’ for all clubs to complete and submit feedback on the year gone by.

Various committees and working parties have been formed to continue to refine our processes and policies. This will aid in creating a strong governance framework to achieve our goals.

Communication and ProfileThe bespoke build of the Baseball SA website by revSPORT provided us with an outstanding platform to improve communications to our members, ensure the member experience whilst perusing the website was seamless and an opportunity to create a library for the storage of strategic documents, policies, procedures, videos, history and key partner links.

The new website has allowed for creative design and ease of distribution of a fortnightly newsletter, an opportunity to showcase milestones and share good news stories, along with allowing members and clubs to search results, stats, and competition information with ease.

Sponsors and partners are regularly supported and acknowledged through the new website, fortnightly newsletters, social media posts and EDM’s, reaching around 4000 members. The engagement we have seen through social media posts has increase 100% on previous years, this is an outstanding result. During 2019/20 Baseball SA signed an agreement with CMI Toyota who supplied a vehicle to assist with the delivery of baseball programs into regional SA. We are grateful for the new partnership and support received from CMI Toyota.

Baseball SA have discussed brand and logo redesign and will look to undertake some research into brand recognition and brand appeal in the new year.

FacilitiesDuring the year, the West Beach Facility received an investment of $75,000 and with Baseball SA able to contribute, we were able to undertake significant upgrades to the baseball diamond and surrounding areas.

Both the Adelaide Angels and West Torrens baseball clubs were under renovation, with new clubrooms and diamonds being constructed. We are looking forward to both clubs playing their home games from their new facilities in season 2020/21.

Baseball SA will continue to work closely with the Office for Recreation Sport and Racing and Baseball Australia in attracting national and international events and opportunities. This will aid in future investment opportunities and major facility upgrades at West Beach to support such events.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors and partners who assist Baseball SA to achieve its strategic outcomes:

Office for Recreation Sport and Racing Baseball Australia Diamond Sports SA CMI Toyota Blackchrome Statewide Super TTO Chartered Accountants JSR Plumbing Last but not least, none of the success we have had this year would be possible without the efforts from the team of dedicated Board and staff. The tireless long hours put in by the Board and staff does not go unnoticed and I applaud and thank them all for their passion, professionalism, and teamwork throughout the year.

Looking forward to another exciting year in baseball ahead.

Despite the season end being interrupted by a pandemic, Baseball SA had a solid year finishing with a surplus of $70,565 ($9,788 surplus last year) against a budgeted deficit of $921. There were many unknowns in this financial year as this was the first budget without any direct Adelaide Giants income/costs. Considerable focus was placed on finance matters, with progress made on cleaning up the Chart of Accounts and Balance Sheet and the outsourcing of the day-to-day finance function to an accounting firm. This in turn saw quicker and more accurate transactions combined with the GM having accounting qualifications, laid solid foundations for Baseball SA to make a range of well-informed decisions. COVID-19 payments provided some assistance to Baseball SA to trade without undue financial pressure, and some significant capital projects following a range of grants added to the strong operational result.

INCOME. This totalled $1.24m up from $1.08m from last year. This was well supported by Memberships with Baseball SA recognising significant registration increases some $150,000 more than 18/19. As reported grant income was also $100,000 up from last year. Events income did suffer due to the cancellation of the State Charter Tournaments and the National Junior Championships (which also saw no costs being incurred).

EXPENDITURE. Total expenditure of $1.16m was up from last year of $1.07m. This was to be expected as increased Membership income saw increased Membership expenses due to a new registration system and process being adopted this year. Payroll also increased by $50,000 due to a range of new projects and effective resourcing being established.

BALANCE SHEET. Baseball SA’s cash position increased over the year to see $433,719 in the bank and in a strong financial position. Significant work was done on Accounts Receivable (money owed to Baseball SA) which saw this reduce from $145,920 to $16,536 which was an excellent result. Property, Plant & Equipment was the other big winner, with Office of Recreation, Sport & Racing grants adding to our facility improvements and the purchase of a motor vehicle to assist in our country clinic programs saw a growth from 18/19 of $2,289 to $97,437 in assets. These programs also benefitted from a fully sponsored car from CMI Toyota.

