Business Leader Of the Year — Steve Pelkey

Over the past 25 to 30 years Atlas Fireworks has flourished into an international business with their hard work ethics. Atlas won the “Gold Jupiter Award” in 2012. Steve Pelkey, owner of Atlas Fireworks, is not only a hardworking businessman, but has donated much of his time to serve his community. Every summer, Atlas hires 15 students from Franklin Pierce University and Conant High School, which gives them a sense of Atlas’s pride with their expectations in the workplace. In his younger years, Steve Pelkey served his country by serving four years in the United States Air Force. While raising his young family, Steve coached the Conant High School basketball, softball, and soccer teams. He also began the first freshman boys basketball team giving all freshman the opportunity to play the sport. Steve has also served the community by volunteering time to several organizations. He served as president of the Jaffrey Chamber, served on the board of the

Keene YMCA, the board of trustees at Franklin Pierce University, and the board at Saint Patrick’s Church. He also had his hand in politics by serving as a State Representative for the towns of Rindge, Jaffrey, and Dublin for two terms. Mr. Pelkey now serves on the board of Atlas Pyrotechnics Association, and volunteers his time auctioneering at benefit auctions for Monadnock Family Services and Team Jaffrey. Steve has donated generously to youth organizations and those in need such as “Make a Wish” and “Shelter from the Storm” and supports many non-profit organizations in the Monadnock area through donations and generous discount for all firework displays. As an outstanding businessman and community volunteer, the Rindge Chamber of Commerce awards Steve Pelkey, 2018 Business Leader of the Year. This award will be presented at the Annual Rindge Chamber Gala on Saturday, January 19, 2019.

The Rindge Chamber Welcomes The Park Theatre as a New MemberThe Park Theatre was founded in 1922 and originally was situated in Peterborough New Hampshire. Today you can find it in Jaffrey, New Hampshire with many events found on their website including movies on specific days every week. Look for Performance and Event Venue to find out what is happening! The Park Theatre was the center of community life as a movie and vaudeville house for 54 years. In 1976 the facility became a retail store and warehouse until it was purchased by The Park Theatre Corporation in 2005.

The Theatre will be rebuilt as a sustainable, state-of-the-art film and performing arts center, featuring two auditoriums and presenting movies, live theatre, including children’s productions, concerts, live acts, lectures and symposiums as well as a venue for community and business gatherings for the Monadnock Region and its 100,000 residents, school districts and dynamic artistic community.

Woodbound Inn Charity Buffet DinnerThe Woodbound Inn has a buffet dinner on Wednesday evenings and they donate a part of the cost to a local non-profit. We were excited to find out that the Villi Poni Farm was chosen to be the recipient on both Wednesday, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The outcome was great and the ponies were outside the Woodbound Inn greeting customers. Every Wednesday, the Woodbound Inn will continue to support non-profit organizations such as Villi Poni Farm to help non-profit organizations. Please come enjoy the delicious buffets provided by the Woodbound Inn and help support a non-profit in need.

Please join us in welcoming one of our newest members, Scott-Farrar in Peterborough, NH. According to the website, “Scott-Farrar has roots in the Peterborough community that go back to the incorporation of the Peterborough Home for the Aged in 1909.

Originally, the home was located in a small house on Vine Street, until the 1920’s when descendants of Helen Farrar donated their large Victorian home and property on Elm Street. When Jennie Scott, a lifelong resident of Peterborough, died in 1954, she bequeathed half of her estate to the Peterborough Home for the Aged.

In 1957, the new non-profit charitable organization was incorporated and the community’s name changed to

the Scott-Farrar Home and the brick Scott-Farrar home that so many are familiar with was built.

Building upon its lengthy heritage of providing care to seniors, Scott-Farrar at Peterborough was fully rebuilt, with a slight name change, in 2016, to meet the evolving expectations of today’s seniors.” Their mission is to provide “a healthy, safe, home-like environment for the Monadnock Region’s older citizens at an affordable cost. The professional quality of care, diverse backgrounds of the Residents and variety of activities contribute to a rich and stimulating atmosphere. Scott-Farrar is dedicated to meeting the needs of each Resident in a dignified and caring manner.” Please visit www.scott-farrar.com for more information.

Operation Santa Returns"It's the most wonderful time of the year", as the song goes. For some families in our town the season comes with increased worries over financial needs. The Rindge Woman's Club began a program many years ago to assist with those concerns; called OPERATION SANTA.

