CATTLEThe cattle competitions at the Perth Royal Show are some of the oldest competitions held at the Showground and considered to be among the most prestigious in Australia. They benchmark industry excellence and reward the achievements of Western Australian cattle breeders. The program includes breed judging, junior judging and a commercial auction. The quality of animals is always high and competition is tough.

The competitions draw around 400 beef cattle from 19 different beef breeds including Angus, Charolais, Dexter, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Murray Grey, Red Angus, Red Poll and Simmental. Exhibitors also compete with dairy cattle from the four dairy breeds, Guernsey, Holstein, Illawarra and Jersey.

MISSION STATEMENT

To provide a forum that can enhance the knowledge of all stakeholders in the Western Australian Beef and Dairy industries by showcasing breed aesthetic diversity and excellence, whilst implementing the highest level of standards in animal welfare, product integrity, biosecurity and production efficiency for national and international consumers.

Harris Thompson

2018 ASA National Beef Cattle Judging Champion

I am a 9th generation cattle farmer who is passionate about the cattle industry and a partner in our family owned business, Venturon Livestock, located in the South West farming district of Boyup Brook, Western Australia. We run a broad acre farming operation incorporating a commercial cattle herd, Venturon Charolais and Mighty Murray Grey studs.

From an early age I developed a keen interest in cattle judging, showing and have won the Western Australian Junior Beef Cattle Judges Final in 2014 and 2017 at the Perth Royal Show.

In 2016 I won the Murray Grey Youth Ambassador Award and travelled to New Zealand. Whilst there, I competed in and won the 2016 New Zealand Young Judges Championship Beef Cattle at the Canterbury A & P Show.

I have judged at Agricultural Shows in Western Australia and was an associate judge for the Shorthorn Breed at the 2017 Perth Royal Show having also judged at BEEF Australia 2018.

Harris’ victory helped the WA team claim the Keast Shield at the 2018 Royal Adelaide Show.

BILLI MARSHALL Beef Cattle Judging Championship

Fortunate to grow up in regional WA but never on a property of our own, I have always had a deep passion for Agriculture and working with livestock. It wasn’t until my high-school years I was introduced to beef cattle showing and exhibition. Within attending my first few regional shows, I was quick to realise Beef Junior Judging was my forte and something I could do well in. Now at 23 I am employed as a Cattle breeding technician, specialising in artificial breeding and embryo transfer.

I now try commit my time to the education and encouragement of Youth in Agriculture and supporting our regional communities and farmers across the State, while leaving enough time to step back into the ring every now and then. I am very excited to be representing WA for the second time in the ASA Beef Junior Judging National Final, especially being the host-State this year; and I would like to thank the RASWA for their continued support and efforts.

AMANDA CAVENAGH Beef Cattle Parading Championship

I was brought up on my parents Charolais Stud in Elgin where over the years I have enjoyed showing and preparing our cattle for the Perth Royal and numerous country shows. I’m currently studying at Harvey Agricultural College and hope to further my study in beef genetics which will enable me to find work in the beef cattle industry. Through showing cattle I have met some amazing people from all over Australia that have been able to help and guide me along the way.

In 2016 I was lucky enough to start my own small Charolais Stud – Ace Charolais. Hopefully I can continue with my stud in the future and enjoying many years of showing my own cattle.

I have had numerous successes in the area of Cattle Parading and last year I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship from the Charolais Society of WA to attend the Charolais Youth Stampede held in Dubbo NSW. Held over three days I was able to be a part of the National Show & Sale as well as competing in judging and parading events. I was lucky enough to be placed 3rd in the Intermediate.

I am extremely excited to represent WA in the ASA National Parading Championship at this year’s Perth Royal Show, and I thank the Royal Agricultural Society of WA for this opportunity.

Jai Thomas

2018 ASA National Dairy Cattle Judging Champion

I am the 3rd generation of my family to be involved in showing Cattle at the Perth Royal Show. My grandfather exhibited Illawarra cattle from 1975 until my father took over in 1992. I started helping my dad at the Show from three years old and have done so ever since.

I started my own Shorthorn stud in 2015 and love preparing my Cattle for the Perth Royal Show. I have competed in junior judging and parading since I was five,

starting with the Archie McLaren parading competition and then worked up to the Junior Judging and state paraders competitions.

I thrive on learning more about the cattle industry and listening to the judges’ comments. Jai’s victory helped the WA team claim the Keast Shield at the 2018 Royal Adelaide Show.