I would like to thank our GM Sarah Kelly for her outstanding attention to the business and appreciation to the Office of Recreation Sport and Racing for continuing to provide grant program support.

Season 2019/20 saw an organisational restructure bring about some positive change in the area of competitions and member services, in particular, an opportunity to improve Baseball SA’s processes, rules and communication for the betterment of all clubs and baseball as a sport.

The introduction of the brand new revSPORT database was a true highlight of the season and we acknowledge the tireless efforts and support of club volunteers to get the rollout completed. revSPORT has provided for more flexibility in fee setting (for example, Tball and Casual Player payment options), enhanced competition information, delivered phenomenal reporting abilities and has undeniably improved Baseball SA’s administrative processes, upgrading services we deliver to our clubs and members.

Communications between the SABL and the clubs became streamlined, accountable and efficient with the introduction of a club Baseball SA email addresses. We created a user-friendly and far more informative website through revSPORT’s platform which, coupled with the introduction of a more proficient scores recording process, gave us the ability to have all 7 premiership tables accurate and up to date in a timely manner.

Scheduling this season was challenging, as Baseball SA were committed to providing a fair “club and player friendly” schedule. Consistent playing time slots were introduced across all junior divisions and senior divisions 6 and 7 which previously had played at any of the three time slots. Although viewed as almost impossible, Baseball SA ensured that where it could, club teams played after each other at the same ground to promote club unity and aid with bench players amongst other things.

Additional exciting factors that impacted scheduling were the 17th Australian Masters Games, the relocation of Adelaide and West Torrens baseball clubs to West Beach while their grounds were redeveloped and the extended visit from the Korean Lotte Giants to hold their spring training. We also included the first Under 11 Minor League finals series and increased the number of games for the 2018/19 piloted Under 9 Pee Wee League, both of which received positive feedback from clubs.

Teams entered into this season’s competition rose from 194 to 207. Our female competition, in particular, grew by two teams as we opened up registrations for Under 15 female athletes to compete in the Women’s Division 2 League, also creating an ‘all-star’ style exhibition game (Hit Away) for this grade and a Super “Girls” League development program for the younger age group. The future looks bright for the addition of an Under 15 girls’ league!

Retention of players, especially those young athletes moving into senior ranks, required attention. Season 2018/19’s move of Division 3 to Sunday and this season’s relocation of Under 17 Senior League to Saturday afternoon, although for a minority of clubs was an effort to fill, the collection of every club’s best senior players and emerging junior talent playing baseball consecutively encouraged clubs to build their traditional 25 player senior squads to 35 plus, bringing about a more highly developed junior-to-senior player transitioning group. Clubs felt the traditional Wednesday twilight Under 19 Don Rice competition had lost support, and although this season Baseball SA went ahead with a showcase tournament, another key to improving retention will be the introduction of Under 19s into mainstream junior competition. Baseball SA is committed to provide the young athlete the best structure of competition available and is excited about the innovations to come.

With the finals affected by COVID-19, Baseball SA followed the bylaws and awarded premierships to all bar four grades. Congratulations to Henley & Grange for winning the U19 Don Rice League premiership and Sturt for being the undefeated champions in the Women’s Division 2 competition. Our Under 11 Minor League experienced its inaugural finals campaign which saw Southern Districts and Northern Districts win the South and North premierships respectively. Although the awarding of premierships occurred across all other grades, we must acknowledge the efforts each awarded premier displayed to get to the top of the rankings at the time the COVID-19 virus attacked and caused us all to go into isolation. Congratulations to the premiership clubs, coaches, officials and players, these awards will certainly go down in history as unprecedented!

Currently the Competitions Review Committee and Bylaw Review Committee are concluding their reviews towards enhancing our competition structure and ultimately improving the number and development opportunities of all our athletes along with the regulations forming the rules and laws of our game and its administration. Baseball SA looks forward to releasing these plans and documents in the pre-season of 2020/21.