On Fri., Nov. 23 the Giving Trees go up at TD Bank in Rindge, Verizon @ Cheshire Marketplace, and Rindge Ingalls Library.

The trees will contain the wishes of children for toys and clothing. The requests have always been filled by the generous people of the area. The purchased item/items need to be wrapped and returned to the tree where the request was obtained with the original tag attached. Be assured that all names are in code and that each tag taken reflects only ONE of the child's requests. The deadline for return of the gifts is Sat., Dec. 15. The students of Franklin Pierce University will again provide the children with age appropriate books, along with warm winter socks.

Please help us bring smiles to the faces of children on Christmas morning. Another saying, which is so true is: "it is better to give than receive." Let's make everyone's holiday joyous.

If you or anyone you know needs assistance, please call Marilyn Griska at (603) 899-3083, as soon as possible. All inquiries are confidential.

The Rindge ChamberConnects with Food PantryThis year the Rindge Chamber will be placing holiday boxes in banks and smaller stores to collect canned goods for the Rindge Food Pantry. They will be distributed in November and December to help the needy throughout the holiday months. Canned items and non-perishable items would be most helpful.

Please give what you can to aid in this needy cause.

Thank you to all who can support this cause!

With the recent completion of a new youth center, the Clark Memorial YMCA in Winchendon is setting its sights on the future. The new 13,600 square foot mixed-use building now serves as home to the gymnastics program, as well as the before and after school child care program, as well as a community room.

This is the latest in facility updates that the Y has focused on the past few years. Prior to that, the main Y facility, which houses the pool, fitness center, and gymnasium, underwent a renovation focusing on accessibility and safety. That included the addition of an elevator, family changing rooms, lobby renovations and the addition of 888 solar panels.

“These facility improvements help us to expand our programming and we are proud to be able to grow with the community and continue to provide programs and services that help meet the needs and interests of area families” stated Michael Quinn, Executive Director.

The Clark YMCA is open 7 days a week and offers a wide variety of youth, adult, family and senior programming.

For more information, visit clarkymca.org or in person at 155 Central Street, Winchendon.

Be sure to inquire about the Y’s Membership For All pricing.

Pumpkin Roll RecipeIngredients:

Two 3-ounce packages cream cheese, room temperature1 stick butter (1/2 cup), room temperature1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract3 large eggs1 cup granulated sugar2/3 cup canned pumpkin1 teaspoon lemon juice

3/4 cup all-purpose flour1 teaspoon ground ginger1/2 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon baking powder2 teaspoons ground cinnamon1 cup pecans, finely chopped1 cup confectioners' sugar, plus more for sprinkling

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350˚ F. Grease and flour a 17 ½ by 12 ½ inch jellyroll pan. With an electric mixer, beat the eggs, granulated sugar, pumpkin and lemon juice until smooth.

Sift together the flour, ginger, salt, baking powder, and cinnamon. Add the sifted ingredients to the egg mixture and blend until fully combined.

Spread the batter in the jellyroll pan. Sprinkle the dough with the chopped pecans. Bake until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, 14 minutes.

Let the cake cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Invert the cake onto a wire rack. Sprinkle some of the confectioners' sugar on a large tea towel and carefully transfer the warm cake to the towel, folding the sides of the towel over the cake. Roll the cake up in the towel and cool in the refrigerator thoroughly for about 45 minutes.

With an electric mixer, combine the confectioners' sugar, cream cheese, butter, and vanilla and beat until smooth. Carefully unroll the cooled cake and spread the mixture on top of the cake. Gently re-roll the cake up and refrigerate it until you're ready to slice and serve. Dust with confectioners' sugar just before serving.

Enjoy!

Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center and the Monadnock Adult Care Center (MACC) received a $5,000 grant from The Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund.

RSVP’s Neighbors-In-Deed program enables seniors, adults with disabilities, veterans, and military families to maintain their independence in their homes with the companionship and support from RSVP volunteers. Volunteers are matched one-to-one to provide visits; transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, and errands; respite for caregivers; and home repairs.

MACC provides physical, social and cognitive services to adults who require supervised care. The Center allows families and caregivers the opportunity for much needed respite time and the ability to remain employed. MACC is licensed as a Medical Day Health Center.

The Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund makes grants to tax-exempt organizations without regard to religious affiliation for projects that help people in New Hampshire meet their basic needs. The Fund is operated by volunteer lay men and women who serve as Directors and who make recommendations to the Bishop of Manchester for grants to any organization in New Hampshire whose mission is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center is a program of Monadnock Family Services, a Monadnock United Way Agency.

