FIRST LOOK: Today’s exhibition match is the first look at the 2019 Eagles in the Kristi Brodin Pavil-ion, though the game does not count for Northwest. The actual home opener is just under two weeks away, when Corban visits on Friday the 13th of Sep-tember for a Cascade Collegiate Conference con-test.

ROADIES: The Eagles went 2-4 during their six games in Montana to start the season, going 1-1 in true road contests and 1-3 on a neutral court. Northwest took three sets from NAIA Top 25 teams during their four matches in the Big Sky Challenge.

SMARTIES: Northwest returns two NAIA Scholar Athletes in seniors Kylie Szczepanski and Keann White. Szczepanski and White joined returning players Courteney Carr, Tatiana Ensz, Sarah How-lett, Hannah Lord, and Hannah Michaels on last year’s CCC Academic All-Conference squad.

POINTS LEADER: Abi Broussard, with 64 kills, seven aces, six solo blocks, and 21 block assists, leads the team with 87.5 points. Hannah Lord has 76.

HITTERS: Hannah Lord leads the Eagles with 68 kills and 2.62 kills per set, with Abi Broussard right behind at 64 kills and 2.56 per set. Broussard leads with a .270 attack percentage, with Lord at .246.

THE SET-UP: Courteney Carr has rung up 221 as-sists this season for an average of 8.5 per game. Carr ranks No. 15 nationally in total assists.

PAIR OF ACES: Tatiana Ensz launched nine aces in Montana and leads the team with Abi Broussard right behind her with seven. The Eagles average 1.35 aces per game.

THEY GOT THIS: Cristina Hegarty has 143 digs and a 5.5 digs-per-game average, and Eleanor Ma-son and Hannah Michaels contribute 2.19 per game each. Hegarty leads the Cascade Collegiate Conference in digs and is sixth in the NAIA in total

digs. Hegarty and Mason are both at .961 in receiv-ing serves, with Michaels right behind at .959.

BACK ATCHA: Abi Broussard has been in on a team-leading 27 blocks this season for 1.08 per game. Her 27 blocks are ranked No. 17 total in the NAIA. Kylie Szczepanski checks in at 0.71 with 15 blocks. With 50.5 blocks this season, Northwest is No. 15 in the NAIA.

A LOOK AT SEATTLE PACIFIC: Seattle Pacific has not yet opened its season. The Falcons are picked sixth in the Great Northwest Athletic Confer-ence (NCAA Division II) after an 11-16 season in 2018. Senior Gabby Odoo has racked up 1000 points and 1000 kills in her career, and Jaeden Hooker had 2.26 kills per game last season. This season’s roster includes eight freshmen.

BAIN BAR: Northwest coach Steven Bain last sea-son became the first Eagles volleyball coach to reach 100 wins. The year before that, he became the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories and guided the team to its first NAIA postseason. That coaching wins record now stands at 114 victo-ries. Prior to NU, Bain had 177 wins and two State Championships at King’s High School in Seattle.

POINTS IN THE POLL: Northwest got some measure of respect with 18 points in the preseason NAIA Coaches’ Poll, which amounts to a No. 31 ranking. Two Top 10 schools, as well as the No. 12 team in the poll, face NU on the Cascade Colle-giate Conference schedule.

COMING UP: Northwest returns to the road and starts the Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule with a trip to Portland. The Eagles take on Warner Pacific at 7 p.m. Friday and Multnomah at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Warner Pacific opens its regular season this weekend in Lewiston, Idaho.

Head Coach Steve Bain Coach Bain, beginning his eighth season at NU, came to the Eagles from King’s High School in Seattle where he compiled a 117-10 regular sea-son record, a post season record of 60-14, and won 1A state champion-ships in 2008 and 2009. He guided King’s to nine consecutive appear-ances in the WIAA (Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association) state tournament and has finished fourth or higher in eight of the appear-ances.

The Eagles completed a 24-10 record in 2017, the best W-L record for an NU volleyball team since 2004, and the first trip of any Eagle team to the NAIA Volleyball National Championships. The team posted a 19-8 season and 3rd place finish in the Cascade Collegiate Conference in 2016. They also made their way to the semifinals of the CCC post sea-son tournament in '16 and '17. Bain has compiled a 114-92 record and

has compiled the most wins of any Northwest U volleyball coach.

During his time at King’s, his teams won nine straight conference championships along with six re-gional championships. Na-tionally, his teams were ranked in the top four in the country from 2007 to 2011 by the National Christian School Athletic Association (NCSAA). King’s was also the recipient of the 1A WIAA Academic State Champion-ship Award in 2010 and 2011. Bain has been named coach of the year four times, the WIAA AP Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009, the Seattle Times “Star Times” Coach of the Year award in 2009 and the National Coach of the Year award by the NCSAA in 2008.

At King’s, Bain’s players earned many individual honors including five Washington State MVP awards, five NCSAA All-American awards, and numerous first team all-conference and first team all-state accolades.

Coach Bain is a graduate of Northern Arizona University, earned his PhD in Veterinary Science from Washington State University and is currently a research associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Washington.
