All Volunteer, All the Time

FFW is fortunate to have dedicated volunteer committees working hand-in-hand with the Board to fulfill our mission. These committees work tirelessly to safeguard and grow the Fund’s finances, run our grant application and disbursement process, manage our events and more.

Dear Friends,

As we emerge from these uncertain times, it is now, more than ever, our community needs organizations like the Fund for Women. Through our Empower grant we have awarded $50,000 for concerns such as transportation, housing and education. By partnering with Arbor Development, our funds are being used to fix cars so women can get to school and work; provide a security deposit to insure safe housing and escape from a domestic violence situation, and pay for educational classes to assist women in achieving economic self-sufficiency.

For our tenth year, we continue our annual grant cycle, awarding funds to both non-profits and individuals who share our mission of helping girls and women realize their life goals. With the assistance of Mary Alice Bosseler’s family, our wig fund continues to grow and allows us to provide women in need the

The Fund for Women began its journey in 2009, with twenty women sitting around the kitchen table of one of our founders, Rachel Wood. They saw barriers to girls and women in our community, keeping them from growing, achieving and excelling - and knew they could help. That inspiration led to the formation of the Fund for Women of the Southern Tier, Inc., an all-volunteer non-profit organization, and the only dedicated funding source for girls and women living in Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties in New York State.

Fueled by its supporters, FFW channels the power of community philanthropy to break down the barriers that persistently hold women back. Our hope is that every grant has the power to help transform a life by giving every girl and woman the confidence of knowing that other women believe in them and are here to help.

confidence and strength to fight cancer with a stylish and comfortable wig.

Thanks to the generosity of the Komen Foundation our Barriers to Care program is thriving, and we continue to provide women battling breast cancer with funds to aid in transportation, childcare and other basic needs.

As our society navigates these troubling times, we appreciate our donors and volunteers whose generosity allows us to persist in our mission. It is with your continued assistance that we will remain a source of support and encouragement for girls and women in our community.

Best,

Our Grants - Annual Grants CycleFFW manages an annual grants cycle that opens for applications January 1 each year, and closes for applications March 1. This grant cycle awards educational grants to individuals and program support for nonprofits that serve our four-county area. An all-volunteer grants panel reviews and considers the merits of each application and makes recommendations to the Board for how best to distribute the available funds. The FFW Board votes on the grant recommendations, and disburses grant awards each June.

2019 Individual Awards for Education

FFW sponsors two different individual awards for education as part of our Annual Grants Cycle. We award up to ten $500 grants for those who need a little extra support in their educational pursuits. We also award up to four Achieve Grants which are $2,500 awards for women who have faced significant challenges in meeting the added expenses associated with continuing education. We give preference in this category to women who are first in their family to attend college, are nontraditional adult learners, are looking for advancement in high demand fields, and/or have overcome significant obstacles to their educational advancement.

FFW Individual Educational Grants 2019In 2019, FFW granted nine $500 awards to deserving women in our community. These funds were used to cover expenses including the costs of books, tuition, and living expenses. We awarded individuals from Chemung (five), Steuben (three), and Yates (one).

Grant Distribution

FFW Achieve Grants 20192019 marked the first year FFW awarded $2,500 to individual women pursuing educational opportunities. We were overwelmed and humbled by the stories of the women applying for these grants. With special thanks to our generous donors who were moved to fund these Achieve Grants beyond the initial four awards designated, we were able to select eight deserving women to receive these grants. We awarded five individuals from Chemung and three individuals from Steuben. Featured below are snapshots of four of their stories. We withheld names to protect the privacy of our grantees, but understanding their compelling stories remind us all of the the impact we can have on the lives of individual girls and women in our community.

Our first grant recipient story is from a part-time nursing student at Elmira College. She was able to continue her education and journey towards her bachelor’s degree because of the Achieve Grant. As a single mom raising two beautiful daughters, she sets her goals high to make her daughters proud and demonstrate just what women are capable of. She is in her fifth year with plans to graduate in May of 2020. She will be the first college graduate in her family. After receiving her degree, this recipient would like to work for a local hospital in the breast center.

Another grant recipient returned to the area after a difficult divorce and escaping a cult. After leaving almost all of her belongings behind, she began to rebuild her life. As a single mother of a young son, making the decision to return to school was not an easy one. This decision resulted in financial stresses but also helped her find her true purpose. With this new sense of purpose, she hopes to one day own a wellness center. She credits the Achieve Grant with helping her to better her life.

We awarded a grant to another individual who has dreamed of working in the medical field since she was a little girl. After years of living a life of solitude, she decided to pursue her dream by attending Corning Community College for nursing. In order to achieve her lifelong dream, she bikes several miles each day to take the bus to and from CCC to attend classes. She also bikes to and from work each night. She hopes to graduate from CCC with a GPA over 3.5 and go on to earn her CRNA. The Achieve Grant will help her to accomplish her goals as well as keep her motivated for her next goal.

