119 YEARS OF QUALITY SEEDSHonorable George Washington Swink, founder of Rocky Ford, CO, held the rst Watermelon Day in 1878. “It was just two years aer the admission of Colorado as astate that G.W. Swink, a pioneer of the Arkansas Valley, had such a good crop of melons on his ranch that he thought it wouldn't be a bad thing to give his lessfortunate neighbors a taste of them. So he hauled a couple of dozen melons to the nearest rendezvous, the railway station, and he cut them up for his waiting guests

GENEROUS SEED PACKETSWe recently had a phone call inquiring if wewere the company with twice as much seed inour packets. In most cases, we are. Ourscoop sizes catered to large farming families 119years ago and contain the same amount today.majority of our corn, bean and pea packets contain1/4 cup or 1/3 cup of seeds!

140 YEARS OF WATERMELON DAY

DV & Maude Burrell with son James “Harold” Burrellat the Aermath of 1903 Watermelon Day

upon the dismantled door of an old freight car.”1 About 25 people were present. e number of excursion trains and the size of the crowds steadily increased up to 1892 when the Arkansas ValleyFair was started. e Fair and Watermelon Day has several years been honored with the presenceof the Governor and other distinguished citizens.

By 1891, with 8,000 visitors and 10,000 melons, the feast had reached such proportions that it tookplace in a large cottonwnod grove on the edge of town. “...in 1895 the grounds for the melon pile had to be enlarged - some forty wagon teams hauled 20,000 melons and 60,000 cantaloupes to feedthe multitudes, who came by prairieschooners, bicycles and in seventy-ve coaches on the Santa Fe Railroad.”1

GW Swink exclaimed, “Eat the heartout and we’ll save the seeds!” Here youcan see the Aermath and men withbuckets to “Save the Seeds”.

is year’s 141st Watermelon Daywill be held Saturday, August 17th.More info at www.arkvalleyfair.com.1Colorado Magazine, 1953

ONIONS

Most people think growing onions from sets is the way to go, but the opposite is preferable. When starting with sets, more green than bulb is produced. Onion seedsperform better, especially if you choose the right variety for your area. ere arethree types of bulb onions: short day, intermediate day and long day. isrefers to the length of daylight in your latitude. Northern areas are long day, southern areas like Texas are short day and Colorado would be intermediate.

Short day onions require a long growing season. We grow nice short day onionsFord, Colorado because of the warm climate and extended growing

Onion seeds can be direct seeded in warm climates or started indoors in cool climates. Start onion seedlings inside 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting outside in cool climates (Zones 6 or lower). Sow seeds in pre-moistened potting soil 1/8” deep. Press down lightly and keep evenly moist. Onion seeds take a while, so be patient. Trim seedlings to 3” as they grow to keep them from getting top heavy and strengthen stems. Transplant 3 to 4 weeks before your last spring frost date. Space 3” to

to 4” apart when small. Green onion seeds should be planted or thinned to 1” apart.