2019/20 was another step forward for both men’s and women’s high performance athletes with several outstanding performances on both a personal and team level.

The 2019 Men’s High Performance Academy saw a continued focus on tool development, specifically arm strength and hitting power (exit velocity). In addition to these focus areas, there was an increased emphasis on more deliberate practice and creating an uncomfortable training environment. A substantial increase in the use of technology, specifically the use of Rapsodo units daily, was seen for the purpose of strengthening strengths, addressing weaknesses and validating our coaches teaching methods.

To achieve these outcomes, a structured throwing and arm care program was once again rolled out, with a large importance placed on throwing volume and intensity whilst maintaining movement efficiency. We had some great results, with the group seeing an average of a 3.12 MPH increase in throwing velocity, a squad wide improvement for the second year running.

From a pitching standpoint, Troy Scoble did an outstanding job. We dove in for a deeper look into their individual pitch profiles, specifically when it comes to spin rate and spin efficiency. This aided in helping the pitchers understand how they could best utilise the weapons in their arsenal and what part of the zone would be the best to attack.

Offensively, deliberate practice was a key focus whilst also enforcing that an uncomfortable training environment was to be maintained in order to continue to progress. To help achieve this, each session would contain a variety of movement sequencing drills, high velocity fastball machines and overhand flips. The latter two were to better prepare the athletes for competition, by simulating the plane and velocity of pitches in a game setting. Every athlete in the program set personal records for themselves in exit velocity, whilst also increasing their average exit velocity and average launch angle, which are all vital factors in the repeatability of a swing in competition.

We also had individuals receive significant accolades in 2019. Kason King was selected in the Under 12 Australian Team which competed at the World Cup in Taiwan. Liam Bull was chosen in a Major League Baseball World Select team which toured the United States and played in the Annual Arizona Fall Classic. Tyson McKee was selected in the Under 18 Australian squad who played in an exhibition series against Canada in the leadup to the World Cup. One individual performance worth noting was that of Jess Maslin, who was out first ever player to have been selected in the Australian Emeralds squad and played against the Japanese National team at the Bendigo Classic.

On the back of our first ever medal at a National competition, 2019 saw the first standalone Women’s High Performance Academy. 12 ladies took part in the program, which ran in 2 blocks over September and October. Block 1 consisted of strength and conditioning, to assist in building a foundation for the baseball specific activities which were to be completed throughout October and into the regular SABL season. A similar blueprint to that of the men’s program was put in place, and some great individual results were recorded. The coaching staff consisted of Craig Handy (offense/defence) and Malcolm Gregg (pitching), who both did an outstanding job of implementing the program and really helping the athletes take another step forward in their overall athletic development.

The 2020 Australian Youth Championships saw both of our teams win bronze medals, which was a great achievement and a testament to the hard work of the athletes and staff. The Under 16 team were led by Andrew Scott, Andrew Sperling and Nick Hutchings, with Jon Barker assisting as the Executive Officer. Under 18 team saw Craig Powell take the reigns of a state team for the first time, whilst being assisted by Stuart Millar and Darren Roberts, whilst Sue Bull served as the E.O. Seeing both teams medal at a National Championships was really special, and shows the upward trajectory we are showing as a state. Jack Higginbotham had an outstanding tournament and was named as the Golden Arm, the best pitcher at the tournament.

Overall, the 2019/20 season was another successful one on a High Performance level. The individual and team results were a testament to the hard work of the staff and the athletes themselves and will hopefully serve as a stepping stone to future development and success. There is a real opportunity to maximize development opportunities for these athletes moving forward, both nationally and on the world stage.

The 2020 Charter season was over before it began due to the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19, which was an unfortunate turn of events as we prepared for our State Charter Tournament. This year we looked forward to the return of Mount Gambier who were going to compete in both Little League and Junior League Charter along with a development team. This was a great result for Baseball SA and proved that with a little help these country regions can and will take part in our state-wide events. Our focus will now be moving into other country regions and continue to build our Charter program within SA.