Our final story is from a woman who recently returned to college at CCC to become a Chemical Dependency Counselor. After struggling through years of an abusive marriage and mounting financial difficulties, she found herself behind bars at a state prison. She was given the rare opportunity to attend an alternative correctional facility; a military-like boot camp. It was during this program that she turned her life around and discovered her passion for helping individuals with addictions. The Achieve Grant will help her to achieve her educational goal, but will ultimately help the underserved population suffering with addiction.

Child Care Aware® of Steuben and Schuyler Child Care Aware® of Steuben and Schuyler is excited about the progress being made with the Child Care Development Pipeline Project, an initiative to develop more child care programs in Steuben and Schuyler Counties. They are very appreciative of the funding from the Fund For Women that has been earmarked for potential child care providers to take state mandated pre-service training.

A newly registered child care provider, Julie Larsen stated, “Without the funding for the Health and Safety Training, I would not have had the money necessary to become a registered provider.” Additional funding from the Kay Hodge Memorial Fund for Health and Safety helped Julie with necessary supplies and home repairs that allowed Julie to become registered. Her next step is taking a Business Essentials class also funded by Fund For Women, to learn sound business practices, which will contribute to her creating a successful child care business. Registered on August 21, 2019, Julie Larsen already has an enrollment of 2 children: one under two years-old and one toddler along with her own children. Julie is pleased about becoming a registered provider because she is now able to stay home with her daughter and watch her grow and develop, while earning an income at the same time. In total, The Fund For Women provided the resources for four individuals to take the required pre-service training, creating 24 child care seats in Steuben County.

2019 Achieve Grants - Impact Spotlight

Life: Powered By You!Life: Powered by You! is an exciting day of educational and empowering workshops for young women in 8th grade from twenty different regional schools and presented by professional women. It is a dedicated experience built specifically for middle school age girls focused on gaining practical life strategies, growing confidence, building soft skills, and helping young women realize their power and potential to reach goals, and to lead happy, healthy, successful lives. Girls are chosen to participate based on a strong belief by their school counselors of their untapped potential to grow stronger in wise decision-making, communication, self-advocacy, healthy life choices, and becoming future leaders. This event was inspired by and is made possible in part through the grant from Fund for Women.

The Fund for Women grant allows Career Development Council to provide Life: Powered by You!, engaging students in intentional learning on issues of life importance for young women whether growing up in rural areas or inner city. It brings positive role models who engage students in critical conversations on financial literacy, how current actions impact future opportunities, and developing the highly sought soft skills by business and industry. Over the last 10 years, we have continuously provided a program to encourage self-empowerment and self-advocacy reaching over 1000 young women.

A focused collaboration on the future success of our young people, Life: Powered by You!, reinforces the bridge between our local education and business worlds to strengthen our community as a whole. This program also offers an opportunity to increase community awareness of the collaboration between education, the business sector, nonprofits and community foundations to prepare students for future workplace success.

Our Grants - Ongoing GrantsBarriers to Care Grant

Each year, FFW applies for a $15,000 grant from Komen Twin Tiers to fund our Barriers to Care Grant Program. Barriers to Care Grants are designed to support women who are faced with financial obstacles as they seek treatment for breast cancer. This program is administred by Fund for Women and provides up to $500 per woman to address expenses that may otherwise keep them from receving treatment. Funds are used to cover costs for child care, transportation, utilities, and more. FFW is grateful for the continued partnership with Komen and thrilled we can support women at this critical time in their treatment and recovery journey. As of 2019, we have partnered with Komen to grant $95,109 to more than 200 girls and women in our community.

More than keeping up appearances, it is about providing strength and confidence for the journey.

The effects of cancer treatment can be profound in unexpected ways. The financial and emotional burdens are real and challenging. And sometimes things that may seem small, can have tremendous impact.

This Fund is dedicated to women who are struggling financially and cannot afford a quality wig to address the hair loss that often accompanies cancer treatment. The stress, anxiety and vulnerability that comes with a woman’s changing appearance is compounded when she does not have the means to address those changes in a way that makes her feel comfortable or secure. The intent of this Fund is to give women with financial need a path forward if they feel a well-made wig would improve their outlook, safeguard their privacy, increase their self-confidence and provide them strength as they continue their recovery.

2019 marked our Eighth Annual Fundraising Dinner. This special event allows the women of our community to gather, network, and share experiences while supporting and growing our endowment. Meg Lowman, nationally renown environmentalist, conservationist and tree canopy expert provided our keynote address. She shared with us her inspiring message of empowerment and the impact of being aware and getting involved. Meg brought home the

need for all of us to recognize how the health of our planet and all of its inhabitants truly effects the quality of life for each and every one of us. Those in attendance were truly moved by the work she has done and some were even inspired to join in her mission and further their own conservation work through her organization. An amazing evening, indeed!
