FSU VS. FLORIDA ATLANTICFriday’s match marks the 10th time that FSU and Florida Atlantic will meet, but it will be first time since 2008. The Seminoles have won each of the nine previous matches, and all have come in straight sets.

FSU VS. COLORADO STATEFlorida State is seeking its first victory against Colorado State, as the Rams have won all three of the previous meetings. It is the third year in a row that FSU and CSU will play each other, with Colorado State earning a 3-0 win in 2017, and outlasting the Noles in 2018 with a five-set victory.

FSU VS. TCUThe Seminoles are playing TCU for the fourth time overall, and for the third season in a row, as FSU has won each of the previous three meetings. Sunday’s match will be the first road game for the Noles against the Horned Frogs, as FSU earned a pair of 3-1 victories at home in 2007 and 2017, and defeated TCU in straight sets in Tallahassee in 2018.

STRAIGHT-SET STUNNER!The Seminoles made history on August 31 with their straight-set victory over No. 3 Minnesota (25-17, 26-24, 25-21). The win was the highest-ranked victory in program history and the first-ever win over a Top-5 opponent. The last time Florida State defeated a Top-10 team was on August 29, 2014 with a 3-1 win on the road at No. 7 Nebraska.

Junior Jasmyn Martin, who transferred from Minnesota during the offseason, carried the Seminoles offensively with 16 kills and just two errors for a .500 hitting percentage on the afternoon. Senior Payton Caffrey recorded a double-double on 10 kills and 15 digs with two service aces, while redshirt freshman Morgan Chacon came up a kill short of a double-double on nine kills and 11 digs. Freshman Emma Clothier hit at a .556 pace with six kills in the match, while redshirt freshman Lily Tessier recorded 21 assists.

TOPPING RANKED TEAMSOne of the standards of the Florida State Volleyball program under head coach Chris Poole is that the Seminoles will play a difficult schedule and seek to play as many ranked teams as possible.

The Noles have been very successful in that regard, posting 28 wins over ranked opponents since Poole took the helm in 2008, including seven wins over Top 10 teams.

The 2019 Seminoles have already faced two teams and will play five others that are currently ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Poll - No. 3 Minnesota (W, 3-0), No. 5 Wisconsin (L, 0-3), No. 7 Florida, No. 10 Pitt (twice), No. 24 Louisville, with Colorado State and TCU receiving votes.

DECADE OF CONSISTENCYFSU is one of only 11 programs in the country to make the last 10 NCAA Tournaments (along with Colorado State, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Nebraska*, Penn State*, Stanford*, Texas*, USC* and Washington*). Eight of the 11 schools - Hawaii, Nebraska, Penn State, Stanford, Texas, USC and Washington - have previously won NCAA National Championships, and combine to hold 29 of the 38 titles in the history of NCAA Volleyball.

BLOCK PARTYThe Seminoles are anchored in the middle by junior Taryn Knuth, who led the ACC and finished third in the NCAA in 2018 with 188 blocks, including 30 solo blocks. Knuth held a 26-block advantage over the next highest player in the conference - Amber Witherspoon, Syracuse (162).

Through the first two matches of the season, Knuth leads the team with 12 blocks, including seven on August 31 in a straight-set victory against No. 3 Minnesota.

In just her third season in the Garnet and Gold, Knuth is climbing up the all-time block record book and already has tallied 362 total blocks, which ranks 15th all-time in FSU history. Gabrielle Reece holds the program record of 747 blocks, set from 1987-90.

Her 308 assisted blocks are 12th-most in school history, while her current rate of 1.62 blocks per set is third-highest all-time.

ACE IN THE HOLE! Redshirt freshman Morgan Chacon has shown a knack for challenging serves so far this season, as she leads the team with four service aces, including three against No. 5 Wisconsin on August 30.

Overall, the Seminoles have recorded 10 aces through the first two matches of the season among four different players - Chacon (4), Payton Caffrey (2), Adrian Ell (2), Madison Sullivan (2).

FRESH FACESThere are a lot of newcomers on the 2019 Florida State Volleyball roster. Overall, only six of the 17 Seminoles traveled with the team during 2018.

The Noles welcome five true freshmen: Jessica Nunge (Newburgh, Ind.), Loren Scott (Tallahassee, Fla.), Haley Frank (Oviedo, Fla.), Emma Clothier (Carrollton, Texas) and Lauryn Burrows (Marietta, Ga.).

There are also three transfers that are joining FSU for the first time: junior Jasmyn Martin (Minnesota), redshirt junior Caleigh Morrison (West Florida) and sophomore Marissa Stockman (Illinois State).

Along with those, there are three players that redshirted their freshman season in 2018: Alyssa Collins (Fort Myers, Fla.), Morgan Chacon (Crown Point, Ind.) and Lily Tessier (Fort Myers, Fla.)

PRESEASON ALL-ACCA pair of returning players that earned AVCA All-American Honorable Mention honors in 2018 were recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference heading into the 2019 season as senior Payton Caffrey and junior Taryn Knuth were named to the 18-member Preseason All-ACC Team. It is the second year in a row that Caffrey and Knuth have received preseason accolades from the conference.

STRONGER AS THE MATCH GOES ONThe Seminoles continued to grow and make adjustments defensively throughout each of their two matches on opening weekend, as their opponents’ hitting percentage continually decreased from the first to the third set.

No. 5 Wisconsin took the first set (25-15) after hitting at a .308 pace, but narrowly took sets two and three (25-22, and 25--23) as FSU limited the Badgers to a .242 and .196 hitting percentage, respectively.

Against No. 3 Minnesota, the Gophers struggled at the net in the opening set as they posted a .206 mark, which only fell to .178 and .167 in sets two and three, as the Seminoles earned the straight-set victory over Minnesota (25-17, 26-24, 25-21).
