Finding Your Niche: Establishing an
Ecological Focus for Your Firm Larry Weaner, Principal, Larry Weaner Design Associates
Demand for ecologically beneficial landscapes in increasing, and
businesses with an ecological focus realize an expanded client base
and an invigorated creative atmosphere. Offering an ecological
approach, however, requires knowledge and skills rarely taught in
horticulture and design programs. This presentation guides
landscape architects, designers, contractors, and others through
what’s needed to establish a respected, visible presence in the fields
of ecological landscape design and management. Participants gain a
new understanding of local plant communities, learn about design
projects modeled on regional ecosystems, acquire practical design,
restoration, and management techniques, and discover new ways to
grow their skills and businesses.

Valuing and Managing Veteran Trees &
Tree Populations
Guy Meilleur, Historical Tree Care
VETree identifies strengths and weaknesses, response growth and
retrenchment, assets and liabilities. Basic concepts include:
ecological contributions of the tree and its associates; cultural
connections to regions, people, & history; compartmentalization &
response growth; making ‘defects’ stronger than ever; common
treatments in Europe and Asia, and complying with international tree
care standards. We’ll review & apply the best of VETree’s e-learning
tools, video, and graphics. The VETree approach advances tree risk
assessment, so we incorporate the TRAQ form in a sample activity.

Breaking the Rules: Ecological Landscape
Design & Traditional Landscape Methodology
Larry Weaner, Principal, Larry Weaner Associates
Using native plants requires more than simply expanding the
conventional design palette. Based on observation of how native
plants develop in nature, new design, implementation, and manage-
ment techniques emerge, many of which are diametrically opposed to
traditional horticultural practice. This presentation examines how
alternative approaches on everything from selecting, arranging, and
spacing plants to the simple act of weeding can yield more easily
maintained landscapes that express the beauty and ecological
richness of our native landscapes.

Guy Meilleur, ISA Master Arborist, Historic Tree Care
This presentation demonstrates restoration pruning of
storm-damaged and topped pecan, oak, maple, birch, and eucalyptus
trees. 14 years of data include fresh samples of branch ends that were
selectively pruned with “heading cuts” after a 2002 ice storm. These
dissections show solid regrowth and well-developed branch
protection zones. We’ll review the proper use of pole tools, and

Trading Turf for Trees
Chad Peevy, Division Superintendent of Grounds, Landscape, &
Sanitation Services, Old Dominion University
Changing environmental conditions have led urban planners,
engineers, & policy makers to consider landscape-based applications
as part of a larger strategy for addressing social needs. Plants are now
being valued for more than their aesthetics and this is placing
horticulturists in positions where our contribution to the decision-
making process is greater than ever before. The reorganization and
concentration of green space is shifting in an era where policy and the
environment are altering the North American landscape. This lecture
- Trading Turf for Trees – will examine these changes and explore the
green industry’s position to affect a positive influence.

Permitting for Living Shorelines
Karen Duhring, Coastal Management Scientist, Virginia Institute
of Marine Science
Living shorelines, riparian buffer restoration, and other native
plantings are generally considered to be beneficial. Yet these projects
might also require temporary or permanent impacts to coastal
habitats that are protected by law. This talk will provide a basic
review of Virginia policies, laws and permits related to horticulture
projects near tidal shorelines, including commonly used terms, why
different laws apply to different parts of the shoreline, permit
requirements & processes, and who to contact for regulatory advice
and assistance. How to take advantage of incentive programs will
also be covered, such as expedited living shoreline general permits.

Zen & the Art of Composting
Joe Murray, Consulting Arborist & Educator, Tree Literacy, LLC
Compost happens. Just as there is an impulse in nature to build
complex structures from simple compounds, there exists a
corresponding impulse to disassemble those complex structures back
into their original simple compounds. The art of composting works
with the latter impulse, orchestrating the interaction between
compostable materials and organisms responsible for the
disassembling. Composting connects us with the “other-half” of
nature associated with dying, death, and decay. Often, gardeners
focus solely on the germination, growth and harvest of plants and pay
scant attention to the remainder of the greater cycle at play in their
gardens. Actively becoming involved in composting provides a sense
of balance to the garden and gardener as well.

Plant Expert Can You Be Without
an Awareness of Soil Health
Joe Murray, Consulting Arborist & Educator, Tree Literacy, LLC
Plant experts are quick to point out that the majority of plant
disorders are caused by problems in the soil environment; yet upon
diagnosing disorders, these experts typically restrict their
observations to the above ground portion of plants. Such a
shortsighted approach leads to recommendations that only address
symptoms, or worse, further degrade plant & soil health. Plant
health and soil health are interdependent. Properly assessing plant
health also means assessing soil health. To truly be a plant expert,
one must also be a soil expert. Learning more about soil health
improves your diagnostic skills and enables you to offer more
comprehensive recommendations to address soil and plant
disorders.

2019 Tom Eaton Scholarship Recipient
Charlotte Higginson is a full-time graduate student finishing her final year in the
University of Virginia’s Master of Landscape Architecture program. She holds a B.S. in
Natural Resources from Cornell University with a minor in Horticulture. During her time
at Cornell she worked for the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation conducting studies
in the White Mountains, along with the University’s Horticultural Department on berry
crop research. After graduation, she spent time in China working with an outdoor
education company teaching students environmental sciences, map reading, hiking
skills, rock climbing, and surfing. Inspired by global ecologies, cultures, and art,
Charlotte started pursuing a Masters in Landscape Architecture at the University of
Virginia. Charlotte says, “UVA has offered me the opportunity to continue learning
around the world and bringing knowledge back to share and adapt to local challenges.
This past summer UVA sent me to France for a summer fellowship hand-drawing and
working with international architecture students. I will finish my degree this spring in
Charlottesville, continuing previous research on sea level rise in Norfolk, VA. looking at
coastal ecological shifts and innovative solutions.”
The Tom Eaton Scholarship is awarded annually to a student attending a Virginia
college and majoring in horticulture or related studies. For more details about the
scholarship, including application guidelines, please visit www.vahort.org.
