Weekend Runs at Conservation Park We are getting a great turn out at Conservation Park on our early morning Saturday runs. Rain or shine, runners have shown up. We have various distances, paces and levels of runners. For the most part, we stay together in groups. No one is left out on the roads by themselves.

Profiles in time… Meet your fellow members

Betsy Moore

What was your childhood ambition? I always wanted to be a nurse! What is your current occupation? Retired! If money was no object, what profession would you choose? Not sure! Today, there are so many opportunities for females, like being a professional football referee, etc. Almost too many to choose from. Favorite running memory: Crossing the finish line on my first ½ marathon even though I had a stress fracture but didn’t know that I did. It was on the bottom of my foot! Indulgences? Ice Cream!! Non-running hobbies? Reading, cooking, being with my family. How and when did you get interested in running? I have run off and on in my younger years but got serious after I turned 55! Best place to run near Panama City? I haven’t ventured to far out of my neighborhood so I really haven’t found one yet. What is your perfect day? Low humidity! What is your biggest challenge? Getting my pace down without being or getting injured. What is it about you that no one would or could guess? I ws born and raised in SE Asia and Middle East!

Panhandle Runners Club Meeting Minutes

July 18, 2019

Present: Joe Edgecombe, Angela Klopf, Gumby Weckherlin, Andrea Weckherlin, Denise Martin, Alejandra “Ally” Alvarado and Joe Grammer Absent: Marty Kirkland May Minutes: These minutes were reviewed. Joe Grammer made the motion to approve them as presented. Andy Weckherlin seconded the motion. All were in favor and none opposed. Treasurer’s report: Marty Kirkland was absent. Joe Edgecombe shared the May financials and stated the only change has been the $981.45 was received from Race Judicata. Old Business: Couch to 5K: Some people getting back into running have been joining our runs and successfully progressing. In the fall (Sept.-Oct.) we would still like to possibly off a Couch to 5K for those that have never ran before and want to start. Profiles in time: Joe sent the newsletter out in a different format this time. Everyone agreed it was easier to read. He continues to collect peoples profiles and share other information. Club shirts: Joe has reached out to Victor that does our T-shirts about help with a new logo to get tank tops and t-shirts done up. While we have discussed including “still running #850 Strong” we all agreed that our logo and getting the Panhandle Runners Club needs to be the bigger part of the t-shirt. We want to promote the club wearing them in the community. Everyone again expressed the need for a softer cotton material versus the stiffer material. Also, that we didn’t want a big, heavy plastic looking logo. Joe will keep moving forward with this project. Stickers: Joe priced getting some peel and stick type stickers we could put on vehicles and other things to promote the running club. He said he could get 100 of the 3”x 3” for $228.80 These can be ordered as soon as we get our new logo. New Business: Trash Pick up Day: There was discussion on doing a trash pickup day each month. A suggestion was made to instead do that one time a year, so more time and people could turn out. It also gives more time to promote. Then we can take on another project to mix things up. That way we have two bigger events we do each year versus the same thing each month. This could help with people’s enthusiasm and create a bigger turn out fo reach. We agreed to brainstorm an idea for another project. Tricker Trek 5K/10K: The date of this event will be October 26th. Other runs in October will be the Pirate run. October 12th. Socials: Angela suggested that we do an event that is also informative. Maybe a Physical Therapist talking about the importance of stretching and proper stretching techniques. That could be followed up by a short yoga class. Angela will look into putting this together in August or early September. Another activity suggested was an Ice-cream run. Ally will look into some routes and connect with Angela to put this together in August. A future kayak and paddleboard activity was also suggested. We can talk about a bigger social event with Joe and Marty are back from their August trips. Angela suggested we invite the other activity groups (Hammer Down Multi-sport and RWB) to join us for our bigger community picnic type event.

Scout, Our adopted PR&T Trail Dog, just had very critical emergency surgery. It was touch and go for a bit but she is one tough trail dog. She is doing much better. She will be back with us again soon. She has kept Jeff and Rene’ crazy busy with her medical care. Wishing her a Speedy recovery!

What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger, so the saying goes! We keep telling ourselves that. We have doing some Sunday morning hill climbs by Sparkleberry Hill on N. Blue Springs Rd. Normally (if one can use that term with us) we park at Sparkleberry Campground gate and do about a ½ mile warm up. We then turn around and charge the hill! So to speak! We run up the hill, catch our breath and then run down the hill. Our fluids are left by the cars so we drink and then run down the hill. We repeat this a few times. That varies by individuals. Some do a couple and some do up to 6 repeats. Anyone interested in building strength can join us. After we get done running the hills, we go to Williford Springs and get a cool refreshing treat.

Wishing a speedy recovery Hill Climbs Anyone?

Conservation Group Running

Fund Raising/Race Organizing

The Panhandle Runners & Triathletes Club will lease race equipment, coolers, tables, finish line clock and timers to individuals wishing put on a fund raiser/run/walk. The equipment rents for $150 with a refundable $200 security deposit. There is a lease agreement that can be downloaded off the club’s website: www.panhandlerunners.com . The lease will itemize what equipment is needed, date of pick up and the date of return. The person leasing the equipment will need to get with Andy Weckherlin, Equipment Manager, 2 weeks prior to the event date to determine when pick up will happen and delivery is expected. The equipment fee does not include people to help put on the event. Club members in good standing (members for 6 months) or that have assisted with races will be able to lease the equipment for $75 with the same $200 refundable security deposit.

If there are any questions concerning the equipment or putting on an event, you may contact one of the officers for additional information. __________________________________________________________________

Request to Local Race Directors: We are starting to have many races in the area. I have a personal request…Please check the race schedule and see if any races are scheduled for Panama City or Panama City Beach. 2-3 races in a small town on the same day gives runners options but do nothing to help you reach your fund raising goals. It actually hurts some of the races. These things still will happen but please just check and if possible, find a date that will help optimize your fundraising goals! When renting the equipment, you must contact the equipment manager to arrange the pickup and delivery 2 weeks prior to your date. It is imperative that those renting the equipment must have a vehicle with a 2” ball, lights and insurance! Thanks!