Pumpkin FestThis year on Sat., Oct. 6, the Woman’s Club Annual Harvest fair proved to be a great success with many vendors selling their wonderful homemade gifts and homemade edible goodies for all! The event is held at the Rindge Elementary School each year.

New to the fair this year was the Rindge Chamber of Commerce’s Mini Pumpkin fest which proved to be a huge success! Children painted pumpkins and then placed them on the awesome “Halloween Float” built by Kevin Sawyer of Rindge, NH.

Sixteen Franklin Pierce Students came to volunteer their time helping the children to paint and place their pumpkins on the Halloween float. All children received a prize for their efforts and at the end of the fair, a boy and girl painted pumpkin was chosen by the FPU students as most creative.

This was a great success due to wonderful participation by the children and students working together. Also, a big thanks to Whites Farm for their donation of pumpkins at a minimal price and to Roberta Oeser for offering pumpkins left from the September 22nd,250th Festival event.

Thanks to all who helped!

The Rindge chamber hopes to continue this in collaboration with the Rindge Woman’s club for years to come!

5 Real Estate Tips That Hold True In Any Market1. Always Conduct Thorough Research On The Current Market

Real estate values fluctuate due to local supply/demand, it's important to remember that properties always sell for no more or less than what the market will bear at that time. Whether buying or selling, do your research and be confident in your price.

2. Keep Your Home's Condition Pristine If You're Looking To Sell

Well-maintained houses always sell faster. Buyers appreciate houses that look move-in ready and are updated versus those that need a lot of work. In a hot real estate market, most houses sell quickly. But during a cooler market period, buyers can get very picky, so it will be the nicer ones that continue to sell.

3. Approach Negotiations From A Collaborative Standpoint

Try not to be fixated on a specific price. The goal should be working to together to come to an agreement that satisfies both parties. Being stubborn can mean the end of negotiations. Take a step back and try to think about what would be a win for everyone?

4. Remember That A Home's True Value Is Determined By The Buyer

No matter what the market conditions are, the true market value of a home is only equal to what a buyer is willing to pay. Just because a seller believes their home is worth a certain amount of money, it won’t always be equal to what a buyer believes it to be.

5. Find An Experienced Local Real Estate Agent

Home sellers and buyers can get more information about real estate online than ever. But what they can't get online and can only get from a local real estate agent, is that insider knowledge. A local agent who is a neighborhood expert knows things about the homes and the community you just can't get online!

Franklin Pierce Students Celebrate Halloween withthe Community The Annual ‘Trick or Treat’ event at Franklin Pierce University was held on Tues., Oct. 30 this year. There was Festive Halloween décor and a generous handout of candy given to trick or treaters by the University's Junior and Senior class. Franklin Pierce University shuttles transported children dressed in halloween costumes to all of the Junior and Seniors' apartment housing. Luis Alvarez, a Junior student at Franklin Pierce, working part time at Verizon in Rindge stated, “It appeared that there were ‘thousands’ of little kids enjoying themselves on our campus!”

A big thank you to Franklin Pierce University students for continuing this wonderful annual event!

This past Fall, the Rindge Veterans have been selling calendars to earn money to restore the War Memorials throughout the town. The calendars depicted scenes of the most recent Memorial Day Parade along with pictures of the Veterans in uniform, and bystanders watching the parade.

These beautiful pictures were taken by Tara Olson of Rindge also known as ‘Tara O Photography’.

Veteran, Mike Krygowski, organized the sale and distribution of the calendars selling 125 in total! The Veterans hope to make this an annual fundraiser.

Thank you to the Veterans for their service and hard work!

What’s Smarter – Paying Off Debts or Investing? This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

If you’re set to receive a year-end bonus or a tax refund in a couple of months, what will you do with this money? Should you invest it or pay off debts?

If your cash flow is strong, you might want to invest the extra money. But if you are just getting by, possibly due to high-interest loans, you might be better off reducing your debt load. For the future, you might be able to help control your debts by building an emergency fund, with the money held in a liquid account, to pay for unexpected costs.

You’ll also want to evaluate which debts to tackle first. Instead of making extra mortgage payments, you might want to pay down high-rate consumer loans whose interest cannot be deducted from your taxes.

If you can invest your extra money, look for timely opportunities. For instance, you have until April 15, 2019, to fully fund your IRA for the 2018 tax year.

When you do get a bonus or tax refund, think carefully about what to do with the money. It will be time well spent.