We are still assessing whether Baseball SA will host a state championship tournament for the year 2020. Baseball Australia have recently announced that no national tournaments in the Charter pathway will go ahead this year due to the COVID-19 virus and borders remaining closed. We have contemplated running a preseason tournament for these teams; however, nothing is final of yet.

2020 saw the introduction of our Super Girls League which was a great success. We had 30+ girls participate in the program which ultimately lead into our first ever Youth Girls State Team being selected. This was an exciting time for the development of girls baseball within SA as we were going to be entering at team that was 100% SA. This campaign also fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the girls did not get a chance to travel and represent our state. The Super Girls program operated over three months and comprised of two main training blocks. The focus behind this program was participation and getting more and more girls on the field playing baseball. Trainings comprised of the fundamental skills associated with baseball along some advanced skills and drills for the older girls that were more advanced. All in all the program was a huge success, the girls loved the program and we took huge steps in the right direction for the development of girls baseball. Plans are already in place to make next year’s Super Girls a bigger and better program that will attract more girls and create a stronger foundation for our state team. I must thank a couple of people who helped get this program off the ground, Kristen Venning and Jack Wade. Both played massive roles getting this program going and the girls were very appreciative of everything they did for them.

As we look to the future, a major push into the country areas will be the next step for the development of our Charter program. We aim to get a fifth team participating in our State Charter Tournament and this will come from outside of Adelaide – ideally the Riverland or Port Pirie regions. This is an ongoing process and we hope to have a development team from this region for the 2021 season.

I have been in the Sports Development Officer role now for 10 months. Starting this role was challenging as I was coming into a brand-new sport that I didn’t have much knowledge or experience in. However, I was confident with the extensive experience in schools I had with various sporting organisations that I would succeed in this role.

One of the first projects I was given was the integration of WBSC’s new product, Baseball5 into our existing programs. Not knowing much about baseball, this became the perfect project for me as it allowed me to learn the rules of Baseball5 which made it easier for me to transition into traditional baseball. Interest in Baseball5 over the past 10months has increased due to two local junior tournaments, its introduction into multi-sports days with ACHPER and Catholic School Expos, its inclusion into the Sporting Schools Program for primary and secondary schools and a Baseball v Softball showcase which will hopefully lead into a social competition held at West Beach.

Sporting Schools is one of the main focal points of my role which I am genuinely perfectly suited for as one of my passions is to work with kids in sport where I can encourage more physical activity leading to increases in sport participation. During my first two terms working with the Sporting School program (Term 4, 2019 and Term 1, 2020) 32 schools chose Baseball5 and T-ball as their sport. This was an increase of more than 100% from the previous year (Term 4, 2018 and Term 1, 2019). It was estimates that Baseball SA reached approximately 4,000 student which was the most in the country for that period.

2020 has been an interesting time in relation to COVID-19 and the affect it has had on my role within schools. Unfortunately, when COVID-19 hit school clinics in the first and second school terms were cancelled due to government social distancing and isolation restrictions. However, this allowed me to focus on two brand-new products in the digital space. The creation of a podcast, The Change Up, and implementation of an Esports competition utilising MLB The Show20 on Playstation4, created a new avenue of engagement for our baseball community.

With the aim to distribute our podcast on as many streaming services as possible, we utilised the online platform Buzzsprout which enabled us to upload our podcast on Google Podcast, Apple Podcast and Spotify. The first season of The Change Up saw 8 episodes with guests spanning from club presidents, umpires, coaches, college players to Australian representatives.

Growing up playing video games, the Esports phenomenon intrigued me so being given the unique opportunity to implement a Baseball SA league was an exciting prospect. The first competition had 16 participants from 11 different clubs, 9 from the SABL and 2 from Winterball clubs. These participants represented their clubs in a double elimination tournament which resulted with Tom Wickens (Henley & Grange Baseball Club) being crowned as Baseball SA’s inaugural Esports champion.

I am excited about the future at Baseball SA and I can’t wait to see these programs develop and grow into bigger and better competitions.

