GET A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGEThe purpose of the Diploma in Jewellery Design and Manufacture is to graduate students who can contribute to the economy of South Africa through the visual arts, in that they are trained as jewellers/jewellery designers who can serve and contribute to society in line with social and economic transformation, through employment or via entrepreneurial endeavours. They will be empowered with creative and technical skills and abilities: visual and manual skills in jewellery design and manufacture, creativity and innovation, research skills, and conceptual and critical thinking. All these contribute to a vocation or career as a creative or commercial jeweller, and thereby to the jewellery industry and economy of South Africa. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSThe Admission Policy of the Arts Faculty follows the general Admission policy of TUT (2008) but includes specific programme requirements. Access to the Diploma in Jewellery Design and Manufacture requires a National Senior Certificate/relevant qualification at NQF level 4 plus the submission of a portfolio, the completion of a questionnaire, as well as a basic test of their potential abilities for pre-admission evaluation.

Different admission arrangements apply to applicants who passed Grade 12/matric before and after 2008:

Applicants who obtained a Senior Certificate before 2008 submit a Senior Certificate/equivalent qualification, complete an admission test by submitting a portfolio and completing a questionnaire and basic practical assessment. The questionnaire will contribute 30%, the portfolio 35% and the demonstration of practical skills assessment 35% towards the admission score.

Applicants who obtained a National Senior Certificate in or after 2008 submit a National Senior Certificate with an endorsement for entry to a Bachelor’s Degree/Diploma, or an equivalent qualification, with an achievement level of at least 3 for English (home language or first additional language) and an Admission Points Score (APS) of at least 17.

Those who meet these minimum criteria will be invited to submit a portfolio for evaluation, and to complete a questionnaire and a basic practical assessment. The questionnaire will contribute 30%, the portfolio 35% and the demonstration of practical skills assessment 35% towards the admission score.

Applicants with a National Certificate (Vocational) are considered with the following provisos: at least 50% for English (home language or first additional language); 50% for Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy; 50% for Life Orientation (excluded for APS calculation); 60% for any other three compulsory vocational subjects; and 50% for the fourth subject. An Admission Points Score (APS) of at least 27 is required to be invited to submit a portfolio, complete a questionnaire and a basic practical assessment. The questionnaire will contribute 30%, the portfolio 35% and the demonstration of practical skills assessment 35% towards the admission score.

ADVICE TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTSProspective students should please note that selection for programmes presented at the Faculty of the Arts will be possible only after the successful completion of the relevant evaluation process.

Please apply well in advance, we would like to suggest from March and not later than 31 July.

MINIMUM DURATIONThree years day of classes.

INTAKE FOR THE QUALIFICATION January only.

CAREER PROFILEThe prospective student should have an interest in, and understanding of, the jewellery design and manufacture industry. He or she should be able to produce creative work under pressure, work long hours, and keep to a tight schedule.
