Autobiography

Hello,

My name is Dawn Turner and I am excited to be

organizing and leading this year’s Summer Junior

Camps at GreyHawk. I am a recent graduate from

Indiana State University where I was playing as a

NCAA Division I golfer.

My current role is the Assistant Golf Professional

at GreyHawk with the ambition of earning my

‘Class A’ designation with the PGA of Canada.

Growing up, I was a competitive diver for the

Nepean Ottawa Diving Club where I was ranked

top 10 in Canada on platform before retiring

summer of 2012.

I have been in the coaching field for over ten years now, switching my teaching expertise from

diving to golf in 2012. Coaching has always been a passion of mine because I get to mentor and

educate young minds and help them develop more than just the basic sport skills. My philosophy is

to teach core values that will create lasting personality traits throughout my program participant’s

lifetime. Being kind is something that will never go out of style.

Having a great mindset and developing leadership skills is what makes my job so amazing. I love to

teach with creative methods to achieve success. Golf is a sport that can be played throughout a

person’s lifetime. It is a fun way to keep healthy and develop relationships.

My goal for this year’s summer camp is to have every program participant fall in love with the sport

of golf and discover a passion they might not have known they’ve had. I didn’t start taking golf

seriously until I was 16, but it is now my favorite thing to do. It is never too late to start something

new.

I am looking forward to this year’s junior camp program; it will be jammed packed with amazing

fun activities! So I hope to see you this summer!

Best Regards,

Dawn Turner Assistant Golf Professional, GreyHawk Golf Club

Driving Range Challenges & Activities

1. Through the Gate

Location: Driving Range

respect and caring as they cheer on their teammates and show good sportsmanship.

Age Group: All participants

Group Size: 2 equal groups decided by the tradition tee throw (by program leaders)

Required Equipment

o Golf Balls

o Golf Club

o 2 Tour Sticks

o Big Smiles

Activity Description: This challenge requires the program participants to practice the golf skill

of aim by hitting a golf ball through two tour sticks located out on the range about 20 yards away

spaced around 15 yards apart. To increase the difficulty tour sticks may be placed further away

and/or closer together. The team with the most successful shots to go through the gate wins.

Participants are encouraged to cheer on their teammates as well as their competitors.

Steps for Activity: o Split participants into teams

o Explain and demonstrate tasks

o Ensure every program participant has one golf club

o Have program participants in two lines far away from the swinging area

o Start hitting golf balls through the gate

Rules: No hitting in front or behind other player on the range. Point is only rewarded if the ball

makes it through the tour sticks. Both teams have to allow every participant to have an equal

amount of shots/attempts.

2. In the Bucket Location: Driving Range

leadership and respect as they compete against themselves and group participants.

Age Group: All participants

Group Size: Individual

Required Equipment

Activity Description: This challenge gets the program participants to practice the golf skills

of aim, distance and height control as they individually compete to get as many golf balls as they

can into a range basket located about 15-20 yards away from the range hitting area before time

runs out. The participant(s) with the most golf balls to land within the basket wins.

Steps for Activity: o Set up range hitting area and basket

o Explain and demonstrate the goal of activity

o Ensure every program participant is in their own hitting space even with everyone else

o Have program participants begin to play at a controlled pace.

o Program leaders providing needed assistance

Age Group: All participants

Group Size: Individual

Required Equipment

o Water Balloons

o Golf Tees

o Golf Club

o Splashing

Activity Description: This activity is to create a fun light hearted atmosphere where program

participants hit water balloons instead of golf balls in attempts to burst the balloon on impact and

get wet. It is a fun activity to cool down program participants while doing the instructed swing

mechanics instructed by program leaders.

Steps for Activity: o Make sure all program participants are spaced out accordingly on the range

o Explain the safety rules (no running out to pick up plastic from balloons)

o Ensure every program participant is in their own hitting space and balloons

o Have program participants hit water balloons

o Once activity is complete and clubs are put away, have program participants and leaders

pick up garbage and throw it away properly.

Rules: No hitting in front or behind other players on the range. Water balloons are to be hit by

golf club, not thrown at other program participants.

12

Short Game Area Challenges & Activities

1. Tic Tac Toe

Location: Short Game Area

Targeted Short Term Outcomes: Program participants will practice the core values of honesty,

respect and caring as they cheer on their teammates and show good sportsmanship.