It has been a huge year in the marketing and events space with the increase of our electronic communications and the launch of our new website, but also in terms of the challenges we have all had to face.

While COVID-19 has thrown a spanner into all our lives, I am so proud of the Baseball SA team and the way we continue to deliver to the Baseball community during these difficult times. Even though we were forced to cancel all finals games, state and national tournaments, and school holiday camps during the April school holidays, we developed alternative ways to engage with our community and celebrate the 2019/2020 season.

Our flexibility and adaptability was put to the test during the ever-changing environment we faced toward the end of the season. With the government restrictions being updated nearly every week, our plans required constant adaptation. This particularly affected the annual Capps Medal presentation. This year marked our first virtual awards, presented on our social media channels and YouTube over a few evenings, which tested our ability to adapt in the ever-changing environment. While we wished this prestigious event could be held as usual, this was not to be. We thank our event sponsors TTO Chartered Accountants and Adelaide Jewellery Repair Specialists for their continued support of the Capps Medal function. We also thank the baseball community for their flexibility and understanding with the adjusted version of this event and look forward to welcoming everyone back next year to celebrate the 2020/2021 season and our best and fairest players in person.

While it is very easy to focus on the changes and challenges we have faced due to the pandemic, it is important to remember the fantastic season we had prior to the virus.

This season marked the launch of Baseball SA’s new website and database through revolutioniseSPORT. Months of work went into this development and built, in conjunction with the great team at revSPORT, and we have been thrilled with the result. The new system has given our website new life, is easier to navigate, and has provided us with access to new communication tools, such as our fortnightly newsletter.

In the lead up to the 2020/2021 season, we will be performing a full website audit to ensure all information is consistently current and accurate and provided in the best possible format for the baseball community on both computer and mobile devices.

Following the internal staff restructure and results from last season’s review, one of our main focusses this season has been communication. We have made a huge effort to increase communications via our social media platforms, website, newsletters and emails, ensuring our community is well informed and has access to resources.

This season saw the successful delivery of another fantastic Super League Baseball season, Australian Masters Games, Women’s All Star and Hit-Away games (including a women in sport celebration), Junior Presentation in a brand-new format, as well as welcoming the Lotte Giants (Korea), Bang Sports (China) and Japanese Universities.

COVID-19 has allowed us the time and creativity to find new ways to engage our community. Our usual school holiday programs were not to be, so we developed these into a series of skill specific videos, ‘Backyard Baseball’, along with a 4 week at home training program encouraging athletes to stay active in the safety and comfort of their own home. Both of which remain available on our website under the programs tab.

We developed a podcast series, ‘The Change Up’, which saw an 8-episode first season, discussing anything from college baseball, the challenges faced by our gameday officials, to how our athletes and league were continuing baseball life under the shadow of COVID-19. Thank you to all our hosts and guests that assisted making the series such a success. We look forward to making this a regular part of our program delivery with season two planned in the coming months.

We also moved into Esports using the PlayStation 4 game “MLB The Show 20”, which has shown success and will be moving into a season two shortly.

Planning for the 2020/2021 season has already started and we are very excited to be bringing many new programs and tournaments to Adelaide, including fantastic growth with Baseball5.

Baseball after COVID-19 is looking very bright for South Australia and I am very excited to be part of it.

In the second year of the Super League we saw some big changes in the way of rules. This was an attempt to speed up games and create a more enjoyable product that attracted viewers. The changes that we made were:

- Each new inning began with runners on first and second base- Pitch count of 30 pitches (no inning restriction)- 90-minute game times

The result to these new rules saw higher scoring games where offense became the selling point. We also shortened the games and emphasised speed up rules between innings to maximise game times and produce a fast-flowing product with little down time.

The 2019 Super League champions were the Clippers. Right from day one, the Clippers proved to be too strong boasting a combination of powerful offense with a very strong pitching rotation making them the deserving winners.

