2020 PITCHit Western NSW Partnership Prospectus

PITCHit Western NSW encourages research and innovation by supporting Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) staff to launch or progress their idea - no matter how big or small. We know our staff are natural innovators and have great ideas about how our system, the patient experience and healthcare delivery can be improved.

WNSWLHD staff and their academic or Non-Government Organisation partners will be invited to pitch their innovative ideas for change through a two-step process. Step one is a written application assessed by a multi-disciplinary team. Step two is an in-person or virtual pitch to an expert judging panel and virtual or face to face audience, where prizes will be awarded for the most innovative pitches.

The 2020 PITCHit Western NSW event is proudly supported by our Major Partner, Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations, who have generously provided 3 years of funding for this event.

2020 PITCHit Western NSW will aim to:

Capture the hearts and minds of staff to think outside the box to make a change

Infuse a culture of research and innovation

Give staff an opportunity to apply for larger competitive grants in the future

Encourage all staff to participate, including junior and senior clinicians and managers

Encourage staff to work in partnership with academics and NGOs

Be a streamlined and efficient process with which staff can apply and receive funding.

For this year’s PITCHit Western NSW event, we welcome a new category for pitches relating to Green and Sustainable innovations. As a District, we pride ourselves on encouraging environmentally sustainable work practices and we think PITCHit Western NSW can help to drive more innovations. Some of the initiatives we currently are developing include moving from plastic to biodegradable (pulp and sugar cane materials) theatre trays, medication cups and injection trays as well as transitioning to hybrid cars as part of our fleet vehicles.

2020 PITCHit Western NSW winning ideas will be supported with mentoring and accelerator support from WNSWLHD staff, start-up and academic partners.

The 2020 PITCHit Western NSW virtual and face to face event will be held on Monday 30th November 2020 from 2.30pm-4pm at the Orange Theatre (TBC). Winners will be announced and celebrated on the day. We look forward to having you involved!

About Western NSW Local Health District

Our region covers nearly 250,000 square kilometres – which is 1/3 of NSW

Our region includes three major referral hospitals, four District health services, 38 inpatient facilities, 50 community health centres, 25 multipurpose services and the largest rural mental health service in Australia

Our region extends from Bathurst in the east to Bourke in the west, north to the Queensland border, and south to Cowra

More than 275,000 people live in our District, with just over 11 per cent being Aboriginal

We employ around 7,000 people – over 2.5% of the District’s population are part of our team

Our track record for Research & Innovation

We established the Research Office in August 2018, and launched the LHDs first Research Strategy 2018-2021, which strategically positions us to be proactive in seeking out research opportunities, and to become a leader in the delivery of world-class, meaningful rural health research

WNSWLHD is proud of the achievements of the Central West Cancer Trials Unit (CTU), based in Orange, which was established in 2014. The CTU has been developing rapidly with Phase 1 clinical trials and tele-trials being offered. In recognition of its growing success, the CTU won the 2017 NSW Premier’s Award for Outstanding Cancer Research and the 2017 Australasian Gastro Intestinal Trials Group Outstanding Site Award.

We established the Western NSW Health Intelligence Unit, a shared resource for health care providers in our region, providing data analysis and interpretation

We have been successful with four competitive NSW Health Translational Research Grants from 2016-2019, totalling over $1.6m

We have proudly supported the Western NSW Health Research Network (WHRN) since it began in 2014, and signed a three-year partnership to ensure strong research collaboration for 2018-2021

We have developed a Technology Enablement Strategy which aims to build a Digital Health Ecosystem, with investment focused on information consolidation, improving access to systems and information, care coordination, and enhancing and personalising patient care and staff experience.
