Backyard CompostingComposting is nature’s way of recycling organic material such as leaves, garden, and food wastes into compost. Mature compost improves the soil condition of lawns and gardens by adding carbon to the soil and lessening the density of soil. It also helps soil to retain water longer. Plants and crops grown in a well-composted soil mix tend to have more resistance to plant diseases as well. Backyard composting can also reduce garbage set out at the curb by 25% or more.

You can build your own composter, or buy one at a retailer. In either case, it’s simply a matter of mixing the green and brown materials listed in the chart below and turning them in the composter to introduce air into the mix in order to keep odours down and the right kind of bacteria alive and feeding on the waste you put in the composter. Do not add meats or other animal products into a backyard composter and try to avoid too much wet (green) waste as this will cause odours. The ideal Carbon to Nitrogen (C:N) ratio for composting is 30:1. Check the City website or www.compost.org for more information on composting.

Gardens benefit greatly from the addition of compost.

A Community Garden was established in 2012 at the Gord Watts Municipal Centre using compost from the leaf collection program in Brockville. The compost produced meets provincial requirements for un-restricted use. For information on the Community Garden Brockville network contact: [email protected]

Please enter from the north on Broome Road and turn right on Crocker Crescent ONLY and follow signage on event day.

• Fall Leaf Collections: Week of October 21st to 25th, 2019 and November 11th to 15th, 2019 - Put out leaves for collection in paper bags or reusable containers ONLY before 7:00 a.m. on your regular collection day during these two weeks. Leaves in plastic bags will NOT be collected. • Christmas Tree Collection: January 6th to 10th, 2020 - Put your natural Christmas trees only out on your regular collection day during this week. Please remove ALL decorations, tinsel, tree stands, nails, wire, tree bags, etc. Trees taller than 6’ will not fit on the truck and must be cut in half (do not place on top of snowbanks).

Wintertime Collection Tips• In the wintertime, please remember that waste collection takes place from the roadside. Do not leave waste on your front lawn or steps, or behind snowbanks where it may be missed or unsafe/difficult to access. Please place it at the end of your cleared driveway or safely clear a spot in the snow for placement.• In cold weather, your recycling may get stuck in the bin while it’s being emptied. Try not to put recycling in the bin if it’s still wet from rinsing.