The awards for the 2019 season were the following:

MVP- Austin Gallagher (Kensington Baseball Club Import)Golden Arm – Thomas Fitzgerald (Kensington Baseball Club Pitcher)Dangerous Bat – Austin Gallagher (Kensington Baseball Club Import)

Gallagher had a great season with a .583 batting average with 8 runs scored and 11 RBIs, A very strong return for a 6-game season.

Fitzgerald was dominant on the mound for the Wasps, Thomas posted a 0.90 ERA with a win-loss record of 2-0 after 10 innings pitched. Thomas also added 11 strikeouts to his stat line.

Super League Baseball will be returning in 2020 and will continue to strive for the best possible product we can produce with the talent in South Australia.

The Baseball South Australia (BSA) History / Heritage Committee was initiated by the Board in 2011 for the purpose of collecting and managing the history and donated memorabilia, and heritage items relating to baseball in South Australia.

Since the BSA last Annual General Meeting the Heritage Committee has been reformed to be a progressive committee with additional new members invited to join to organise and compile the history of baseball in South Australia, and in the long term to facilitate a museum on site at West Beach.

The Board has also provided an annual budget for communications to all persons as well as funding for the occasional cost of heritage items.

The Committee meets monthly and is also responsible for the initial recommendations of nominations prior to Board approval for:

Baseball SA Life Membership Baseball Australia Life Membership Baseball Australia Hall of Fame Sport SA Hall of Fame Sport SA Annual Awards BSA Hall of Fame

Each member of the Committee has been delegated and responsible for the following portfolios:

Chairperson/ BA Hall of Fame Delegate/Giants Alumni/Foundation Ron Harvey Secretary/ Treasurer / Umpires Peter Fischer Country Baseball Greg Bradshaw Scorers / Women’s Baseball Enza Henty Claxton Shield Brian Cakebread Data Researcher Phil Burgess BA Hall of Fame Delegate /Historian Robert Laidlaw Museum Gordon Penhall

Part of our new communications initiative is the commencement of a Facebook page and in the future articles will be included from time to time in the BSA monthly newsletter as well as direct communication with all clubs and affiliates for donations and the purpose of the committee.

Our biggest program is the introduction of a new website attached to the BSA site where a link will be supplied for the Heritage Committee website.

It is hoped that in the years to come all interesting items with be up loaded and form a platform for all interested persons to get to know the history and heritage items in South Australia.

We will be introducing an email on our website which will give all interested persons direct contact with the committee for items of interest etc or donations.

As mentioned above, the BSA Hall of Fame formation is in its final stage of implementation and after approval by the Board, available criteria and nomination forms will be on our website or the BSA site under “Our Committees”.

What a different season we have all been through, let’s hope the 2020/2021 season brings a more stable outcome for all.

If the trend of previous years continues into the future, we as an organisation will struggle to be able to serve the League.

We unfortunately have been unable to attract the new umpire numbers that require this to occur, so unless we have a massive influx of people willing to see baseball continue into the future with umpires, we will struggle!!

The Tribunal Committee needs to stamp out abuse towards our umpiring fraternity immediately, otherwise our existing group will diminish even further.

To those umpires exiting due to age or work commitments from the top level, I thank you for your service. For your dedication and desire to stay involved with baseball, I applaud you.

Again, thank you to the BUASA Committee members and especially our Secretary, Kym Smith, for their hard work throughout the season.

After four years in the role of Chairman of BUASA, I have decided to step down and pass the baton on to someone within the umpiring fraternity to move us forward into the future.

NA very big thank you to all scorers across all the junior and senior grades who donated their time to support their teams and clubs. Baseball can’t be played without scorers and the dedication shown by all is amazing. Well done.

COVID-19 caused disruption to all grades with the finals being cut short. It was disappointing for all teams and scorers alike that the season could not be completed. Obviously, it was the correct decision with all Government agencies recommending the isolation and distancing measures.

SABSA undertook a big training push before the start of last season. Thanks to the Glenelg Baseball Club for the use of their rooms and to all SABSA members who gave their time to run the training sessions. Training was undertaken by thirty-five participants and resulted in ten new level 1 and five new level 2 accreditations being achieved.

