This broad-based course provides a comprehensive overview of the characteristics of
electric power system basics, performance requirements and effective procedures to be
used for the planning and the operation of power systems.
Starting with a historical approach, the course introduces the main features of the modern
power systems along with the emerging trends brought by new technologies and the
increasing penetration of solar and wind resources with a broad analysis of restructured
energy markets. The course highlights the necessity of understanding power system
stability with an in depth discussion on frequency and voltage control. It provides insights
into the connected grid, the smart home and the smart city. Interoperability aspects and
standards are discussed, as well as the consumer centric paradigm of Transactive Energy.
The second part describes the procedures used for the planning and the operation of
power systems. The third part covers the methods used to ensure a safe, secure and
reliable operation of power systems. This last section introduces the main numerical
methods applied to large power systems and the core models that optimize generation
production and derives the energy price.
The course provides a good overview of modern power systems, the different levels of
control, and the nature of stability problems the engineers face in their day-to-day work.
The course includes the Power System Stability and Control book by Dr. Prabha Kundur, a
world renowned expert in power systems.
The course gives a broad overview of the power systems fundamentals, new grid
requirements, and the increased impact of renewable resources on the operation and
planning of the power system. It provides the necessary tools to understand the short and
long term reliability assessments and the processes undertaken to evaluate long term
adequacy requirements. The participants will get exposure to the main methods applied to
power system planning and the stable and reliable operation of the power system in a
vertically integrated as well as a deregulated power market.
