Welcome Letter

Our 12th Annual Supportive Living Week will be held on April 22 – 26, 2019. Although it’s “officially” only one week long, we have a variety of fun activities planned from early February through June to help us celebrate our seniors and individuals with disabilities living within our Supportive Living communities.

Last year’s Supportive Living theme, A Colorful Life, highlighted the talent of our residents through a giant poster coloring competition. It helped us demonstrate that although everyone comes to Supportive Living with different backgrounds and life experiences, Supportive Living is instrumental in pulling us together to live a life filled with beauty, fun, happiness and friendships.

This year, we are kicking off the theme of Never Stop Dancing. Dancing and music go hand in hand. Music is a universal language and it plays a huge part in key moments throughout our lives. In fact, just the sound of a familiar tune can help uncover lost memories from days gone by. Together, music and dancing combine to keep people moving and happy, and our hope is that throughout the year, our residents and communities will find reasons and ways to Never Stop Dancing!

In fact, our 2019 Statewide Activity will be a dance video! Communities can select a song they want to dance to, create moves and choreography, and then capture it all on video! Videos will then be submitted to AALC and we will showcase them on our website and at the State Championships. We’ll also ask our communities to organize a dance party in their communities. After the party is over, residents can create a display with photos and an overview of the party, including music played, food served, costumes worn and room décor! We want to know what your theme was and how you all worked together to pull off the perfect event! Finished posters will then be displayed at the State Championships in Springfield to create a colorful, eye-catching backdrop to the competition. Both Never Stop Dancing projects will provide communities an opportunity to work together to create something fun, lively and unique - just like each Supportive Living community.

We hope you’ll take part in our activities as we celebrate SL 2019! Throughout the months leading up to Supportive Living Week we’ll have teams competing in Wii Bowling and “Music through the Decades” Trivia. However you decide to participate, know that you’re helping us show the general public and elected officials how Supportive Living plays an important role in the lives of our residents. Together we can demonstrate to everyone, that no matter your age, you should Never Stop Dancing!

I encourage every community to take part in the activities we have outlined throughout this Toolkit. If you have questions, let us know. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing your moves in the dance videos! Sincerely,

Wayne Smallwood Executive Director Affordable Assisted Living Coalition

Deadline for dance videos to be

submitted to AALC

May 22—23, 2019

A selection of dance videos will

be played during the Wii Bowling

and Trivia State Championships

Statewide Dance Video Project Overview Last year, our Supportive Living communities participated in a giant poster coloring project. This year, we’re asking our communities to show off their best dance moves by participating in dance video! Working as a group, each community can determine what song you want to dance to, choreograph dance moves, and then put it all on video to share with other communities!

Start by having your community select a favorite song. Then, work as a group to put your moves to music! Everyone can be involved by using wheelchairs, walkers, canes, you name it! Note - videos can be no longer than 3 minutes!

When you’re done, submit the finished video to AALC where we will then display it on our website and show selected videos at Statewide finals for Wii Bowling and Trivia! We’re excited to see what you can come up with and we can’t wait to share your inspiring dance videos with others. It’s safe to say that our Supportive Living residents Never Stop Dancing!

Let’s Get Started! Turn the page to discover simple steps on how to participate in the dance video!

This is a fun activity meant to bring your community members together to create a video that demonstrates how important it

is to Never Stop Dancing!

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place videos.

Statewide Dance Party Posters

Statewide Dance Party Poster Overview Unlike the Statewide Dance Video competition where we ask communities to work together to choreograph and dance to a song they love, we’re asking communities to plan their own dance party and create a poster board showcasing all the creativity that went into the event.

We encourage communities to select a theme for their dance party.

Great Gatsby? Sock Hop? Roaring 20s? Disco?

Whatever you choose, you’ll then be in charge of decorations, music to play, food to serve, clothes to wear and more! Take pictures of the planning and the actual dance, and then compile it all on a fun, colorful poster board display! Write up a brief overview of what the theme was and highlight all the different things your residents did to make it unique and fun and include that on your display.

What will your dance party be? Start planning your party today! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

The submitted posters will be

displayed at the State Championship Finals in Springfield for everyone to see!