SABSA was represented at the Junior Nationals in January by Enza Henty and Laura Mosel but unfortunately the Open Women’s and Youth Women’s National Tournaments, which Michael Phillips had been selected to score, were cancelled. The Schoolboy’s that was to be held in Lismore was similarly cancelled.

We initiated a Facebook page this past season to try and extend our coverage across the baseball community. This was very successful with the page getting many hits during finals and on Div 1 game days.

This season at least one game per round was scored live on the SABSA website. All Div 1 finals games (that were played) were scored live with large number of hits on our site during these times. All minor round games were requested to be uploaded by the day after the last round was completed. This was to assist with team of the year selection and trophy winner selection. This was achieved due to a concerted effort by those responsible for game entry. Great work by all IT scorers.

SABSA is using some old (and tired) laptops to score the Div 1 games to the website. BSA applied for a grant on our behalf to get some funds to purchase iPads so we can transition to GameChanger. Unfortunately, this grant was unsuccessful. As a result, we will have to make the technology last another year. Six iPads would be the minimum required to allow SABSA to move across to GameChanger. GameChanger is the program that BA is using for all National tournaments and has also been adopted by other state’s scoring associations. Sponsorship would need to be obtained to raise the required funds to progress our IT entry and the use of GameChanger.

In conclusion, thank you to everyone who has made a contribution this season in all capacities. A big effort has seen another successful year of scoring.

Once again the theme in Country Baseball is junior baseball and the promotion of baseball in the country areas. All centres work extremely hard in promoting the game with limited resources and workforce, which sounds like the metropolitan clubs, but unfortunately the country centres are 100’s kms away from Adelaide.

SACBA Management Committee normally meet a couple of times a year plus have email or phone meetings but due to the virus shutdown nothing has happened since the end of the season, with only Riverland able to complete the final series. Sunraysia, which has their season during the winter, have had to cancel their competition.

On a brighter note the 44th Country Championships were held on the October long weekend with Mt Gambier winning the championships. Unfortunately the number of teams were low with Whyalla not attending due to major concerns with their association. The SACBA committee once again wishes to thank the support we get from the Umpires Association which has been a long association.

The management committee were to address the junior programs at our meetings this year, but like most items have been put on hold due to the virus shut down. To be addressed are the championships only to have an Under 15 competition with Under 17 players playing in the senior competition and/or what is best for the junior players. Women’s Baseball was also high on the agenda, but like most things everything has been put back by 6-12 months.

The AGM was also held on the long weekend of October with the incoming committee voted in: President Sean Horrigan Vice President Andy McClean Secretary Greg Bradshaw Committee Paul Steff (Pt Pirie) Damien Pietuch (Whyalla) Brendan Markwick (Riverland) Nick Carroll (Sunraysia) Kyall McClean (Mt Gambier)

The Executive Committee are to have a meeting at the end of June to discuss the Country Championships this year. The main components to the discussion will be the availability of players and will other winter sports interfere with the commencement of the centres seasons as players may still be playing winter sports. Also the employment, financial and family impact it will have on players travelling to Adelaide. If cancelled this would be disappointing as this year is 50 years since the first Championship was held and in March this year we were going to prepare for a large celebration of 50 years of Country Baseball.

This year’s National Youth Tournament took on a different format moving to an 18-player roster and playing a six-game preliminary round before a final 1 v 2 or 3 v 4 medal game, and also having to travel to different venues to play games. So, it was a change in game plan from let’s make the top 4 then tackle the finals to every game counts to finish as high as possible. This format I think made both players and coaches more accountable to make sure of a best possible finish.

We had 9 returning players and 9 new players to State baseball and we, the coaching staff, felt that the team we had could have a real crack at finishing in first or second spot after the preliminary rounds. The boys gelled together very well and quickly realized that we can be a good team after some promising performances against the U18s in practice games.