Age Group: split 6-8, 9-14

Group Size: 4-5 participants per group, two groups total

Required Equipment

o Chipping Net

o Yellow and White Golf Balls

o Wedges

Activity Description: This activity is a take of the traditional game of tic tac toe where program

participants in smaller groups will divide into two groups and try to chip a ball in the net that

have nine dividers to create a line of three to win tic tac toe. Both teams are given different color

golf balls to keep track of which team has made the shots. To make the game more challenging,

if both teams hit into the same square, it cancels out the block. The team to get three in a line

first wins. Can be played as many times the given time slot provides.

Steps for Activity: o Set up net in an open area and make sure there is no one set up behind it

o About 5-8 yards away, set up hitting area for groups

o Make sure participants who are not chipping are far away from the chipping area

o One person will try by chipping one golf ball and then the team rotates players

o Everyone is included and given an opportunity to chip in the net

Rules: No hitting in front or behind other player on the short game area. Once game is finished,

program participants will collect all golf balls used and return them to their correct location.

2. Best Chip of Three

Location: Short Game Area

Targeted Short Term Outcomes: Program participants will practice the art of fun hearted

competition in demonstrating the core values of sportsmanship, caring and honesty.

Age Group: split 6-8, 9-14

Group Size: Individual

Required Equipment

o Wedge or Highest Iron

o Golf Balls

o Ball Marker

Activity Description: This golf challenge is to not compete with the other program participants

but rather challenge the individual to make the corrections needed from their previous shot. Each

program participant will chip one shot and wait for everyone else to hit. They are then leaded to

13

leave their club at their chipping station and go out to the green to mark their ball with the hat

clip marker they made on day two. There will either be a specific pin or target (basket) for the

campers to chip to. After each shot they will only remark their ball if it is closer than their

previous attempt. They will be given three tries before the target changes.

Steps for Activity: o Give all program participants a well-spaced out spot on the chipping area

o Give all participants one golf ball

o Chip, wait, mark and repeat

Rules: No hitting in front or behind other player on the short game area. Honesty is the best

policy; have to be accountable for outcomes.

3. Mini Tournament

Targeted Short Term Outcomes: Program participants will practice the art of fun hearted

competition in demonstrating the core values of sportsmanship and the encouragement of others.

Age Group: All participants

Group Size: Individual

Required Equipment

o Wedge or Highest Iron

o Golf Balls

o Target

Activity Description: This quick challenge will have program participants chip against one

another by taking the best one of two chips. The winner will remain and another opponent will

step forward. Once the winner of a round is knocked out or all other players have competed

against the winner that is when the challenge ends. It could be one participant staying in the

winner circle the entire game, or it always changes. It is a fun way to put a little competition

pressure on the program participants because there are high pressure moments within the game

of golf. This activity acts as a good mental training activity.

Steps for Activity: o Set up two chipping areas

o Have one participant go then the other until they have both chipped two shots

o Winner of round stay and another player competes

o Goes until time given is up

Rules: No hitting in front or behind other player on the short game area. Need to be respectful of

outcome and encouraging while watching.

4. Balloon Golf

Location: Banquet Hall/Club House

participate in another way to play golf while remaining respectful and encouraging to other

program participants.

14

Age Group: All participants

Group Size: Everyone

Required Equipment

o Pool Noodle

o Balloon

o Large Basket

o Empty Golf Ball Boxes

Activity Description: Program leaders will set up an indoor golf challenge within the banquet

hall where program participants have to swing inside with a pool noodle and hit balloons with

the objective to hit the least amounts of shots to get the balloon into the basket. There will be

different distances and ‘pars’ to mimic outdoor golf. One stroke penalty if the balloon pops.

Steps for Activity: o Set up indoor golf holes using golf ball boxes as tee markers

o Give program participants a pool noodle and a balloon

alignment and speed skill while putting. After a win or lose, players rotate and compete against

another program participant.

Steps for Activity: o Set up tic tac toe ribbons and putting start line

have them paired by closest to farthest from the hole.

o Play

Rules: No swinging putter around if player is not putting, their club is held in the safety position.

4. Putting Croquet

practice their putting skills. The objective is to have the fewest amounts of putts for the course

(program leaders will give a par to each course).

Steps for Activity: o Program leaders will use pipe cleaners and golf tees to set up the four courses

o Program participants will split up and try each course

o Make sure players are spaced out and are respectful not to putt if there is a player still in

the way.