Submission Rules:

Affix the entry to a foam core/poster board.

Include an 8.5 x 11 overview of what went into the planning of your party.

Include name of community, dance theme, songs played, description of décor, food served, and more!

Take photos of the planning and the dance. Include pieces of décor if you want to get really creative!

Statewide Open House

Celebrate Supportive Living! Host an Open House during

the week of April 22-26, 2019!

Supportive Living Week will be celebrated from April 22-26, 2019. We encourage our Supportive Living communities throughout the State to celebrate the Supportive Living Program by hosting Open Houses to show off the work you do and the caring environment you provide for today’s seniors and persons with disabilities. Invite the general public and elected officials to come tour your community, talk to your residents and educate your guests about the many benefits of Supportive Living. Ideas for your Open House: Provide guided tours of your community and its amenities (be

sure to highlight education, fitness and social events). Invite elected officials to attend your open house. Have guests tour a model or resident apartment. Ask residents who are pleased with the program and

community to be on hand during the Open House to talk with guests.

Discuss financial assistance opportunities available for those who qualify.

Offer a brief overview about the benefits of Supportive Living. AALC has a PowerPoint presentation that can be used for your

open house. Explain how Supportive Living differs from other models -

namely nursing homes and private pay assisted living. A brochure that promotes the Supportive Living model can be

ordered from AALC to hand out to visitors. Hold a question and answer session. Invite guests to return to the community to discuss individual

needs and interests following the Open House. Advertise your Open House in the community events section

of your local paper. Send out flyers to your contact list inviting them to join you at

your open house!

Together, we can promote Supportive Living successes to the local community, seniors,

persons with disabilities, their families and our elected officials!

Music Trivia Competition

Music Through the Decades Trivia Uncover the hidden musical knowledge of your Supportive Living Community residents by participating in our 2019 Music through the Decades Trivia Competition! Each year we search for something fun that will challenge our residents in a new way. This year we’re testing your musical memories and exercising your brains with trivia! We’ll test your knowledge by focusing on trivia related to music through the decades!

Contestants will be asked to compete in Local and Regional trivia matches with the top three teams from each region moving on to the State championship, which will be held in Springfield on May 22-23, 2019!

Step 2: Compete at Your SL Community 1. Communities will first be required to conduct

a Local trivia competition at their SL community. The top team will advance to a Regional competition.

2. A minimum of two judges will be required for each trivia contest.

3. The Local trivia contest will consist of 15 rounds. The first question will be read to the first team.

4. Each team will write down their answer and assign a point value (1-15). Each point value can only be used once. Download Point Sheets & Score Sheets.

5. Teams will have a time limit of 1 minute in which to answer the questions correctly.

6. The team with the most points at the end of 15 rounds is the winning team. No team is eliminated until 15 rounds are concluded.

7. A judge will come around and collect the answer sheets and read the answers aloud.

8. If the team answers correctly, they earn the allotted points. If the team does not answer correctly, they will not earn the points.

9. Repeat this process for each team for 15 rounds. The team with the most points at the end of 15

rounds is the winning team. No team is eliminated until 15 rounds are concluded.

10. If at the end of 15 rounds there is a tie for first, the match will become a single-elimination tournament. The teams that answer correctly in each round will move on to the next round. The teams that do not answer correctly will not move on to the next round. The last team remaining is the winning team. You must complete each round before a team is eliminated.

11. The questions will be selected randomly from the provided lists by the judges.

12. The winning team will advance to Regionals if they specified they would like to compete in Regionals. If some team members do not want to compete in Regionals, the alternates that are listed on the registration form may compete.

13. If a team does not wish to advance, the second place team will advance.

Step 1: Sign Up Residents 1. Trivia participants must currently reside in an Illinois Supportive Living community.

2. Participants will form teams composed of two to three residents and each team is encouraged to have one to two alternates. Alternates may participate during any of the competitions whenever an original registered team member is unable to participate. Each community is encouraged to have more than one team.

3. Each team that wants to participate in the trivia competition must register online by January 31, 2019.

4. Each community shall include a $75.00 payment for registration. The $75 payment covers all teams from the community. Register teams online. Then, visit the website to pay $75 for your teams online