Page 40: 2019 SCHEDULE...The competitions draw around 400 beef cattle from 19 different beef breeds including Angus, Charolais, Dexter, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Murray …

LYDIA ANGI Dairy Cattle Parading Championship

I have grown up on a dairy farm in Yarloop, WA and have always showed an interest in agriculture. I have been involved in showing cattle from a very young age. Following in my dad’s footsteps as he has been showing cattle since his early days too. Normal school had never been an interest of mine so I decided to attend Harvey Agricultural College to learn more about agriculture and so far, it has been the best decision I’ve ever made, I am surrounded by good people who I can share my passion with. While attending Harvey Agricultural College I have been involved in not only being a leader for clipping and showing cattle but in judging for beef and dairy as well.

I have attended youth camps that helped me develop more knowledge in the showing industry, this has led me to some exciting opportunities that I am very thankful for.

I could not be prouder and more excited to be representing Western Australia in the ASA National Finals in 2019. Thank you to the Royal Agricultural Society of WA for allowing me to have this opportunity.

SAM HALL Dairy Cattle Judging Championship

I was born and raised in the City of Perth and always passionate about working with Dairy Cattle even though I enjoy watching both beef and dairy cattle at the Show. I discovered that my Great Grandfather was a dairy Farmer in South Africa, this is believed to be where my passion has come from.

I attend Harvey Agricultural College where I have been involved in the showing of our school’s Stud Dairy Cattle. Recently, as part of my prize for the WA Youth Cattle Handlers Camp 2017, I got an opportunity through Holstein Australia to participate in Victoria and attend IDW. I won the Sheri Martin Memorial Award for Outstanding Youth Showmanship Skills (Intermediate) and worked alongside very experienced people involved in Victoria’s Dairy Cattle Industry. These people were happy to share their knowledge and expertise with me. This has given me an opportunity to enhance my skills in the preparation and showing of Stud Dairy Cattle. I hope my future consists of more learning opportunities which also may include my passion for genetics and breeding of Dairy Cattle.

Sam will represent WA at upcoming ASA National Dairy Cattle Judging final at the 2019 Perth Royal Show.

PART THREE CARCASE COMPETITION

Carcases will be judged according to the Australian Beef Carcase Appraisal System (ABCAS) utilising the scientific principals of Meat Standards Australia (MSA). A more detailed description is available from RASWA upon request.

All exhibits will remain in the class to which they were assigned on the hoof i.e. a Lightweight exhibit will be judged as a Lightweight exhibit on the hook. However, carcases will be judged depending on which carcase category they fall into which are determined by the Hot Standard Carcase Weight (HSCW) of the exhibit. Animals within an individual class may be judged across one or more carcase weight categories depending on the spread of carcase weights in that individual class. The fat requirements for each category are outlined in the table below. These will be the categories used for judging under the ABCAS system.

Exhibitors are required to predict what carcase weight their exhibit will be and ensure they have correct fat depths for that category. If a carcase has a fat depth in the correct range, then it will score maximum points. If carcases are over or under fat, it is a sliding scale for points allocation.

The ideal fat depths for carcases in the Carcase Competition are as follows for the different HSCW categories:

Carcase Category Weight P8 Rib fat

A. Light domestic 100.0 - 180.0kg 4 - 8mm 3 - 6mm

B. Medium domestic 180.1 - 240.0kg 6 - 10mm 4 - 7mm

C. Heavy domestic 240.1 - 300.0kg 8 - 12mm 5 - 9mm

D. Export (EU, Japan) 300.1 - 400.0kg 10 - 14mm 7 - 11mm

The measured fat depth of a carcase must fall within this range to gain maximum points.

Points allocation using ABCAS scoring system.

Penalties* as required

*A 5 point penalty will be applied if fat colour is greater than 3, if the animal exhibits blood splash or at the carcase Judge’sdiscretion.

2. Saleable meat yield (35 points)

Total 100

**To receive eating quality points, carcases must meet the minimum MSA carcase specifications:

1. Minimum of 3mm of rib fat;2. Adequate fat distribution; and3. pH of 5.70 or less.

Any carcases which fail any of the above requirements will receive a score of 0/45 for eating quality.

***Eating quality points are calculated using the predicted MSA eating quality scores of 35 cut by cook combinations (100 CMQ4 score points each) of economic importance in the carcase, giving a score out of 3500 and adjusted back to ascore out of 45. The eating quality score will be highest in carcases with low TBC, no HGPs, low ossification and high marbling.