Heading to Melbourne we were confident that if we could pitch well and catch the ball we were going to give ourselves a chance in each game. That showed in game 1 vs Victoria Blue as we jumped out of the blocks with 5 runs in the first and then a 10 run fourth inning helped us on to a 18-8 first up win. I think after the first inning, and definitely after the game, the boys realized the possibilities. Another win over Vic White and a loss to QLD which we were leading 6-1 going into the 5th still set us up for a medal round finish. Six errors proved costly against QLD. We went on to win 3 of the last 4 games and finish in 3rd place. Our other loss was against a strong NSW but again catching the ball was the difference in that result.

Our Bronze medal game was against WA, and after many starting delays due to the smoke from the bushfires at the time it was hard to get in a solid pregame. To the boys credit as for the whole week they adjusted to the situation and in a game shortened to 5 innings took control early and managed to withstand a WA fight back to win 5-3.

Everyone of the 18 contributed at different times to the success we had but there were a couple of really impressive performances, Max Stagg who right from the start of practices lead by example both off and on the field and was a huge clutch hitter for us. Riley Yeatman in his 2-pitching outing is showing more composure every time and Drew Davies showed what talent he has and can offer for the future.

Many thanks, again, to the rest of the coaching staff, Andrew Sperling whose passion for the game and to help the boys get better is undeniable. Nick Hutchings whom I have not worked with a lot but have seen play, fit in well and his ability to relate with the players was great, and Jon Barker who made sure the I’s were dotted and T’s were crossed was a pleasure to have around. Also, thanks to the parents who trusted their boys with us over the 12 weeks and for their support in Melbourne during the tournament. Hopefully they have become not only better baseballers but better teammates and people for the experience, and seeing your young men achieve a medal and wear it proudly was all worth it.

The under 18 state team this year travelled to Geelong, Victoria, to compete in Australian Youth Championship with a new look coaching staff. Darren “DR” Roberts from the Kensington Baseball Club and Stuart Millar from East Torrens came onboard and brought a lot knowledge with them. DR runs a great offensive game and Stuart’s understanding of regulations is invaluable. All the off-field duties were expertly handled by Sue Bull as Executive Officer.

We got on the plane with a good nucleus of experienced players at this level and earned the record of 5 and 3 from the 8-game tournament. The shortened format from previous years was a little difficult to negotiate, in particular the bullpen, which ultimately cost us a genuine gold medal opportunity losing games to traditionally lower ranked sides in Vic White and Canberra.

There were some outstanding performances from Jack Higginbotham and Connor McLeod who were the top two pitchers of the competition, returning home with ERA’s of .643 and .750 respectively. The pair vying for the ‘Golden Arm’ award, Jack the eventual winner.

Darcy Barry, Jasper Clark and Hamish Rees putting in exceptional games. Seiichiro Suzuki, Liam Bull, Jacob Scott, Carter Powell and Nick Rees were solid, with Tom Walsh and Peter Paech delivering above expectation.

Our awards were won by Jack Higginbotham and Darcy Barry. Jack was the MVP, giving us 3 unbelievable performances on the mound collecting 12 strike outs in 14 innings for 1 earned run. Darcy collected the most improved, which is more like a coaches award. A little unlucky not to get the top trophy but he started the week a little slow, understandable considering he suffered a broken hand 6 weeks prior.

For our preparation we played scrimmage games against Andrew Scott’s talented U16’s and had the rare opportunity, provided by Chris Adamson, for the players to practice with the Adelaide Giants squad. A terrific experience and humbling moment to show them where they are at and giving them the desire to strive for a little more. The bronze medal the boys received was a well-deserved reward for the hard work endured. As previously mentioned, we probably could’ve finished higher had the luck fallen our way but still a fine effort.

Finally, I’d like to thank the boys for their commitment during the process, and Sue, Stuart and Darren for the fantastic support. Lastly, thank you Baseball SA for entrusting me with this position.

* In line with Baseball SA’s Local Playing Rules & Conditions, specifically Rule 8.3.3.1, the Board deemed COVID-19 “circumstances beond Baseball SA’s control” which prevented the rescheduling of any finals, causing games to be abandoned and the season to be over. Therefore, Premierships were awarded to the “highest ranked team” at the time the games were abandoned.
